I often thought about making a Tshirt quilt out of robotics t-shirts. The only problem is she may never stop wearing her shirts. I’ve seen ones made out of shirts from lots of teams. They get auctioned off for charity and bring in big money. I’ll have to put some more thought into that.
D had a great experience recently at a scholarship day (you needed to go and ‘try out’ if you wanted to be considered for the scholarship). The only issue is that she said that she was the most out going kid she met. She is pretty shy. That made her a little worried about the population at the school. We’ll have to see how this plays out (and if she gets the scholarship). I know some of your students have experienced these programs. They bring in their top candidates to apply for these scholarships. Are they mostly shy quiet studious kids? My D was hoping to meet more kids like her – a little goofy.
D16 does not want a memory foam topper or an eggcrate mattress pad. However, she loves the Laura Ashley featherbed topper, so once we know what size the mattress is (XL twin?), I’ll use a BB&B coupon for that. She’ll leave the feather bed topper she already has on her bed at home. (She doesn’t want much, so I try to pay attention when she does express an interest.)
@MuggleMom Give me several weeks
and I’ll be able to give you more input into scholarship interviews. DS16 will be participating in a competitive interview on Monday for a substantial scholarship. He is somewhat shy, but a little quirky.
Those tshirt quilt links have been very helpful. I have determined D16 would be best off with one that did not place fused backing on the t shirt and does do overall quilting on the entire piece. That Campus Quilt uses a machine quilter for that overall stitching.
Also, I’m favoring a crazy-quilt of variously sized patches rather than uniform block squares. Her t-shirts graphics are so varied in size, I’d want to piece them together like a mosaic. My good buddy has a tshirt throw like that, so I’ll ask her. I’m unsure if it was all-over quilted, too. But, if I recall correctly, it might have landed in the $200 range. A local quilter constructed it. Maybe this could be DD’s 18th birthday gift.
I would never have a t-shirt quilt because I really don’t have many t-shirts or any I would surrender for such a thing. I do keep a bunch of old ones in a memory box under my bed along with other memorabilia. But I don’t like the idea of wrecking them. So if you want to do this for your D or S I would definitely gauge their interest ahead of time. Just my 2 cents
So, D and I spent some time looking at “comforters,” and it turns out she doesn’t like quilts…no quilts, not handquilted by mom, not t-shirt squares by campusquilts.com, not machine pieced and stitched, nothing. Her college room will be a quilt-free zone. She likes duvets. Lofted duvets with geometric covers. Fluffy duvets without covers. Comfy duvets with a flannel cover like the one currently on her bed. I guess I’m glad I figured this out before I spent a couple hundred hours making her a quilt. A stitch in time saves nine, I guess.
Figured this out in just a few minutes, actually, and went to the mall to do coat shopping instead. Can’t decide whether I’m sad or relieved…
D keeps her old tees to sleep in. She doesn’t have too many from when she was younger. The super special ones are boxed up with things that she saves. The others she has donated. But for kids with large collections and IF they’d be ok with it, a quilt made of them sounds wonderful.
My DD has asked for a t shirt quilt, although I really don’t like them. I don’t see how they really fit in decor. But, this whole college search journey has taught me that my kid is her own person and many times our values, needs, and tastes are verrrrry different – which has been fun, if sometimes shocking, to discover.
OMG if I ever touched my sons t-shirt collection to make a quilt he would have my head. His are all Game of Thrones, Doctor Who, Colleges he toured, and memes. Each has a special place.
For those who know GoT - he has a t-shirt for each house.
My D is completely uninterested in dorm room decoration, and I lack a shopping gene, so we are definitely procrastinating on stocking up.
D had a fairly high stakes scholarship interview via an online service today. She made us all leave the house, but in the end she did not feel like she performed well. Guess we will see.
Kind of a neat thing: the other admit from our state to her EA Ivy was skiing at the same race this weekend and sought out my daughter (after seeing her profile on the accepted students page). The girls are going to the same accepted students weekend, so maybe this could turn into a friendship!
I don’t know GoT, but my son is a huge fan. I bet he’d like those shirts. He’s plenty old enough to buy his own, but maybe as a gift. D has some shirts from our southern vacation/college tour that she actually wears out in public and not only to sleep in. THOSE are super special, like the Feb 1 shirt from the Greensboro Sit-in memorial/museum.
@MuggleMom Were those group interviews? How did your D know she was the most outgoing?
S16 is interviewing tomorrow at a college for a scholarship, and again this coming Thursday in a different state…but at both locations it is an individual interview, so I don’t believe my S will know the personalities of other candidates.
I am currently chaperoning a student organization conference standing in a hallway making sure all the kids are quiet. Glad to hear about kids narrowing their decisions. I don’t recall relieving BB&B coupons so I guess I need to start looking out for them.
As for DRT, I filed on the 6th and owed about a couple grand, I paid it by the 13th but still can’t use the tool. It’s getting to crunch time.
