Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

Congratulations @AnxietyAttack77 on Rensselaer!

@Ballerina016 Thanks! It was her first acceptance on a day when she was waitlisted at Georgia Tech so it’s a big relief.

@AnxietyAttack77 Thanks for the suggestion. Does the aid offered to your daughter match the RPI Net Price Calculation? My son also got into Northeastern, the aid he got is actually higher than NU estimated Grants/Scholarship by NPC. That’s why I’m asking.

We did not do the net price calculator because we don’t qualify for need based aid. She is a Rensselaer Medalist though so she got the minimum (and very generous) $25,000.

@AnxietyAttack77 I see. My son got waitlisted at both Georgia Tech and Case earlier Saturday then admitted at RPI. Same feeling.

@Sean67208 Welcome and congrats on the RPI acceptance and scholarship. It could be that the merit award is only part of the total package? Was that the FA package or just the scholarship awarded with acceptance? I think that holds the key to whether more may be forthcoming.

@palm715 I feel so bad for your D. I saw some people on that thread mentioning a total over four years. Did she misread that and think it was per year? S got into NUin, but even for spring semester at NU, they only offered a student loan. Paying for NUin, plus the spring semester would be way over our FAFSA EFC, which as most of us agree, is a ridiculous amount anyway. We could stretch to the max to do that, but would only do it if we all really thought it was worth it and we haven’t seen anything that made us feel that way yet. He had thought that program seemed really cool at first, but now he immediately wanted to move on and decline the admission. I hope she will be not be too sad for too long. I was proud of my S for even getting into NUin. It was insane competition this year from what I could see. She should be super proud too!

@Undercovermom1 I believe the calculator result did include need based aid. We saw FA letter online and we think it includes both merit based and need based aid because it offers additional $8500 loans but no grants.

GT was a tough cut this year. Definitely no shame in getting WL at a world-class institution like GT. Just too many bright kids wanting to go there with not enough seats at GT.

HUGE congrats though on your kids getting into RPI, NEU, etc

I know getting acceptances after soon after a rejection/WL is a huge confidence booster for the kids.

Right there with you. Probably holding down the ship’s bar, at this rate, surrounded by empty gin bottles

Thank you! @CAMidwestMom @ChicagoSportsFn

@Ballerina016 Do you mind if I ask which ones she decided against?

@livinginLA she said she will always has a place in her heart for SCU, the first school that accepted her EA when two other deferred her. She gave up her spot now since they are releasing decisions for RD. She also tried to decline CSULB, CPSLO and CSUN, but was not able to do so. Also all UCs, but top 3 (UCLA releasing on Friday).

@Ballerina016 I myself will always have a place in my heart for SCU. I really wish S would go there to be honest, but alas it is not my choice.

@Sean67208 Have you filed the FA paperwork? Does your letter say anything at the end asking you to file it if FA is needed?

I think lot of schools are making judgements about a kid based on a lot of things including - FA, merit, interest shown, school (have they admitted people in the past, do they like someone better from that school or have they taken more than normal from the school), major requested, yield protection, and then fit.

So one might get into single digit admit rate school and not get into one admitting at 20% or more. It is just the way things work these days.

@mrsquietstorm9, this

“I’m more of a stalker on her school’s website than she is.”

sounds exactly like me at times during this process (for my S).

We do qualify for FA-barely-at some of D’s schools. We found the NPC to be virtually useless. At one school where the NPC said we’d qualify for nothing in FA, D got a scholarship that would have covered half of her total expenses, including room, board and tuition. At another where the NPC indicated we’d get about the cost of maybe a semester’s worth of dorming, we got a scholarship for twice that, but nothing but loans in “FA”. At D’s school of choice, we are still waiting on the final package, but got a scholarship for about 1/2 what the NPC indicated. So it’s a complete mystery why and how these NPC’s work, because none of them seem to be very helpful.

We went in knowing that we could pay X, and that scholarships/grants would determine which of the list would be affordable above that X. Anything beyond even that would require D to take the Stafford loans, but she has the bonus of adding a TEACH Grant, which does not have to be repaid. That gives her options she wouldn’t have had with another major. We pretty much ignored the NPC. Stories on CC convinced us that they are not reliable, and we found that to be the case.

We have filed both CSS and FAFSA. Just hope more aid is coming but not sure since FA letter we got online did offer some loans. Thanks @texaspg for the explanation on how schools select students.

@Sean67208 the scholarship would replace some of the need based grants, thus reducing any FA you may have been anticipating.

Thank you all for the info about FA!
