J.D. stands for doctor of jurisprudence which logically represents a doctorate but practically speaking I don’t know any lawyers being addressed as doctors.
I was an intern doing a family medicine rotation and this healthcare provider was wearing a short lab coat (that’s what I’ll call it because we never had a white coat ceremony where I went to school). In the hospital, the doctors wore the long lab/white coats and medical students, PAs, and NPs wore short lab/white coats. I had a question about something and addressed the provider as “Ms”. That’s how I was taught to address a female PA or NP. She said that I have to address her “Dr” which is fine with me because some people want to be called by their appropriate professional title. Later in the day, I asked a resident why that healthcare provider wears a short lab coat if she’s a physician (my assumption since she told me to address her as Dr). The resident told me that the PA has a PhD in Music.
I’m just an intern trying to “do no harm” so I just go with the flow.
@ChicagoSportsFn I also wore a short white lab jacket as an Occupational Therapist mainly to have pockets for some of my equipment . I was working with a geriatric resident one day, and noticed that she kept calling me Dr. No matter how many times I told her that I was not a Dr, but her occupational therapist , she could not remember . I didn’t think much of it until I walked into her room one morning to begin her Activities of Daily Living treatment for the day involving bathing, dressing, grooming and toileting. She turned to her daughter and said " I have the best Dr in the world . Every morning she comes and puts me in the toilet and even wipes my butt when I can’t reach." I stopped wearing my lab coat after that .
S is in at the Elliot School at GWU. He has three more schools to go-- one possibly tomorrow, two on Friday. Of all his acceptances thus far, I can really “see” him at GWU.
Congrats @petrichor11 . Is this one of his favorites?
Looking forward to hearing more good news for your S the next few days!
Congrats @petrichor11 wonderful news! I’m so happy for your S!
D was also accepted to GWU today, but even with the substantial merit award it’s far too costly for us. It’s all good, though. Now that the dust has settled (all applied colleges have been accounted for) D is researching all aspects of the two colleges we’ll be visiting in just less than two weeks.
@readingclaygirl thank you!
@labegg maybe she can call him counselor. Isn’t that a term for lawyer!
My lab coat was less than glamorous, more a necessity to keep chemicals off my clothes, lol.
It had quite a few holes from when I got acid on it. We used it to break down the protein in cheese so you could determine fat content.
congrats @petrichor11 - maybe your ‘vision’ will come true!
Nothing wrong with wanting to use your professional title. I keep telling my D16 she is not ever going to win an argument with him.1. He is her teacher 2. His is older than her 3. He is an attorney…he is never going to admit he is wrong and she ALWAYS has to have the last word. It’s a bad combination, just hoping the school year ends before she crashes and burns.
@labegg Maybe if you put it to her this way. “Don’t let him have so much control over your goals that he prevents you from ever being called Dr and when you return for a reunion after you graduate you can make him call you Dr.”
@Undercovermom1 S isn’t home so I don’t know what his financial aid package is yet. We’ll see how it turns out. The scholarship is a big help, but we still need pretty substantial need-based aid. Still, most of the kids’ schools have been within a range (Brandeis has been the highest thus far). As long as it’s no more expensive than Brandeis (and hopefully less), we’ll keep it on the table.
Congrats @petrichor11 @Undercovermom1
Congrats @petrichor11 @Undercovermom1! Good luck with the decisions!
This doctor discussion brings to mind the TV show “The Pretender”. In the opening credits, Jarod is in a white lab coat and is talking to an older woman in the hospital. She peers at him suspiciously and says, “Are you a doctor?” and he says, “I am today.” Great show, btw. Should have had a longer run.
@labegg D is SO ready for the year to be over-at least next week is spring break because I think ALL the kids AND the teachers need it, if the stories I’m hearing about folks snapping at each other mean anything. I keep reminding her that she has a lot to finish up before she can say she is done and to just get it done and to stop complaining. The teachers are all stressed out because the school will be moving to a new building and will be run rather differently, in the fall of 2017, so everyone is on edge.
My D got into UC Santa Barbara, I realize decisions came out last Tuesday, but she did not check until today.
She has already decided she’s going to UC riverside, and didn’t check until she received an email about checking out her financial aid package to help in her decision-making to attend UCSB
Not going to lie, did not expect this, it was definitely icing on the cake, and a nice little ego boost to my daughter, He struggled her sophomore year, and killed herself her junior year in order to even be in the running for any school, I’m just a proud mom!
Congrats again to all who have got fabulous news, and good luck on all decision making. I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed for those of you still waiting.
Congrats @TwoBoyzOneG1rl
We had only one person in our high school with a doctorate who was addressed as Dr. and it was the head of the music department.
“… so you could determine fat content.”
I just use a mirror.
