Parents of the HS Class of 2017 - 3.0 to 3.4 GPA

Fingers and toes crossed for folks waiting on ED and EA notices this week and early next!

I think UVM and WWU are this threads Bama. LOL!

I’ll wait and let S click on the accepted students link, if he ever checks on his own or remembers to ask. It will be a LONG week of not telling.

He may have an accidental reminder though, S19 received his first college email today, post PSAT (which was a bit lower than I expected, rats) and sure enough it was from UVM. Which is hysterical for a couple of reasons. One being I don’t recall S17 getting a single email until he expressed interest and two being the timing. We will see if S19 mentions his email to S17. He thought it was funny too.

@rscgrad congrats on Kent State, good school! I agree about patent law as being a very solid career path. My S is semi interested in law (though I’ve counseled against it, I work with a ton of struggling lawyers and see some ugly sides of it), sadly I can’t see him going the hard science route.

@MSU88CHEng - Another unicorn!! I joke w. the hubs that the people in his field are rare as unicorns… Good luck w/ S. At least he can see what Dad does… Not too many of my friends and their kids really understand what H does for a living as a lawyer- they always seem to think something like LA Law, court rooms, and I too am challenged with the D & her desires for college study. I take comfort however in knowing she changes her mind frequently & in 4 year’s time (GOD I HOPE FOR 4 YEARS!) her degree will likely NOT be what she thinks it will be today.

I meant to comment on the UVM merit conversation. I do know that one of their metrics is class rank. Our school doesn’t’ rank (or weight) so it will be very interesting to see how that is interpreted. I am also very curious to see the final FA package. They had “advertised” on their site a 2K scholarship if you filed your FAFSA prior to 11/1. IF the merit offered is close to the NPC then I’m not sure we will be defined as having any need, or a very small amount. I wonder if you get the 2K even if you don’t have “need” by their definition…there was no fine print. LOL!

There is a community service scholarship he will apply for though. Hopefully they send a letter inviting him to apply as that might be a tiny indicator of his chances.

On another note, S received his FA letter from WWU today. That was fast!

I can’t seem to put all my thoughts in one email tonight. Story of my life right now!

WWYD?

One of S’s schools has a social media aspect to their portal, chat, connect, etc. A professor “posted” on his profile asking about intended major, offering to answer questions etc. I think it is based on the general interests selected at registration but not sure. Professor is not in his exact program area but not totally unrelated. I feel like I need to make S respond but UGH!

@klinska We should definitely meet at the UVM event; since it’s about a mile from my house I have no excuse not to take D17 to that one. Will also try to get her to one of the accepted student days up there as well [or see if her dad can take her, more likely].

@eandesmom That is interesting about the rank thing being important for merit at UVM…our school doesn’t rank either, which is probably just as well for my D since she wouldn’t be highly ranked. The school does give out a bar graph with the general distribution of GPAs, though, so it is still pretty clear where she falls. We did actually file the FAFSA by 11/1 but the portal shows it as being “established” on the 3rd, so not sure how that will go. Sucks that they don’t send out FA packages until March. Not expecting anything but it’s hard to compare apples to apples without the full info.

@kt1969 I look forward to being able to see if there is an event in our area lol!

That is interesting on the FAFSA, ours does say established 10/31 but we only received notice that UVM had it last week. As far as rank goes, who really knows. Their online NPC calculator will not run without inputting someting for rank so I contacted them to confirm that kids from schools without ranking will still be considered. Our school doesn’t provide deciles or bar charts (and I have confirmed with our CC and GC that this is the case, they don’t give the colleges anything we can’t see in that area) so all a college will see is the school profile which shows class size and the average gpa. So, yay, he’s in the upper 50%. LOL. What UVM does with that, who knows!

@eandesmom Are you in WA? There is one in Seattle, actually!

One more barbarian at the gate of UVM! Coyote-son is also accepted, but have to wait on merit announcements in late December. I agree with @eandesmom that having to wait, esp for FA in Feb/March stinks - the early acceptance is nice morale boost, but not helpful for actually comparing options.
But let’s focus on the good news - the acceptances are good news - Congrats to all our kids (and to us, for helping our kids craft realistic lists!!)

Congrats, @CoyoteMom! It’s great to have another barbarian!

I don’t know where I got the info that merit info from UVM was coming in mid-December, because it says plain as day in the materials we were sent that it would be late December. Oh well, what’s another couple of weeks? I’m already so squirrelly about ED school next week I don’t know that it makes any difference!

Congrats on all of the good news rolling in!

Congrats on all the acceptances. It seems like most of our kids at least have 1 acceptance under their belts so they have at least a place to go next year!

Hoping that as the FA numbers come in we all get some positive news!

Congrats to the UVM accepted students! And so great to see other acceptances rolling in. Well done, everyone!

S17 was accepted to George Mason University this morning. He got into the Honors College but I don’t see any merit offered. His stats are probably too uneven, 3.5W and 33 ACT. (He got merit from University of Mary Washington – which, interestedly, turned him down for Honors! I think I’d rather take the cash, to be honest.)

GMU is local to us but has a lot to offer so will stay on the consideration list. He’s been accepted to UMW (w/merit), Pitt (no merit offer yet), and two smaller privates with generous merit.

I’m not sure if you already specified somewhere in the thread but was your son put on “Holistic applicant review” for U of Oregon? or has he just not heard anything?

Ok UVM peeps who got in yesterday, did your kid get an email? I am still paranoid about the bouncing situation and S has given NO indication that he remembers portal announcement was this week and so he still doesn’t know. This is going to be a LONG week if I have to wait for that packet, they just mailed them yesterday!

@klinska I know you posted on the other thread about this but I’d call the schools, we only have one that takes PROFILE but they required it period to be considered for FA at all. And at their price tag he might get 2k so I sent it in. 2k x3 years is 6k and well, why throw that away if i don’t have to? And having a loan option is nice, even if you never ever use it. I have heard that if you don’t do it first year, it can be much harder later on and well, things can change and I’m a fan of hedging bets. If it is for the ED school I would absolutely do it.

@CoyoteMom welcome to the party! It does stink, not knowing until that late what the packages really look like across the board. Especially if it’s just one or two you are waiting on!

@tacocat333 congrats on George Mason! It is so interesting to see how the different schools interpret our kids!

@rolani88 I am not sure which poster you are talking to. @curiositycat333 's S has not heard from U of O yet (as far as she knows lol), he applied EA but the SAT’s arrived late so he may not get an answer within the EA timeframe. @CAtransplant’s D was accepted. U of O states that holistic review applies to all applicants

https://admissions.uoregon.edu/freshmen/apply/review

I would interpret that to mean that yours is still simply under review. Did you apply EA? If so it sounds like you should hear by today. If RD, by 4/1. If you are EA and don’t have an update by tomorrow, I would probably call admissions and simply ask.

@eandesmom, my kid got an email as first notification from UVM. The portal didn’t update until about a week later (around the time we got the package in the mail). Looks like with the 12/14 decisions, portals have been updated in a more timely fashion, based on what I saw on the UVM acceptance thread.

Yes, I think each school handles it differently–so far, all of our schools that require CSS Profile have made it clear that it is for institutional need based aid–federal loans aren’t impacted, and merit isn’t impacted. I just checked one of our schools that didn’t have a working NPC for the longest time–it’s fixed now so I ran the numbers–looks like we are leaving $1K/year on the table by not filing CSS Profile. Not sure that will make an appreciable difference in determining affordability. Am going to dig a little deeper this weekend to make sure I’ve got our bases covered.

@klinska yeah, I know the 11/10 kids got an email. We’ve only seen a portal update (which was spot on at 5pm EST lol) and no email…unless it bounced (which is my fea)r and why I was wondering if any of the other 12/14 kids got an email.

I hate it when the NPC doesn’t work OR it shows 2014 or 2015 prices and “awards”. Those numbers mean almost nothing to me.

@eandesmom My D got an email from UVM also. The portal was supposed to update at 5 and she got it earlier than that, maybe 4:45 or so? And I believe it told her she got in…don’t think she ever even looked at the portal [though of course I did], which did update right away.

@eandesmom and @rolani88 sounds like rolani88 was speaking about @curiositycat333 ‘s son but I agree I think she doesn’t know because they haven’t checked the portal yet. In my case, it never changed to stating “under holistic review” it simply changed to Decision made and Admission offered. I did read a thread from a prior year (you can find it under U of Oregon in the alphabetical list of colleges) where some applicants’ status changed to Holistic Review and stayed that way for a while.

@kt1969 thanks, that was my fear. I saw some twitter posts that made me think and email went out and given the history with the bouncing there (one has, from admissions but nothing else) I figured I’d check here first before calling them but think I will call and ask if they sent, and can resend. The bouncing is concerning!

@rolani88 So far my son just hasn’t hear anything. I believe it doesn’t say anything. (As of last Thursday) He messed up with reporting his SAT’s (send his AP tests instead). Kept insisting that it wasn’t a big deal the portal had the SAT part blank. (Wouldn’t they email me if there was a problem?) I will have him check his portal today.
