@EastGrad Thank you!
Congrats to @delurk1 and everyone else with good news today.
@allboyz ā It still MIGHT be worthwhile for your son to attend the Admitted Students Day to connect with some of the other incoming freshmen. It might depend on how his school does the freshman roommate bit, i.e., if they allow kids to choose their roommate. My S14, who actually tends to struggle a bit in some social situations, buddied up with a group of guys (none of whom knew each other before) during the Admitted Students Day at the school that he attends. They stayed in touch through Facebook for a while afterwards. He ended up rooming his freshman year with another guy that he met in the freshman Facebook group, but heās still hangs with a couple of those guys.
The topic of finding a freshman roommate will no doubt occupy a lot of pages of this thread at some point during the summer, and some will argue that itās best do let the school do the match. But I thought that Iād at least bring this up as a consideration.
This isnāt news about me, but my friend was very pleasantly surprised to discover that he received a full-tuition scholarship from UMiami today! Was really happy for him, especially after a string of rough rejections and waitlists.
The USS Indecision cruise has been simplified by one. An outright - we are not interested in you - denial on Friday. S really liked all the schools that he applied to, but this one was an outlier as the only LAC. Since his other offers are higher on his list, the decision rattled him in terms of thinking of the remaining decisions, and potentially receiving the same reply from everyone! DS is holding his cards close to his chest, and I have little idea which, if any, outstanding schools are preferred.
DS does have some college Tshirts collected as gifts from family, friends, camps etc, but he only has one from a school on his list ā and this was also a gift. He was never interested in the bookstore shopping except for buying books. Kids at his school wear college Tshirts very indiscriminately. Even if he was to wear his final choice, I am not sure anyone would really notice.
Congrats to all the good news, especially those with final decisions. <:-P =D>
Thank you @AsleepAtTheWheel . I will mention it to my son again to see if he is interested. He already has a roommate. He has two friends that will play with him. One starting out with him (roommate) and another that is currently a freshman. Then he has several other kids from his high school that will be attending the same college. Thankful for that because he is rather quiet/shy when he meets new people. Once he knows them then he tends to warm up. Thanks again for your advice.
@WhereTwo Sorry for the bad news on Friday. Hope he will get good news from the remaining schools.
Iām already going overboard with spirit items. lol I purchased three shirts for my son,a hat,two window stickers, the thing that borders the automobile plate and a key ring. To top that off I already put the window cling on my van. LOL My S16ās is on the left and my other son S12 on the right. Next thing I want to purchase are the little stadium seats for the games.
@allboyz Iāve got one stadium seat! D has enough shirts to make it through a week (she got 2 free at the school); DH has the ball cap; shoot-- weāve even got a flag flying out front (we āneededā it for when they played our in-state flagship school in the fall; and since it looks like they may do ok in Marchmadness-its flying now!)
@oneundecided Glad Iām not the only one that has started purchasing (and displaying) the spirit items. My husband had to pull me out of the store. lol
I admit being out of control on the spirit items. S got t-shirts at a lot of the schools he visited and and he wears all of them. Now that heās leaning towards one, Iāve gotten several more shirts, my favorite being a St Patrickās day themed shirt.
The school my D will be going to the fall sent us a couple car stickers. I didnāt want to ājinxā D so I havenāt put them on yet (not easy to peels those off). As soon as we drop her off in late Aug, the stickers are going on!
She was so happy to get accepted that she got school hats and t-shirts to give to her GC and two teachers who wrote excellent LORs for her. She was grateful for their efforts.
Iāve gotten a couple shirts already including one of those that says āxxxx University DADā. Can you tell Iām proud of my baby girl???
We would get flags to fly at the house but the school isnāt big into sports.
Thereās no turning back at this point because of her ED admission, we couldnāt/wouldnāt decline the schoolās offer of admission.
D has some spirit wear for her college. She also has sweatshirts and tshirts for her sisterās school, a friendās school and dadās alma mater. Whenever she wears any of them to school, she gets asked āare you going there?ā She is now only wearing her choice!
My S bought a few t-shirts when we visited schools. He wears them without really thinking about it. Iāll have to try and notice if he still wears the one he was rejected from - I think he will, but I could be wrong.
We also noticed a lot of kids wearing t-shirts from different schools on tours and none of them seemed out of place or disrespectful. For many of the boys, a t-shirt is just a t-shirt.
DS returned last night from his NEU Scholar event. He loved the school and the program ā especially the kids in the program. NEU has his highest respect and will recommend anyone to look into it. As a memento, he got a little husky stuffed animal, very cute. He hopes to stay in touch with the kids he met, soon-to-be students and current students.
On the apparel front, he really went shopping at the MIT store! He got DD a hoodie and a Tim stuffed animal. He got me a Tim mug, Tim stuffed animal, and a MIT MOM decal, which I canāt wait to display on my car He got his hoodie and a cap.
Iām crossing my fingers that this means what I think it means
As we were going through heaps of pictures this weekend, we find a pic of D at around five wearing a t-shirt with a college seal that says, āCheerleader U ā Weāre Just Here to Cheer!ā and lots of glitter. D is disgusted I let her wear something with such a sentiment. I actually canāt imagine buying it so it must have been a hand-me-down, but Iām sorry my dear feminist daughter, the all-pink, all-glitter, all the time phase was real.
@palm715 My daughter also use to be into pink and it lasted a long time - maybe until about 5th grade. Now the predominant color in her wardrobe is black. Not in a goth type of way, but more in an urban chic style. She is also a cheerleader who loves the cheer competitions but wishes they didnāt have to bother with football and basketball games. It really bothers her when people assume that cheerleading is mostly about cheering on the boys.
@kittymom1102 it sounds like your son had a wonderful visit and how awesome to be able to display your MIT MOM on your car! Congratulations again, enjoy these moments! <:-P
In terms of spirit wear, I think my D has only 2 tshirts from different schools she has visited and she doesnāt even wear them. Iām thinking she doesnāt want to wear it because she doesnāt want anyone to assume that she is picking a school yet.
lol @palm715 , thatās so funny!
Well, Iāve been away from this board for a few days and am now 50 pages behind! I doubt Iāll be able to catch up!
Congrats to all who were accepted, got scholarships, got money, chose their schoolsā¦
My D has decided to attend Ball State, after doing an informal visit there all day yesterday and Sunday afternoon/evening. Bought the sweatshirt, even. Says she is cancelling her other apps and signing up for housing asap.
Whew.
I personally thought she should see her second choice again, but she was pretty firm and resolute about it.
Ball State, it is.
She is going back for Admitted Students Day next month for a more formal visit.
