Parents of the HS Class of 2017 - 3.0 to 3.4 GPA

Don’t think that this procrastination stops after college application. My daughter is going for a semester abroad next spring, and was running around campus today getting forms turned in. Tomorrow is her last final and she wants to leave by 1 pm, so of course there was plenty of time to get everything done today.

How much do you want to bet that she’ll have ‘just one more form’ to turn in tomorrow before she leaves?

@curiositycat333 - hope your head is feeling better today after last night’s head banging (and hopefully today’s successful turning-in of said form to GC. Maybe one of your three descriptors could have been “eternal optomist” or “endlessly flexible”, or my personal favorite: “has an elastic sense of time” :> Then again, all of my suggestions are longer than one word.

Coyote-son got two essays done last weekend (Dec 4th!), and he nailed one of them, but the other is just weak - and rather than brainstorm with me, he was supposed to get help from his English teacher/homeroom advisor. Despite near daily reminders, he may get to it tomorrow. Ugh, but thanks for the tip @twoinanddone that the procrastination continues in college.

Well, big disappointment last week–still processing it. Actually S17 may be taking it better than I am. His 2nd choice school turned him down, and this was after his college counselor (who is actually reported to be very good) had told him “you’ll definitely get in there, so why do you even have more than 2 schools on your list?” Ugh! Well, good thing there are more than 2 schools on his list! S17 said he’ll keep moving forward, but will probably add a few more safety schools to his (already very long) list, and just brace himself for lots of rejections. Ouch, but okay. Keep reminding myself this isn’t a linear process, and engineering is so competitive.

Good news is that the next day he got an admit from another lower ranked safety.

@Hankster1361 Sorry to hear about his 2nd choice school turning him down. YEAH for a safety though. Boo for the counselor who should know better.

@Hankster1361 sorry for the disappointing news (and congrats on the safety and your son’s good attitude). I think many of us will be bracing ourselves as more responses roll in. I know it’s true at our house. Hoping for great news but trying to be ready for whatever might happen.

Weird about the counselor’s advice being so off the mark. That’s annoying!

@Hankster1361 sorry about the muss on the #2 school, and shame on that GC–I suppose it’s not fair to expect them to get it right every time, but given how competitive engineering is, one would think a counselor would know how to set/temper expectations. Sounds like your S has a great attitude and will have good options come decision time!

Opened my portal today and saw I got into Hofstra University, a day before they’re releasing decisions! Not my top choice but feels good to know I’m going to college

@rolani88, congrats! Love those early surprises, and getting that first acceptance definitely helps take the edge off! Here’s to many more!

S is blissfully oblivious, but I’m feeling impatient and really want to know acceptance/aid to Albany! I think I’m stressing mainly to see how hard S needs to push for more local scholarships if he wants MSU, or if Albany will just generally make more sense for him. Plus, at Albany, he’d apply for a 3+3 Law program, and it would be easier to do that application over break…Albany doesn’t have a portal, and the admissions website says EA decisions will start to come out after Jan. 1, but on CC, I’ve seen a few with acceptances already (and not super-stats kids either). I guess I just keep checking the mailbox every evening…

@rolani88 congratulations, you’re going to college…now it’s just a question of where!

@rolani88 Congratulations. That first acceptance is always nice.

Over the past few days I’ve chatted with various of other parents I know with senior kids. Either friends of mine, or parents of my son. We are all in the same boat. One of them was playing the lottery game & hoping to hear EA from a top school shortly. Another was applying to many of the same schools as S17 but a bit more reachy (top UC’s for example) although mom knew he was probably over reaching. Both of these student’s were in classes with my S in elementary school & I would say on par with him academically. But both didn’t go to S’s H.S. and instead attended a magnet H.S. Seems they must have gotten better grades than DS. It’s always been known that S17’s H.S. has grade deflation compared to other H.S and this makes it much more obvious. Same type of kids, with same educational background through 7th grade who went to a different H.S.

Then last night I chatted with the mom of one of S17’s better friends. (Goes to H.S. with him.) It was eery how similar his college list was… And they want to study very similar things in college. The only difference was this kid was applying to Arizona and mine to Oregon schools. Explains a bit why S was happy to add Boulder but I can’t get him to look at Fort Collins. It did make me feel better after talking to the this particular parent to realize that my son’s friends (rather than some of his classmates) are applying to similar schools.

I know my kid still isn’t checking portals. Theoretically UofO decision should be out tomorrow (if they count his app still as EA). I’m not going to bug him to check his portal till school that day. Gives the mail a chance to arrive and maybe an email.

Funny that you should mention the Hofstra portal - a friend of our said on FB last night her daughter saw the decision on the portal, and we checked today - looks like my son got in as well. Then he checked Salisbury and it has an option to accept or decline admission, which was not there before. So i am assuming that means its a yes LOL. My S had heard from Temple that they wanted mid term grades, but he emailed them and said he was not interested in pursuing Temple, so w ould not be sending more info. He is waiting on 3 more, and deciding if he wants to send Pitt his mid terms grades as they requested. But he still seems set on St. John’s right now. I told him to just wait until all information is in.

@curiositycat333 Just FYI, my D still never got an email from Oregon about admittance! And her envelope with admission info just came a day or two ago and when did she find out about acceptance via portal? I can’t recall now but it was at least a week earlier. So I’d have him check the portal if you can!

@CAtransplant I will but since he hasn’t checked it since last Friday, I’ll ask him to check it tomorrow. Officially decisions for EA are supposed to be made by tomorrow. I’m not pushing on these things too often.

I’m glad to hear you got the envelope. Was it a letter? Or a big pack of stuff?

Interesting development. I got an email from Augustana College suggesting that I give D a tuition deposit as a Christmas present. Puzzling as I wasn’t aware she was admitted. So I checked the portal and she was admitted last week. No admissions email or paper mail so far. Augustana was very good at sending parent emails re application received and application complete.

A shout-out to all my UVM peeps who are awaiting EA news today! Good luck! :x

@brindlegreyhound, you’d think they would make it a little more apparent if they’re going to send an email suggesting a tuition deposit, lol. Congrats on the acceptance!

My son got accepted to the University of Denver this week. The only notification was on the portal. If not for CC, I never would have known to tell him to check!

@klinska thanks! Counting down the hours!

@curiositycat333 it was a big envelope they call a Welcome Packet with a bunch of info and a car window decal for Oregon class of 2021. Also mentioned if the student is being awarded a Summit or Apex Scholarship based on GPA and test scores, they will be notified by mail within two weeks of the admission offer. And that if they are not initially eligible for one of those awards but an update in GPA or test scores later qualifies the student, they can provide the updated info by Feb. 15. Changes after that date will not result in an award.
