Parents of the HS Class of 2017 - 3.0 to 3.4 GPA

Regarding portal versus snail mail versus email…

S17 told me last night that he wishes they wouldn’t send an email!!! He’d rather wait a week or whatever and have the surprise mail packet arrive. Although “all” that was in his packet last night was

What is wrong with my child (in this era of instant gratification?)???

@CoyoteMom yeah, with no email I wouldn’t go there at all! This one did invite contact, I may mention it this weekend. My H had a lot of “will he get a job” angst with the oldest (music technology/business) and that has worked out ok. I wasn’t worried about that one as he has an amazing work ethic and is motivated/hungry as is S17. They may just not make as much money. Ok, they definitely won’t lol. But they will survive and do ok. I worry more about the other two in terms of their ability to find jobs and network/work the system, regardless of degree. S17, if he ends up at a LAC, will be the first to do so…it will be a whole new world.

@Hankster1361 I am so sorry about the #2 school result. GC’s really should hedge any bets when speaking to kids I think. Very glad your son has such a great attitude about it!

@rolani88 YAY! Congrats, that is wonderful news

@iamgriffinsmom Congratulations!!! Wonderful school

@brindlegreyhound that’s pretty funny but congrats, does your student know yet or just the parent needing to make a deposit? LOL

@MSU88CHEng I hear you on oblivious…we shall see if S remembers a decision should be out shortly. I feel your pain though, I we have a school has some decisions out but no news here either. Had a bit of a tease yesterday when a professor “added” S to a peer group that’s on their portal (intra portal social network) but it looks like that is applicants as well as admitted students. Which then makes it a question…does he respond? Looking at the chatter though, my S is definitely not alone in terms of not having heard yet and the notify “by” date isn’t until 2/1!

@eandesmom you said “Although “all” that was in his packet last night was …” but then the sentence ended. Don’t leave us in suspense - what was in the packet?

Congrats on all the acceptances! :D/ Sorry to hear about the denial! :frowning:
S17 received his 1st EA deferral to RD … he was told by his counselor that this U was a reach for him, so I guess it’s better than a rejection.
ED notification 12/15 … I’m so anxious … I’m afraid to go near the mailbox. [-O<
S17 has no desire to check portals; is also happy with USPS. I have access to his portals & University-only e-mail account ;))

And he’s in at UVM!

I am NOT going to say anything after his comment the other night. We will see if he checks the portal. He’s at school now, we will see if they send an email. He works tonight and I know he knows today is decision day as he’s asked more than once so…LOL! I’d expect the packet to be a few days given the distance lol.

Now we wait for money. UVM is high on his list and outstanding in his program area.

@klinska lol! It was the Ursinus packet. It had a letter and a mini pennant. Or at least that’s what he’s told me came in it. I haven’t seen it yet (though have seen a picture of the folder and pennant on twitter).

@MomStudent2017 I would definitely think that a deferral to RD for a reach is better than rejection. It does potentially spread out the wait but I’ll keep my fingers crossed for ED!

Yay, @eandesmom! Awesome! We’re eagerly awaiting merit information, too. Should be any day now.

D17 is in at UVM also! Woot! No clue on when we hear about merit/FA, but happy for the good news anyway.

Oh, and @klinska , not sure if you will find out the same time as us since your D was in much earlier, but the accepted students website says that you find out about scholarships in “late December”. And regular FA in March, I believe.

@kt1969 there is an accepted students website? Someone on the UVM thread said 12/20 for merit.

It is funny though and maybe not related but I got an email last week saying that they had downloaded our FAFSA which I found interesting as I know they don’t do FA till March (or maybe Feb). We wanted it in there for loan options if needed. It makes me wonder if their merit is need aware…

Oh congrats on UVM!!! that’s awesome

@kt1969, yay! Congrats! The letter we got with the acceptance package said mid-December for scholarship information, but maybe that’s been pushed back. Where is the accepted students website? I’ve just been checking the portal for updates to information, but there’s no place to even look for scholarship info, just FA info, which they say will be available late March. We’re not getting any of that, so that’s not terribly helpful.

@klinska and @eandesmom If you log on to the portal, on that first page under the info that has been there for ages are those buttons with different things, and one says “what does my decision mean?”. If you click that, the page it takes you to has the links for the accepted students website, checklist, FA stuff, etc. On the accepted students site it also shows you the accepted students days at school and you can sign up for those, etc.

I’m interested to see if we get any merit at UVM. Son’s ACT score and GPA should qualify him for some. But UNH did not offer us any as of yet. His scores and GPA and EC’s are certainly high enough for merit there, but his school is super competitive and he did not fall in the top 10% of his school ( which they take under consideration at UNH). I’ve read that UNH sends out some merit awards later too, but I know Klinska and few others got merit $$ stated in their acceptance. Son17 did not get any merit mentioned in UNH acceptance letter. UNH is fairly low on his list, and without any merit I’d say firmly at bottom. He’s met with multiple admission officers at other schools and they’ve told him he should qualify for some decent merit $$ with his stats/EC’s. No Fafsa filed.

UMass starts releasing EA decisions on Friday. Son17’s portal has not channged, still under review. Applied 10/1

@kt1969–wow, thanks! I must have clicked on it at some point because the link was purple, but I totally forgot how to get there! Hey, maybe we can meet up at the reception for Greater Boston in January!

@RightCoaster, I’m sort of wishing D had applied EA to UMass–I feel like it should be a stronger contender for her than it is, and the fact that we probably won’t know anything until April makes it that much harder to sell it to my D. Sorry about UNH’s stinginess–my D ended up just barely scraping into the top 10% of her class (at least at the time the application was sent in–I believe she’s slipped a little since–maybe they’ll take her $$ away). It’s not high on her list, either–but we really aren’t taking anything off the table until we have all our decisions in hand.

I’ve got some serious cognitive dissonance going on right now–making contingency plans should the ED decision (or $$) go south. Was hoping to hear from ED school at the end of the week, but the chatter is indicating that it will be midweek next week sometime. Ugh.

Congratulations on all acceptances thus far. I’m especially happy to hear about those from UVM; my nephew is a sophomore there and very happy with the school.

@klinska I’d submit the UMass app, it’s a common app, no extra essay, should take 10-15 minutes max. It can’t hurt. Maybe wait until your ED comes in and consider it plan B if needed. Hope she gets a favorable ED acceptance!
Busy few days of acceptances for us coming up, might have a better understanding of what to do this weekend. We’ll see.

Congratulations UVM people – fabulous!

I got a little behind! Congrats on all the acceptances and sorry on the deferral.

D is also into UVM! There are sure a lot of us – like the barbarians at the gate.

D received an email indicating a congratulations on her scholarship to Kent State University… She received 6,500 total in merit scholarships , which is great as it’s a state school and tuition is just shy of 10K. Now to come up with the room & board part!! SO PROUD OF HER! She’s worked so hard to get her grades up and score well on the ACT. She’s still not sure where she wants to attend… Hopefully she’ll make her mind up soon! I personally like Kent quite a bit- big school with a small school feel and the atmosphere seems to be quite nurturing… Bonus, it’s only & hour & 20 min drive from home.

@MSU88CHEng- Encourage the hard science as an undergrad if he truly wants to pursue law… My husband is a patent attorney & unlike many of his law school colleagues, he has tremedous job prospects and is happily employed at a mid-sized firm. Patent law is a bit different than traditional law paths and requires the ability to sit for and successfully pass the patent bar (in order to prosecute patent matters). This requires either a degree in the hard sciences or enough university/college credit hours in the hard sciences to be eligible. My husband thanks his lucky stars for his Astrophysics degree- it’s what allowed him to pursue this path. Besides, how cool is it to work on the latest solar technology or next big technological breakthrough?

@rscgrad We’ve tried pushing the hard science for S, but he’s not biting. It kind of drives us crazy. DH is a patent agent (no law degree, but passed the patent bar–he has BS & MS in ChEng, and MBA), so we’re well aware of patent law. S currently claims he wants to practice criminal law, but who knows.
