Parents of the HS Class of 2017 - 3.0 to 3.4 GPA

UGH. UVM says they sent 2 emails yesterday and both bounced. I gave them an alternate email for him. Now to call comcast. UGH!!!

@eandesmom We have comcast and my daughter got hers…weird. Spam folder? Or I guess not, if they actually bounced.

@eandesmom–this has been a recurring issue for your S, right? Definitely get Comcast on it!

grrr. So UVM said they’d email within the next 30 min and that was 90 min ago. Nada. Comcast is going to be a total pita as I’ve tried to contact them before on this and got put into chat and the chat never loaded. Guess I give it another hour or two and call UVM back?

@eandesmom - sounds like you’re already tracking down the bouncing emails, but yes, Coyote-son got a “YES” email from UVM - but I’ve been portal stalking, and the announcement was on the portal before the email arrived.
@eandesmom and @klinska and any other Allegheny peeps - that portal is updated now too – but it just says Coyote-son will get a decision by postal mail. Was surprised that they got the decision done, given his ACT scores were so late, and maybe not having the decision posted means it’s a rejection?
@tacocat333 - Congrats on Mason Honors - Coyote-son has been accepted to Mason Honors College also! Yay!! It’s local for us too, and the smaller class size for the Honors College is keeping it under consideration here too. I didn’t see anything about merit, not even a link to Financial Aid office, so I am just hoping that means merit scholarships aren’t decided yet.
Yay! Am definitely doing the embarrassing to Coyote-son Happy Dance!

@CoyoteMom, congrats to Coyote-son! Sounds like he and Taco Son have quite a bit in common (including dearth of merit info). I’m liking the Honors College more and more as I learn about it. What’s his intended major? Marketing here.

Yes Tacocat, our kids seem to have a lot in common - Coyote-son is also looking primarily at small private schools. Coyote-son wants to major in History - here’s hoping he gets interested in some of the science classes his little high school doesn’t offer. Am very excited for him about research opportunities, and maybe it’s just my background, but it is easier for me to picture science research than history. His essay was actually about pursuing research in swarm robotics!

@CoyoteMom does the Allegheny portal say a decision has been made? S’s says that everything has been received and is under review. Which is what it has said since the app was sent in pretty much. It does say he will be notified by postal mail. My understanding is that the decisions are not posted in the portal at all, which is not uncommon.

@CoyoteMom, did your S apply EA to Allegheny? We are RD, so a long wait ahead for us (maybe–depends on ED)…

Just heard from St Michael’s…admitted with 17K merit. Actually rather disappointed as NPC predicted 24K, which is a pretty big difference over 4 years. But, she’s feeling good that she’s 4 for 4.

Awesome, @kt1969! Congrats! Sorry the merit isn’t what you were hoping for–does what they’re offering keep them in play for cost-wise?

@klinska Um, yeah, probably. She likes UVM better than St Mike’s but guessing we won’t get any $$ from them, in which case it will something like 17K more expensive per year to go to UVM, so that will be something to consider.

@eandesmom and @klinska - yes, I can’t remember exactly what the Allegheny portal said before, but now it says: “Your application for admission has been evaluated. Your admission decision will be delivered by postal mail.”
And yes, we did apply EA - wanted son to have as much good news as possible before applying to the LACs where he is in that 25% to 50%ile marks based on his stats. Ugh - the waiting for both merit and RD news is going to be excruciating for me - I think Coyote-son has a much healthier (than me!) focus on the here an now, so the trick is to keep my anxious waiting hidden from him!
@klinska - fingers crossed for your ED – the waiting is annoying me no end – but then, I just need to refocus - more waiting means (hopefully) more choices.
Congrats to @kt1969 – yay for another acceptance, with $$ attached. Maybe you can share in my new mantra - it’s good to wait, because it may mean more choices!

@eandesmom, @klinska thanks! D knows but only because I forwarded the email suggesting we put down a deposit to her. Then I got on the portal, took a print screen, went home, asked for permission to access the portal and then showed her the print out with the acceptance.

Congratulations to all on acceptances!

@CoyoteMom thanks! Guess that officially means no decision yet for S but it does encourage portal stalking on my end. LOL! Oh well, there is one other portal I am stalking so I may as well stalk 2 at the same time. I would really love it if he heard from both before the holidays but am thinking if no portal update by those schools before they go on break…probably not till after the holidays.

UVM Scholarship info is on the portal!

$15k Presidential for S. It is about as good as I think we could have expected, it didn’t seem to bump up higher unless you were in the top 10% or had other things that might indicate that.

Congrats @eandesmom and thanks for the heads up – I texted D to check the UVM portal. She was awarded an $18K Presidential Scholarship!!! I’m doing a happy dance.

@kt1969 S briefly considered St. Michael’s–he received their book award last year for his school for “academic achievement with a social conscience” (which kind of makes me giggle…). But the school was too small for him, and he was afraid he might be too “conservative” for them (which also makes me giggle). But he liked the book, and has quoted it in English essays this year (First They Killed My Father by Loung Ung, a bit heavy for a teen boy, but he’s into history…).

Congrats on the UVM good news!

S is becoming less blissfully oblivious–he’s actually paying attention to his mail lately and is slightly annoyed that it’s just more college promotional material. I think the recent MSU scholarships and James Madison mail made him realize that the mail can be useful, interesting, and fun.

Wonderful news all around. Congrats to all admitted and I’m sorry for those who did not. We are still waiting for financial aid packages. I think all the schools we have left are RD so we have a bit of a wait.

Presidential Scholarship ($15K) for D at UVM! What the NPC showed. Keeps the school in play.
