Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

Over 6,000 posts since I last logged in. You guys are incredible! I have been reading on and off though, just not logging in. Congratulations to everyone with acceptances and scholarships.

We had a rough six weeks after a deferred SCEA but now all is well and DK has received a first admission. We all do sleep better and have high(er) hopes for the RD round. On the other hand, I just would like to call it a day and buy a shirt, as @MotherOfDragons said above.

If we could have a do-over, I probably would advise an ED somewhere and lots and lots and lots of EAs everywhere and all over the place. Would have made sleeping easier. Alas, there will not be a next time.

Other than that, most everything is well here in the South. We had another storm last weekend with 30,000 losing power and many trees on roofs. We got spared this time. Thank God. And the winter temperatures have been benign, too. Did I ever tell you how I hate the cold? Can’t do it …

Happy Sunday everyone!

@srk2017, sorry that your S didn’t make the Interview for the BS/MD program. It is a tough road.

And congrats to all with good news. I love hearing it.

Feeling less pissy today :). It’s good to have this thread to gripe on, because I don’t want to gripe to D17 and make her feel bad about any of her choices. Truly, she has some great options and will be happy with any of the four that she’s been accepted to so far. I just want them all to be free. [-(

@cleoforshort well congrats to her for making it to this point! My ds is one of two at his school but I never considered the rec being difficult for them. My ds and his friend who also made it could not be more different. If my ds pursues this, I am sure he will have zero expectations.

@Dolemite and @AngelaD - thanks very much for your insights on the Presidential Scholars program. It is an honor for her school as well, so I will encourage (but not nag) her to apply and keep expectations low.

Congrats to @cleoforshort and @crazym0m on the Presidential nominations

@STEM2017 Congrats on Barrett - my D has a friend who got big MAC and is very happy there.

@vandyeyes and @what???!! - that is super! That program is extremely competitive. You must be thrilled. @srk2017 - the odds are very long, but still sorry that your S didn’t make the cut.

@dfbdfb Congrats on the scholarship and Presidential Scholars! Yes, the weekend of 2/25 is extremely overbooked! My D has an ironclad commitment then and has already had to decline one invitation.

@MotherOfDragons That result at UMD has me scratching my head!? Wonder if there was an error or if they notify in waves? But it sounds like she’s still in the running for big MAC at UA, so that’s encouraging.

I love hearing everybody’s news. What a great bunch of kids!

Thanks @mamaedefamilia! He was admitted to ASU and has applied to Barrett. Waiting on an answer. Fingers crossed.

UMD folks: Anyone’s student having luck submitting honors college preference? Also, anyone understand this on hte honors college website: “All students should complete the FAFSA in order to qualify for scholarships.” Does that include for the B/K?

What exactly is the Presidential Scholars program? (Not that we’re looking for more work here, but when people first mentioned it, I thought it was a school-specific scholarship. It is a general merit-based one?)

D17 was beyond distraught the other day when a scholarship deadline (the Elks) slipped through the cracks and she was locked out of the next phase (a formality – transcripts and test scores). Ugh!

@LoveTheBard Prez Scholars is invite only and is kids who have perfect/almost perfect SAT or ACT scores. Winners go to Washington DC to meet the President - no $$.

Thanks - I just looked it up. There’s a phone number on there to call if you have the scores and think you might be eligible (D17 had a 1580 on the SAT and a 35 SAT, so I think she’s in the ballpark). I saw that one kid from her school is on the list (probably for Arts). Worth a phone call.

At the risk of turning this political, meeting the president would have been a whole lot more appealing over the past 8 years than it would today :frowning:

@LoveTheBard Unless you are in a state like Wyoming or SDakota, you need a perfect score to be nominated, not in the ballpark, unfortunately.

I’m way behind on my “Congrats” but I think I’m caught up on liking posts. Congrats to the recent nominees, accepted, etc!!! <:-P

DS’s Science Bowl team just got 4th in Regional Science Bowl. (Did well, had fun, and were the only team to defeat the eventual winners in any match.) I did have the thought that meeting Dr. Steven Chu or Dr. Ernest Moniz would be a lot more exciting for my physics major than the nominee to head the Dept of Energy.

JOTD: Dollar Tree bought Family Dollar for about $8 billion. It would have been $10 billion, but Family Dollar was dented.

@LoveTheBard Also at the risk of being political: LOL!

That is the tiniest ballpark ever! How many kids get perfect scores? (off to google…)

ACT: around 2k kids per year get a 36

Old SAT (=2400) 583 kids

It doesn’t tell me how many were living in the US (I’m assuming that’s a selection criteria)

Cohort application submitted. Thank goodness…all apps are finally at an end!!

Yay @Mom2aphysicsgeek <:-P

@LoveTheBard I know the two kids at our school had perfect scores but some states they take less. Its a certain number by state. Never hurts to call tho.

@crazym0m and @MotherOfDragons - Tiny ballpark indeed!! Microscopic, I’d say.

Names of all presidential scholar nominees are listed here:

https://www2.ed.gov/programs/psp/2017/candidates.pdf

For those presidential scholar nominees, were the families or the schools notified that the student should apply?

FWIW, my daughter’s a Presidential Scholars finalist, but didn’t have a perfect score on the ACT, but did on English and (I think it was) math. Reading through the selection criteria, it isn’t a 36 ACT/1600 SAT, but rather some particular distribution within the subscores.

Edited for clarity.
