@MidwestMomTo2 you said it perfectly… there’s a difference between ‘what’s required’ ‘what’s ethical’ and ‘what’s just bad behavior’
We deposited at her likely (big state flagship)- but kept the others open as there were still some big scholarships that could have potentially (unlikely) changed the field.
We have put down a room deposit, but not an enrollment deposit, at the state flagship. We did that only because past experience has taught us that Flagship U tends to run out of dorm space, and I really don’t want that to be a problem for S. The room deposit is refundable (less $50) if your child doesn’t end up attending, so I’m guessing Flagship U is okay with the whole scenario.
Our flagship also offers a fully refundable deposit and a partially refundable housing deposit. When we made the deposit, he withdrew everything but two schools. This was such a drastic change for him that I asked him to keep those two options open. One school in particular said he had until 5/1 but asked if he did decide earlier to let them know and we wanted to honor that request. I do not feel bad about leaving those two options open. Given my S’s dramatic change of heart, it would be reckless, imho, to shut out all other options.
You would have to know my daughter to understand how crazy this is, but she just called me crying so hard I could hardly understand her. She got accepted to Northeastern after an EA deferral with a financial aid package that makes it affordable.
