Agreed@ @DAPIStained - that’s such wonderful news. Does she like UMich as much as they like her?
@mysonsdad: Yes, we got that message as well. I confess to deciding to wait a day or two to see if it went away, and haven’t looked yet. All his schools seem happy with what they have.
@Ballerina016 Thanks for the virtual invitation! And @EastGrad, Valentine crepes sound wonderful. I
'm guessing strawberry? Chocolate?
@DAPIStained awesome news! And @CAMidwestMom glad to hear everything is working out well for him!
Congrats @DAPIStained !
I was disappointed that her summer camp was not sufficient for SCEA and this scholarship validates it.
With this post, I am half way to “Senior,”
You may note a change in demeanor:
With almost two kids in college
It’s increased my knowledge,
And my comments will sound much extremer.
Happy Valentine’s Day, '16 Parents! :x
@Mysonsdad @petrichor11 I spoke to IDOC about that message, and they said it is a glitch for many students that should disappear soon.
@EastGrad ;))
@happymochi, thank you
Thanks, @happymochi!
Some 86 new posts? Whoa.
Congrats on Stamps for UMich @DAPIStained ! That is an offer that should be considered very seriously.
Glad your visit was great and your DS is happy @CAMidwestMom!
Our visit was good but not quite what we expected. I think it will take us both a few days to absorb it all.
@fretfulmother UMich was not listed high in her school list because it would cost more than all the other schools in her list. So she was not as excited as we were when she first heard acceptance. She said she would go Bing rather than UMich. Now her attitude toward UMich changed a lot. We still wait many results and wish to have more options.
@texaspg Deferral from Yale was a disappointment but we were also expected. It is such a hard school to get in. So we don’t have any complain or frustration. Our frustration and worries came from rejection from U of Virginia. No one in her stat at her school got rejected from U of Virginia last 4-5 years. We worried a lot whether a recommendation letter or common app essay has a big problem. Now, we feel more confident that app is OK. It’s more about luck and fit, we guess.
I did not know the scholarship until she got a letter. So we were not sure what it was and we are more excited now.
There sure is a high degree of randomness in this process!
@DAPIStained - For your DD to get Stamps at UMich and to get deferred from Yale and rejected from UVA is kind of crazy! Meanwhile, my DS did better with the Ivies but did not get the invitation to apply for the full ride at Pitt, nor an invitation for the top merit aid at UMD, nor any offer of merit at UMich (so far?).
FAFSA Question - We’re updating FAFSA with final tax information and using DRT. The FAFSA was originally submitted on 1/1/16 with bank account and investment balances as of 1/1/16. Do we need to update those balances as of today? The balances have changes slightly. Specifically the two questions below:
-On the day you submitted your FAFSA, what was your mother’s total current balance of cash, savings, and checking accounts?
-On the day you submitted your FAFSA, what was the net worth of your mother’s investments, including real estate (not your mother’s home)?
Also, does anyone know if “assets” in this question below includes money in a 529 plan?
On the day you submitted your FAFSA, did the total amount of your mother’s current assets exceed $9,200.00?
Thanks!
@mom2one98 I changed mine. What can it hurt? I don’t have a 529, so I can’t answer.
Just got an email that the 1099 I have been waiting for is ready. So that means taxes and Idoc tomorrow…not much fun but at least I will get to check something off the to do list
@mom2one98 I included our 529 balance as a parental asset on FAFSA.
Just back from a 3 day college trip with S. The last 3 schools he needed to visit. We saw them a few years ago when looking for D but S needed his own trip. Well, we froze walking around these schools in 20 degree weather. At the visits on Sat. and Sun. there were very few kids out an about - the schools seemed so different then when we visited with D! But S had a great visit at UMD where he has been admitted and we know two students. Now we are on to. . . more waiting. We did manage to continue our “tradition” of sampling ice cream at the schools with dairies and chocolate and/or cupcakes at local stores in the towns where we visited schools. Yes, my H and S have no issues with eating ice cream after freezing college tours. This was not the first time. H and I told S today that he could write a blog about the chocolate approach to visiting colleges. Right up his alley. Except for the writing part! LOL
I tried to catch up with this thread but it is pretty near impossible after 3 days so I’ll say a general Congratulations to everyone with good news. And hot chocolate and cupcakes for those with not good news. And an extra cupcake for those waiting on news. Just two weeks until we turn the corner into March. Then I bet we’ll need to check this thread by the hour. Hoping good news is on the horizon for all of our kids.
I was checking out photos of dorm rooms on Pinterest and such to get an idea of what kinds of storage units might fit under dorm beds. I’ll tell you, some of those rooms were decorated to within an inch of their teeth (::cough:: Ol’ Miss). I had no idea custom headboards, big monogram medalion wall-hangings, gobs of color-coordinated accent pillows, draperies, long tailored bedskirts to camoflage the under-bed storage, and upolstered furniture were du jour. Maybe it’s regional/cultural. (Not quite sure where the text books are stowed…in the laptops, I guess.)
Looks like a 4-drawer plastic tower fits well under a raised (not lofted) bed. Now to source them.
I am not encouraging anyone to be lackadaisical…but our personal experience with older kids (and that FA offices verified) was that if financial forms, etc. were sent “around” the due date…a few days later sometimes…it did not make a difference and the colleges were okay with that since they get inundated with everything at once and it takes them awhile to sort through all of the new financial information anyway. Do it as soon as possible…but don’t sweat the exact deadlines…
I found this old thread here on CC about updating savings and investments after original FAFSA submission.
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/1296450-correcting-fafsa-do-you-change-savings-investment-blances.html
According to this thread and a few random sites I found when googling the subject unless there is a typo in the numbers do not update savings and investments when going back to use DRT or adding/deleting schools. Probably not a big deal if balances were updated so longer as changes were not material.
