@happymochi S did a Skype interview for one of his schools. Aside from making sure the dining room didn’t look like a cyclone had just hit (that’s where the computer with Skype lives, and judging by Skyping with relatives, you can definitely tell and it’s distracting) and making sure other distractions (like the sister, the TV, and the meowing cat) were neutralized for the allotted time, it was pretty much like any other interview except I could eavesdrop from the next room.
Note: don’t eavesdrop. I found myself starting to second-guess everything either party said.
@eh1234 It sounds like you may not need to do the FAFSA. We didn’t for my S14 for two years; his merit scholarships didn’t require it. Some schools apparently do for merit, so be sure to check. However, with both S14 and S16 in school at the same time we may have some need.
I heard a few of you saying that you were missing schools on IDOC. Reed does not seem to be listed even though we sent them a profile. I sent an email to the school and they said they should be listed. Any ideas what is going on with IDOC missing schools. I know there was a lot of talk before, but I might have missed info since I just looked at the website recently.
@happymochi, thank you so much for the info about paying the taxes before we could use the IRT. I was just going to wait until April to pay. The bad thing is we had to take the money from S college fund to pay taxes. Gotta love being middle class.
@mommdc I should probably split the difference and have a little more withheld, but I wouldn’t feel secure if we had it all withheld (payments for elder care, therapy bills not covered by insurance and other fun stuff like that!) Most of the money in the 529 account came from a grandparent otherwise we would be looking at 2 years in CC and 2 years in-state tuition so D is very fortunate!
@LKnomad I got the IDOC request last week, and Reed was on it as wanting everything. My D applied to 7 schools that require the CSS, and only two (Reed and Macalester) were listed on the IDOC request. One other school (Whitman) contacted us directly and asked for copies of our tax return, W-2s, and 1099s. I just assumed the other schools – all LACs – didn’t need extra information. She got an acceptance from one already (Willamette), and they didn’t ask for any additional info.
Did anyone else’s kid get a phone call from UCLA regarding the alumni scholarship? My S phone dropped the call right in the middle of it and they never called back. What did the caller say? I remember reading a post on it but I don’t remember what they sId and I can’t find it now.
Well you know how some of y’all with older kids have said that your kiddo completely did a 180 on the schools that top their list between September and May 1? D16 just did a 180 on me today. Her final decision came in the mail today an acceptance for Marquette’s direct entry BS/DPT program. (Ok well technically there is still one EA deferral outstanding to Ithaca’s BS/DPT, but they had completely fallen off the list prior to the deferral) Marquette had been in the bottom 1/4 of her choices back in September has suddenly shot to #1. In fact I distinctly remember her telling me when she submitted the application that she didn’t want to go to school in Wisconsin. We have not visited this school, so suddenly a trip to Milwaukee has become a priority. WEIRD!
At any rate, I think all of her options are ready to be reviewed and a decision made in the next 6 weeks!
@petrichor11 I’m in the same boat with my twins. My son got into his first choice ED and has known since December. His sister got her first acceptance today, but is probably going to have to wait until the end of March to hear from her top two choices. She’s really tired of being asked about it!
I was reminded today that sarcasm can be easily misconstrued. D occasionally models. It’s great, but infrequent money, and I ask that at least half be put in her college savings. At any rate, she had a beach bridal shoot. I posted a few pictures she texted me to my Facebook with the joke, “D has decided to forgo college, her dream of being an engineer, and get her MRS degree instead.” Holy moly! People believed me! I think I need to recalibrate my sense of humor . . .
D16 has now sent her regrets to 12 schools and accepted her admissions offer and full-tuition grant to attend her #1 dream school as a residential student. She’s enrolling in the Honors program and plans to finish at this local school with an MSW after five years. Also, DH just started a new, permanent professional staff job (no longer a contractor or temp gig) at a decent (and higher) salary – so, R&B are not going to be such painful expenses.
I’m amazed. And, I deeply appreciate all I’ve learned from the folks of College Confidential.
@dyiu13 I am so happy that things have worked out for your family!!!
@labegg we visited Marquette last summer. PM me if you have specific questions. I think it is a great place. DS has other offers that he finds more attractive however. :-(.
So happy for you and your family, @dyiu13 . To be all wrapped up in early February with so many schools in play, and a new job, too. Winners all around!
