Parents of the HS Class of 2017 - 3.0 to 3.4 GPA

Any of you using the CA and submitting outside recs? Wondering what the process is.

Ack, hanging in suspense here…DD17 got what looks like it could be an admit letter from Knox, which I stashed so she would open it while I was here [she gets home while I’m out picking up DS from school]…got home and she has gone to the library! No idea when she’ll be home. I don’t want to tell her it’s here bc she has an essay due Wednesday that she’s working on, so I don’t want her to be distracted, but it’s kinda killing me. Portal hasn’t changed, but the AO told us at her interview that they wait to update the portal for several days bc they want you to get your letter first. It seems awfully early to get a decision as the app was only due 11/1, but it looks an awful lot like what the AO said their admit letters look like. Fingers crossed!

@kt1969 Fingers crossed. That suspense while you wait for them to open mail is painful.

@kt1969, keeping everything crossed for you and your D! Where does Knox fall in her rank of preference?

@klinska That is an excellent question. I have no idea. We haven’t visited, but she liked what she heard at the local interview, and is intrigued by the trimester system. My guess is that she won’t end up there, but will give her a boost to get admitted someplace. and maybe with money!

Accepted to Knox with 20K scholarship!

Wonderful!

Yay, @kt1969! That’s a sweet scholarship!

@klinska Yeah, pretty psyched about that. Doubt she will end up there, but it does look like a really nice school.

@kt1969 Trimester system… You mean like the “quarter” system that most of the schools my son is applying runs on. And yes… quarter is a odd word for it. 3 “quarters” make up a full year. And then the 4th quarter is the summer semester. That quarter system is what I’m used to, semesters are what seem odd to me.

I think it depends on the school… For example, WPI has a quarter schedule, but that means four seven -week terms during the school year. They take 3 courses during each term.

@curiositycat333 I guess that’s right. At Knox they take 3 classes per trimester, and have a lovely long break that starts right before Thanksgiving and goes until just after New Year’s.

WOW @kt1969 that’s a long break! DS2 was looking at Knox but it somehow dropped off the list before we visited. I think because it’s not far from home “as the crow flies” but actually getting there is backwards and long.

DS2 is supposed to find out this week about one of his top choices. So far, nada. :(( Hopefully it’ll be good news and doesn’t arrive with more scholarship opportunities with essays to write. He’s down to having just 1 more to go ^:)^

Today is D17’s last day before his 5 day weekend for Thanksgiving. Only a week to the the UC applications in. I talked with him last night and…

a) he really has NO homework over the break. It’s district policy but some teachers just circumvent things by making major projects or tests due on Tues or Wed after break.

b) He has most of the data entry done for the UC App done. So he mostly has to write the essays… UC has replaced their similar to common app essay, with 4 short 300 word “Insight” questions. (Pick 4 out of 8.) This will be like pulling teeth for him… but I’m not sure.

c) My IL’s arrive this afternoon. Hopefully S17 will get to have some fun and not spend the whole time trying to write essays.

@kt1969 The long break sound good. But the UC’s quarter… START really late… in late Sept. and go through early Dec. we don’t get that break. My D12 who went to a school on a semester system often had only about a week and a half between Thanksgiving & Xmas break making it not worth it to fly her home over Thanksgiving from across the country.

WWU does the quarter system. It is a long holiday break but as mentioned before, they also start late and end late. Which for most local kids can be problematic for summer jobs at home however many of the schools around here are on the same schedule.

ZERO progress on apps around here…should be a fun weekend. NOT.

@kt1969 congrats on Knox! That is very exciting. Even if she doesn’t end up there she now officially has options.

I want options. LOL!

D is admitted to Western Washington U!!! Her top choice!

yay @brindlegreyhound !! Congrats!!

@brindlegreyhound fabulous news!!! Go Vikings! Hopefully we hear soon as well.

Congrats to @brindlegreyhound Daughter! I just love hearing good news! Happy Thanksgiving!

Things are going pretty well here – mostly in a holding pattern until mid December. I’ve actually been researching schools for S18. D’s third progress report came out with all A’s, though I don’t think they send any kind of update to the colleges. She had a B in Calc on the second report. Her two “real” classes at hs are AP Calc BC and AP Physics 1. She’s lucky to have a great teacher for Physics – one of the few teachers at her school with a PhD. She had the same teacher for AP Chem (her toughest class in hs). Her other two “classes” are advisory and academic assistant, so I’d be pretty unhappy with anything other than A’s. From what I can get out of her, the two DE classes at CU-Boulder are going well.

She just got her merit offer from OSU (three weeks after acceptance) which was $3000 more than the NPC showed – nice. Even so, it’s still significantly more expensive than CSU. She does think OSU’s sustainability program sounds great, but I don’t see it happening unless she got into OSU honors but not CSU honors. (Even then, probably not).

I am raising my hand on “gentle reminders.” D has been doing great so far. She’s submitted ten apps (two of which have since dropped off the list, ah well – they weren’t tough ones). She has four more RD apps and two honors apps. I don’t want to be on her back since she’s already done a ton of work, but we’re going on a big Christmas vacation and I would love for her to have everything done before then.

@klinska, wow, another! You’re putting the rest of us to shame.

@momofa12, congrats on Towson! They are on my S18’s list.

@eandesmom, thanks for the UVM info. I suspected as much, but now I won’t waste any time checking. I’m keeping myself down to general portal-checking just a couple of times a week, because I know we’re pretty unlikely to hear anything from any school before mid December. I hope the music angle works out well for your S, though it does sound like a pain. Oldest D had to do a few visits for dance auditions.

@kt1969, I think this makes up for your long wait – an acceptance AND some really sweet merit. Congrats!

@brindlegreyhound, congrats and wow, first choice school! Does this mean you’re done? :D/
