Our school GC requires at least one application be submitted by November 1st (Not all!) and requires the teachers upload LORs by October 24th.
We, DS, his teachers, GC and I, accomplished it, so I feel happy. :D/
Now about that scholarship apps, that is his Skin in the game. :!!
@carachel2 Thank you for the info. I’m going to see if I can schedule an info session/ tour. I mentioned visiting it to S17 over the weekend and he is open to it.
How does a student move a school from “colleges I’m thinking about” to “colleges I’m applying to” in Naviance? I have never seen a way to do that. At D17s HS, when they fill out a transcript request form and their stuff gets sent out, the office moves the school from “thinking” to “applying”.
@payn4ward Just discovered that myself. Must be many people filling out this Pitt app right now because I have started the app. Knowing S17 he won’t complete it until he visits but I figure might as well get the ball rolling. I entered H in and just saw it spinning and spinning so every two or three minutes I hit save. Next thing I knew S17 had 5 father entries.
@paveyourpath Yes, Pitt is definitely still on the list. As a matter of fact, we are going back for a second visit shortly. D17 was accepted into the College of Arts and Sciences & HC there. Waiting on the big MAC…or not. 5 fathers? That will be tough to enter on the FAFSA/CSS!
@kt1969 In our implementation of Naviance the student cannot move a schools from ‘thinking’ to ‘applying’. It is a function of the GC office, triggered by processing the transcript request (a manual step).
When D14 was applying to colleges, UChicago was her number 1 stalker school. Lots of stuff in the mail, much of it around their new Molecular Engineering program. Then one day she received a UChicago T-shirt, but it was sized to fit a Barbie doll, “hint, hint, Molecular Engineering does tiny!” I thought it was hilarious. A few days later, they sent her a normal size t-shirt as an “apology”.
I used to be jealous of the parents with students at schools with Naviance but not anymore … Common App is so much more straight forward. Once a recommender or the GC have uploaded something, it can be assigned to however many schools CA allows. Of course, everybody needs to know that the LORs need to be neutral and not use a name of a college. But once a LOR is up, it can be assigned and used as the student wishes. My kid still waits for a third LOR where allowed but is not stressing about it. It’s just the cherry on the top, if the teacher gets to write it.
@kt1969 At my son’s school Naviance is a bit more open. He was able to change his schools to “applying to” and mark whether applying EA, ED, Rolling, RD, etc. This was a requirement for each student and it was due weeks prior to the 11/1 deadline so GCs could get organized. I think our Naviance is fairly open in other ways as we can see lots of stats about how many have applied (class of 2017) as well as the past 10 years. How many early or RD, average stats, etc.
I have a parent login that doesn’t give me as much access, but I’ve watched my S17 while he’s been in his account.
Our Naviance is very similar to what phoenixmomof2 has.
Also, if we add a school on Common App, it gets automatically added to “applying to” in Naviance.
The only issue is that even after deleting a school on CA, it stays on Naviance and there is no way to delete a school in Naviance.
Today’s GC newsletter says,
120 of 140 (86%) seniors have applied to at least one college thus far.
39 (28%) seniors have already been admitted to one or more colleges.
@Ghibelline2017 Depends on what you want Naviance for? Our school only barely uses Naviance. it’s mostly helpful for the stats on what schools kids got in. No LOR or other details are uploaded.
Common App can be good but for my son it only applies to 1/8 schools…
I think I like Pitt better than D but she did eliminate a few schools from her list as she deemed that she would attend Pitt over them. Too bad they don’t have an automatic scholarship like Alabama but of course we saw what that did to Temple.
Son’s soccer team won the NYC semi finals late last night. We got home at 11pm, just in time to catch the last TWO HOURS of the Series! Congrats Cubby fans!
@itsgettingreal The UMD status page is so strange. After seeing what you wrote about your D’s app showing complete on 11/2/16, I checked my son’s, ** which I know has been complete for a week…**
Today? Seriously???
Does this mean we need to call to make sure we hit the deadline? PITA!!!
Anyone have any experience with Clarkson University? How about their business school?
Son17 is interested in business/entrepreneurship/innovation and if he does not go to school in the Boston area is looking at schools with access to outdoor stuff. He likes that it’s not too big. He’s not into frats, preppy stuff, and huge team sports, although he himself may play a sport there ( has verbal/email offer to play sport). He doesn’t need a huge social scene, he doesn’t party. He’s your typical boy that likes to bike, skateboard, snowboard, ultimate frisbee, lax, and then chilling and watching movies/eating/playing games/listening to music with friends. He’ll probably stay involved in some clubs he likes i.e. Model UN. DECA, and maybe find some new clubs too.
We haven’t had a chance to visit. With his grades and stats he should be accepted. He might get some merit $. I think of the school as kind of a smaller UVM for him, with a better biz department.
I only know a few kids that have gone there. One kid was literally a robotics genius, with a perfect SAT score and very high gpa who liked hiking and camping. The other kid also went for engineering.
This is the only school on my son’s list that we did not visit. He submitted an app for RD. We’ll try to visit in the next 4-8 weeks.
Congrats to the Cubbies; if we had to lose, then this is a team I would have picked. It was a great series and a noble battle. Now, when is spring training exactly?
