@klinksa congrats! That is awesome! No news here.
@“Queen’s Mom” --great on your D’s hard work in math!
@klinska --great news on UVM!
Hi.
So far I got in UT (Knoxville), Auburn, Alabama, ECU, and Hollins with this grade range and an average SAT (1370). Even got three scholarships. Just wanted to let you know your kids will be ok!!!
D got her acceptance to CSU. Auto-admit so not a surprise, but it was still exciting for both of us. CU-Boulder EA is Nov 15, but now she’s thinking she may not apply there at all. She’s taking two DE classes at CU and enjoys them, but she’s pretty sure she’d prefer CSU for the overall atmosphere. For now she’s going to skip CU EA and apply RD if she decides she wants to.
We had fun looking at dorms. She decided between dorm style and learning community, she’d like to be in the International Community (don’t have to be international student to live there) to get to know people from different countries and cultures. That dorm is also the substance-free community, so probably not a big party dorm! I really like the dorm style which has a central common area and two private bedrooms. That gives you the roommate experience but with privacy as well. She says she thinks she could be happy at CSU, so that’s a relief in case the non-safeties don’t work out.
@klinska, congrats on UVM! Nothing here yet. I’ll probably keep checking over next week, but I’m assuming she’s in the Dec pool.
@“Queen’s Mom”, nothing wrong with bragging on that improvement. A C looks much better on the transcript than a D or F for sure.
@maeve123, congrats on those acceptances and it’s really nice to hear about scholarships. I hope my D will see some nice ones too. I grew up near Knoxville, so I always think about Tennessee rather than Texas when I see “UT”, probably unlike most people.
@snoozn Great that you got another admit. I’m still anxious that S17 had only finished one application. He was supposedly going to work on some this weekend. But so far it hasn’t happened. I’ve been planing that T-giving was going to be California application time. But it really worried me that the servers will be slow…
ARGG… As if I don’t have enough stress going on right now. The CA applications have a drop dead Nov 30th deadline, they are 2/3 of his schools and he won’t be the only kid doing them over the holidays.
I did get the FAFSA in yesterday. And S17 did finally check is UofO portal. It says they don’t have his SAT scores. We ‘sent’ them but only about a week before the Nov 1st deadline. I’ve read elsewhere that schools download these scores in batches. Is that what’s going on & we just have to be patient. I may have to make S17 check, he changed the password to his SAT login and I can’t get in anymore.
He’s just being so stubborn and I can do things myself mom. Don’t keep nagging me.
P.S. First quarter grades just got in. They look great except for AP Physics. It seems he always has one class he’s getting a C in.
Congrats @snoozn on the CSU admit! It’s great that your D likes her safety. I like the sound of the dorm style you described–sounds like the best of both worlds (unless your roommate never comes out of her room).
For those of you who applied EA to UVM, it appears that the decisions may come out on a rolling basis after all (thanks for that info, @eandesmom!). Don’t mean to add to the crazy we all are dealing with right now, but you may hear sooner than you think!
@Queen’s Mom, I’ll be celebrating if my D brings in a C in AP Stats (was a C- at the mid-quarter mark). I have absolutely no visibility into my kids’ grades until report cards come out on Friday, thanks to the new online grade access system being launched this year. We’re flying blind.
@maeve123, congrats on your admits! Every success story on this thread is music to my ears!
For those of you who are continuing to get apps in, good luck! You’re almost there–the finish line is in sight!
@curiositycat333, I got the same “I can do it myself!” from my D (accompanied by tears and dramatic storming off upstairs), so i feel you. It’s like they are 3 years old again and wanting to put their coats on by themselves. Except the stakes are just a little higher now.
@snoozn Oh my D has “essay avoidance fever” She has not completed (nor started) one application with essay. It’s stressing me out.
In positive news
S got one more app in yesterday. Largely because I made him but it did get done. LOL! It only needed a music resume supplement, all he had to do was review and edit the draft so we got it done and in.
I’ve been pushing for another app to get done this weekend as well but I feel like it’s slipping away. Which kind of bites as next weekend is shot for him between the play and a jazz festival so that means 3 apps, all with supplements over the holiday weekend. YUCK!
QOTD for this thread.
Is it just be or is no one being rejected to schools on the main thread? I get focusing on the positive and I have seen some where kids are getting rejected for scholarships but zero outright admission rejections. To be fair I’ve not seen any rejections reported here either but all of the data points are helpful to me, both good and bad. What do you just think?
Quarter Grades
SUPER frustrated with the school/school district at the moment. We changed the online system, several teachers did not update some of the final quarter assignments with grades as of yet and the quarter ended Thursday. In theory I think they get a few days to get the grades in past the end date. However in the other system that “holds” the grades, nothing is in for Q1…but it has moved to Q2 as being the “current” quarter! So…the systems aren’t talking to each other and who knows what is final! It is frustrating on 2 counts. 2 classes at least have assignments that were first quarter assignments that don’t have grades entered yet that could make a difference. Another hasn’t had a grade added in 3 weeks! And I am sure will not as he’s immersed in the fall play. So ugh. Not a stellar q1. 2 B-, one B, one B+ and 3 A’s but all those B’s are in the Core and AP classes. It would have been more livable but S bombed a poetry test in AP lit, who also didn’t have any grades/assignments into the portal all of last week to compensate (more fall play) UGH. It is what it is. I wouldn’t care and amm not really worried about the semester but at least one school Q1. Of course I have zero clue if the school auto sends them or how that process will even work.
@Hankster1361 these days H touches a lot of things, he works in product development, airplane configuration and integration. Some stuff he can talk about, some not so much! LOL
@kt1969 and @snoozn selfishly I am glad we aren’t alone in the not hearing from UVM yet. I did hear that last year they released decisions over the 4 weeks in between the 2 EA dates. I don’t know that it will happen again this year but given that @klinska heard a day later than the 1st batch is somewhat encouraging.
@“Queen’s Mom” I think all of us on this thread can relate to a sigh of relief sometimes with grades, even if it is a C! You should be proud. I’ve always told my kids, as long as they are giving 100% and working as hard as they can, if they best that can be ends up a C and they’ve really done their best, I’m proud of them. Effort counts more with me. It may not with colleges but life skills are more important than transcripts at the end of the day.
@maeve123 congratulations! I love seeing all those acceptances, that’s great.
@snoozn congrats on CSU even if it is a sure thing, it is sure nice seeing it be official! I can see the logic behind not bothering with the CU app. If she knows she likes CSU better as her safety (and wants to be a tad further away from home lol) then why bother? Not to mention it’s cheaper. We didn’t see the international dorm but did see the engineering one, is it over in that part of campus? I liked that area a lot. So the bedroom itself would be a single? From a space and study standpoint (and messiness lol) that would be great. My SD was in a suite style with single bedrooms and a common area (4) with one shared bath but has said in retrospect she wishes she was in a dorm with a common hall bath as her friends that were, met a lot more people.
Sorry about the online grade system, @eandesmom. Our school’s issues don’t sound quite as complicated (they simply shut down the old system and we’re just waiting for the new one to be released to students and families–so no information at all until it’s too late to do anything to mitigate).
Regarding decisions on the main thread, to me it looks like most of the decisions are for rolling admissions schools that are safeties for those kids–lots of merit chasing, auto-admits based on GPA or test scores. There are some notable exceptions, and I don’t mean to minimize their accomplishments, but I think it might look different once the decisions from the highly selective schools start coming in. That group seems like they’re pretty comfortable with each other–I wouldn’t expect that they’d keep quiet about rejections. I agree that’d getting the reject info is as valuable as the acceptance info-our Naviance doesn’t do a great job of showing rejections, and it’s frustrating.
Spoke too soon. He’s started working on the Cal State App. Although he is just out the door to a social thing.
@endesmom I think there are two things going on as to why we aren’t hearing about more rejections. 1) No one really wants to post their rejections 2) Most of the early apps are stats bases ‘sure’ things schools. (EA, rolling) or EA/ED. When we get to the ED admissions dates (mid Dec) & the lottery school regular admissions dates (March) I expect to hear about more rejections. Except for schools which guarantee hearing in two weeks, or tell everyone on the same date. Acceptance come out earlier than rejections.
As to grades. I have a thing in my house. I don’t nag until grades get below a B. (B-- is my threshold) But I do try and remember to talk about the good as well as the bad. Had a conversation about how to improved the Physics grade this morning, but did remember to complement the kid on the A+ is APCS and A in English. Overall even with a C in Physics his GPA is still on a upward trend. Can’t forget to compliment him. The Physics class is Physics I & II and a huge amount of work. It’s just disappointing to see the teachers “I know he could do better” comment.
As a general rule B and above are ok with me as long as the child is truly doing their best. And I definitely acknowledge when they are!
I honestly don’t think S17 is putting in 100%. I think his heart and head is in a million places between the work, the fall play and the election. I’m not harping on it with him as that never helps but I do think a tad more effort in a couple of spots would go a long way. He will put it in once the play is over I think. I am likely more frustrated as both of the B- are SO close to a straight B it kind of kills me and same thing with the B+.
But the world will not end. He has a hard load (for him) and while I would have thought it was quite similar to last year, he says it is a lot harder. I am just glad the poetry unit is over in AP Lit, the grade should come right back up now that it’s done. LOL!
D finished her Gonzaga app which included an essay about what speaker you think could inspire Gonzaga students. She chose Al Gore (for climate change issues) and I thought it was a very strong essay. One of their school-specific questions was about whether the student was a musician. D is definitely not, but I know a number of students here are and it looks like it would give them an edge if anyone’s considering Gonzaga.
I agree with others about why we’re only hearing acceptances so far. My plan is to continue to list all decisions on this thread, but otherwise stick with the “official” acceptance thread since the main 2017 thread grows so fast. I guess I’d list rejections on the main thread since there’s no official rejection thread! :))
I’m not naggy about B grades either, but H is, which I find annoying. When oldest D was getting too many C’s (at a school with no AP/honors etc) neither of us were happy. H decided to tie her dance class money to grades. My parents used to think it was terrible that some of my hs friends’ parents paid for grades and that was my feeling as well. But she never got below a B after that, so I guess he was on to something.
If anyone’s interested in the dorm style, it’s called “community-style double corner”: http://housing.colostate.edu/towersfloorplan
I haven’t seen anything similar at the other colleges we’re looking at which is too bad. Apparently there are limited numbers of this style, but I am putting down a housing deposit tomorrow which is the first possible day.
@Fishnlines29, how many supplementals does your D have to write? Maybe it’s time to start bribing her! Thank goodness D only has two more schools (RD) that need them. VA Tech “strongly recommends” (which we all know translates to “requires”) three essays of up to 250 words chosen from a list with a decent variety of questions. I’m predicting one of D’s choices will be the one about what superpower you would pick and why.
@eandesmom, sounds like your school change-over came at exactly the wrong time for seniors – uggh. Try not to worry too much about your S not being 100% into college stuff. He sounds like a great kid with a lot of passions and that’s far more important. He’ll go to college! Regarding the international dorm at CSU: Westfall which is on the corner of campus, definitely not as nicely situated as the Academic Village area which includes the engineering dorm.
@curiositycat333, glad to hear your S has started on those California apps. From the little I skim over about it on the main thread it sounds like a real nightmare.
Are people actually getting denials yet? Many schools that have rolling admissions give out the ‘yeses’ right away but if students are close, or the school wants to wait for first quarter or first semester grades, I’d think they are probably still working on them.
@snoozn That looks really cool. Although my concern is all of those rooms are so small. I’ve seen lots of things but so many doors are triples or quads. Back when I went to UCSC, I lived in a college that had apartments and they even had commune style apartments where there were no walls but 7 students lived there.
Those dorms seems opposite. Give kids who are used to having their own bedroom some private space… I know living with 2 other kids would be so hard for my introverted kid.
Wish I could get S17 interested in CSU. There is still time. He’s just getting so stubborn. Told me yesterday that one reach school isn’t on his list. (Not a big deal… but I think he should be one more school on instead either CSU or UC Merced. )
As to the California apps. He has started on the Cal State (Cal Poly & his safety Humboldt) Those are easy applications for CA students. It’s all stats based, no essay, no letter of rec. A few hours and it should be done. Except he left for his Robotics thing & is clearly now back to doing homework.
It’s the University of California App with the 4/8 short answer questions that MUST be submitted by Nov. 30th that I’m worried about. At least I’d planned on his spending his Thanksgiving working on it.
Update for us…submitted College of Wooster, McDaniel, and University of Redlands last night. Woot! Still have a 12/1 and 12/15 EA to go, then some RD. But getting there.
Right, @twoinanddone, the only answer we got so far was a request for 1st semester grades from Pitt, which is rolling admission. I figure she’s on the cusp there and it could go either way. Not a rejection nor an admission.
I am sure you are all correct on the lack of rejections, I guess I assumed that for EA we’d see those as well but maybe not yet.
What College at UVM was your child admitted to?
I am wondering if there is an relationship to admittances based on the college(s) applied to and admitted to. I’d kind of forgotten that each had their own entrance requirements so went back and looked. S should be fine for his first choice college on their additional requirements (required to have Biology + either Chem or Physics) but interestingly enough does fall short on the “reccomended” for his 2nd choice (3 years versus 4 on FL).
@kt1969 YAY for 3 more apps in!!! that has to feel good.
@curiositycat333 that’s progress! At least if those are done before thanksgiving…then that’s all you have to deal with that weekend right? The UC ones?
S told me me he may finish one tonight (no play), we will see if that really happens but I think he is coming around to the idea that if he does this one, I’ll basically leave him alone until thanksgiving weekend where he will have to crank out the final 2.
@snoozn those rooms look claustrophobic to me lol. At this point we aren’t really looking at the dorm scenarios although I did go back and check on campus requirements for all his schools yesterday as I hadn’t been tracking that. His take, after his one week class this summer, is a dorm is a dorm and he will be fine in whatever. Which is a change in position to be sure! Kind of cool, one of the kids from that class is coming down to watch the play this week. His brother though would really like that dorm layout a lot. Corner of campus might be better than the academic village for classes. Nice once you are there but it was a HIKE to the engineering buildings from there!
I like your D’s speaker choice for the Gonzaga app. One of the to be written essays is on an EC and I am quite curious to see what S will choose. I SO wish S was applying there. I think for me that will always be the one that got away lol.
Had an interesting chat with S last night. He mentioned his AP Lit/Theater Tech Teacher had told him that if he ends up going to school in PA that he better register to vote there. LOL. I asked him if the results, and recent activities in places had made him reconsider any of his school choices and he had an emphatic no as an answer.
He is very engaged in things…at the end of the day though I think it boils down to what has always been a bit true for him. He is ok with a B and doesn’t have the need or drive to get A’s. He would rather use that energy elsewhere if there is extra time. He’ll do what it takes to ensure they don’t fall below B’s but it really doesn’t eat him up if they are a B, even if he is quite capable of moving it to an A.
While our HS doesn’t have any details posted on the report card thing, I did find info on our rival HS’s website. Since it’s the same district I am pretty positive it will work much the same. Theirs seems to indicate quarter grades will be available online on the 17th and mailed out the same day. Which implies teachers still have time to add in items that were complete before the quarter end. So hopefully that is the case. It does look like teachers are in the system this morning adding in last weeks assignments. His AP Calc grade went up to a B+ this morning based on an item that was before the quarter end (that I was a bit cranky about not seeing credit for) and APES has the potential to move to a B if she enters one thing. I need to chill (and luckily I am NOT obsessing about this in front of S lol) but the fact that he is less than 1% away from moving the stupid B- to B’s is really killing me. Unfortunately, to the point above, he did blow off an assignment in English due to being overwhelmed so that quarter grade will stand.
I probably should be more upset about S19’s current D in French 4!
I think the real issue here is me. I alternate between thinking everything will be fine and freaking out that his safeties are really matches and the matches really reaches and he doesn’t get in anywhere. Or anywhere we can afford. He’s super chill about it all though and in general I think I’m hiding it well. Once he has one or 2 acceptances in, I’ll be fine.
Once again I’ve mentioned Stem2017 when I meant you regarding UVM. No clue why I keep doing that. Must have more coffee!!! Too late to edit the post. Sigh.
@eandesmom son was admitted to the business school. I also wanted to let you know I was able to check the portal this morning and his status was updated to admitted. Hope this helps. I hope your son gets good news soon!
@kt1969 Great news. Must be exciting to hear & know you are in several schools.
And last night I took a peek at Naviance again. They fixed the SAT problem. It’s nice to see the little round circle where it should sit and a bit reassuring. Looking at Naviance I can’t see why either Oregon school would reject him.
I’m just anxious about him getting that UC App Done… UCSC is now my top pick for him. Thankfully it seems he has no after school practice for band until after Thanksgiving so hopefully that gives him more time. Didn’t finish the Cal State app… but at least he’s working on it.
