Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

@mommdc, it depends on a lot of factors. For DC, certainly, dispensing with the Breadth courses and clearing the runway for “real” courses had great value. Also, those credits are not counted against the credit ceiling, giving more room for advanced courses. In any case, it opens up the schedule.

But, it means declining UC admission and trying to get in as a transfer. There are transfer Regents as well, but it may be hard with only one year (since they like to see Honor Society membership, is it phi theta kappa?, and leadership at the CC that is hard to do so quickly).

It is certainly not for everybody. However, I would wager that few really consider it as a serious option. I am just trying to raise awareness. It works for some, and especially well for some high-achieving students who would never ever think to consider it.

@LKnomad, I am just saying it is pretty byzantine and merits further investigation. I do not think you can get credit for IGETC as a DE student. I think it is more to graduate in one year instead of 2. And it is very good for those students who are more single-minded in their pursuits and loath to repeat gen ed classes which they perceive as having limited value (or interest). It keeps the gen ed Breadth classes as 30-40 student engaging classes, instead of a pile-on of students taking the “required courses”.

It is a piece of the puzzle to investigate further.

DE is very big here, as it’s free to HS students. You’re considered a student at your HS so the classes count as HS classes AND can be used for credit in the WA State public colleges. Yet, you apply as a freshman and that makes you eligible for freshman merit money, or so I understand it. Many kids at D’s school do it, as do kids from some of the Seattle schools. There are a half-dozen CC’s within a 30 mile radius. D’s school has no AP or IB. All kids in all grades take the same honors-level courses that are roughly taught a grade level ahead. But some kids want another path, so go with DE. The CC’s here are well-respected.

@drmom123 they are called “Promposals”. At some schools they are hugely elaborate, at D’s they are much less so. D asked a classmate last year with cookies that I made and decorated to spell out “Prom?”. He said yes. Some shy kids ask less shy friends to help them set things up. I don’t think they’re a MUST though.

@drmom123 We have the same tradition a our HS, for all the dances. Guys asking girls (Homecoming and prom), or girls asking guys (Sadies and Sweethearts dances). They usually make a sign or decorate some type of food (pizza, cookies, cupcakes, etc.) or maybe write it on a piece of sports equipment that relates to the ask-ee’s activities. They also try to come up with something funny or a kind of pun, in their question/invite. It is also the tradition that if you are asked by someone, you say “yes,” unless you have a good reason not to. But most kids go as friends and organize in large groups, so it is mostly meant to be a fun night and a reason to get dressed up. I get the impression that the kids scope out the situation before asking to make sure they do the deed! Lastly, a lot of the kids have a friend take a photo and they Tweet or Instagram it. My son is in the same boat. Very shy, and has never asked a girl to a dance or anything. He’s been the ask-ee but never the ask-er! He’ll probably enlist his buddies to find a girl who is a friend of one of their dates. I told him I heard that prom (seniors and their dates only) is different than other dances and he needs to ask more than a month in advance. So he better start figuring out who to ask. At least he wants to go, which is great!

Re: All the Cal Poly SLO acceptances - Congratuations! As a CA native/Midwest transplant, I agree with @CAMidwestMom, that it is my fav Cal State campus. SLO and the Central Coast are beautiful! Wish OOS tuition wasn’t so high. :frowning:

@ItsJustSchool Wont work for my S16 because he is not really interested in the UCs - they are more a safety. But S20 is heading down that road and I am looking at the possibility of a CC transfer, so that could be huge depending on how homeschooling goes and if he does AP classes. Thanks for the info.

I wonder if UC campuses coordinate acceptances somehow. It seems that UCI posted acceptances to honor program today on portal. We don’t have much luck with mid-tier UCs so far.

Unexpected news for tonight: S just found out that he’s been accepted to UCI with Regents, and with CHP (Campuswide Honors Program)! <:-P

Just got some good news for a change UCI Regents!!! YES!

Congratulations @LKnomad and @happymochi

I have to convince D to check her portals for Cal Poly SLO and UCI. I don’t have access to her login information and she’s satisfied waiting until she gets emails. I think she’s trying not to get stressed out checking the portals all the time, but it’s driving me bananas!

@Ballerina016 that seems so weird about the UCs coordinating with each other. I wonder if that’s changed since S12 applied. Four years ago, he got into UCB, UCSB, UCI and UCSC, which were all of the ones he applied to.

@Mom2jl this is just a theory. Each campus is looking for specific type students, but they all using the same data, so I would think someone who got into UCB, should be in the rest of them, except UCLA, because they are unpredictable.

@happymochi @LKnomad
Was thrilled to hear about the UCI acceptances. Congrats!!!

I would also guess that they may also take more of the local students. We are quite close to UCI and they take a lot of students from my son’s school. Not sure how many get Regents, however. It is not a district with a lot of high achievement.

Congrats on the UCI acceptances with Regents @LKnomad and @happymochi!

Congrats @happymochi and @LKnomad !

Had a nice evening here-older D had an unexpected night off and came over, then Sseakid passed her written driver’s exam on the last day of driver’s ed. We’re done! All we need to do is have her drive with us for 50 hours, though I think we’re about 5 hours in so far. We get 3 evenings a week back, and tomorrow D doesn’t even have her internship so I can cook a real sit-down meal for once!

@sseamom my son has been working on those 50 hours of driving for a year and a half…sigh.

@LKnomad and @happymochi Congratulations for UCI Regents.

I am thrilled for everyone’s good news today, but @LKnomad I am especially cheering for your boy! SO HAPPY about this!!

Thanks @GoodGrief16. I think the fact that we now have a UC acceptance means that the verification nightmare is over.

Yes! Let’s hope common sense finally prevailed!
