Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@CA1543 I would check with the GC on Monday as that due date seems a little early, but assuming transcripts are ready, I think they can be attached to the mid-year report and uploaded on common app.

You should check the schools anyway, because some require self reported grades (it’s possible these are all non-common app users like state schools)

Oh yeah, cap and gown cha ching. And it gets better-her sister, who is the same height and weight, is NOT allowed to use her sister’s cap and gown next year when she graduates. What a rip X(

Here’s that software that D18 is using: http://www.teensmartdriving.com/

Avatar: I tend not to change my avatars, although I did add a “Rise Up” banner to my FB pic today :D.

Here’s a question: Do you email the schools your kid has decided to take off of your list to tell them you’re not coming (and by you, I mean, the kid). Or do you just not respond? I’m a big fan of RSVP’s, and I’m actually bothered by the fact that there are four acceptances and we’re just keeping mum about it to them. It’ feels a little rude 8-} I recognize this is irrational…

@CA1543 - Our GC uploaded in common app and all the schools downloaded immediately.

@MotherOfDragons Many schools has a decline option on their response form. Otherwise, a deposit isn’t submitted by May 1 and that’s that. Has your daughter committed to Bama?

@srk2017 I have nit seen the actual CA midyear report form - are formal mid-year transcripts attached to it?

@MotherOfDragons We found with D14 it was easier to notify other schools to stop the increasingly frequent notifications about room selection, orientation, deposits, etc. Hers were all public state universities, so she could log in to a couple of portals and hit a “no thanks” button. I think she ended up emailing one admission office. We haven’t quite got to 100% certainty with S yet, but I’m going to encourage him to do the same when we have. Even though he doesn’t go through his emails enough to be bothered by the influx, it seems somehow like the right thing to do.

That is crazy about the cost and no-repeat rule for grad gowns! What do the kids with fewer resources do? Even if it’s a private HS, I assume there are a couple of students on scholarships?

@itsgettingreal17 we had to pay the enrollment deposit at UA to get day 1 housing, so technically that’s a yes (although she doesn’t know this because I don’t want to skew her decision making).

Right now it’s about 95% likely that she’ll choose UA unless she wins that external scholarship. If she does, I think her plan is to talk to UA about how to apply it on top of the Presidential and engineering scholarships, and to do the admitted students stuff at WPI, Northeastern and UMD to make sure she’s choosing the best fit for herself if money were no object.

However, the external scholarship is incredibly competitive, so no plans are being made in any direction until we know about that (should be this month).

Oh, hey, I have an unrelated question. What did your kids think about the AP Micro/Macroeconomic class? D18 is picking classes for next year (senior) and when she looks at the class requirements at colleges she likes in her major, they all have micro/macro econ all over the place. My thought was that it might be a good way for her to see if she likes macro/micro econ (they don’t have a non-AP option, though).

H wants to protect her GPA (which was terrible sophomore year with too many AP’s). She would have one other AP course next year-AP Stats, and the rest would be regular classes.

Thoughts?

@CA1543 We haven’t ordered senior pictures yet either gulp but cap and gown (and ring) are already on order. I actually put in for a yearbook ad for D also (after clearing it with her, haha) but still need to cough up the art and they’ve been hassling me for it. So hard to know what to put there!

Re: sexist environments - I just finished taking the course to receive my USCG Master license and it was a class with me and around 25 men for 2 full weekends. Lets just say there was a lot of stuff (comments, “jokes”, etc.) I had to ignore. I mean, I know none of it was serious, and at least most of them genuinely wished me well on my exams, etc. but if I had to work day in and day out in an environment like that class? I’m not sure how I would fare.

Re: post AP with late graduation - we go until the bitter end of June as well. In past years, teachers have done special topics or projects in the month or so after the exam. It seems to vary from teacher to teacher.

@MotherOfDragons My ds wrote an email to each of the schools he is sure he not going to go to and thanked them warmly. He has not figured out where he is going yet as he is still waiting on some admits and scholarships but he has been able to cross a few off his list. He figures that might help other kids from his school who are waiting for decisions from those schools.

Congrats to @carachel2 on committing to UPITT.

On mid-year reports, our counselor uploaded it to Common App back in early Jan. When I checked back in a day or two, all colleges downloaded the report. I am thinking that task is now completed.

Ordered cap and gown a while back, it was inexpensive but only because I resisted buying ANYTHING else.

@MotherOfDragons My D took micro as DE and AP macro. She preferred the AP macro class. It was interesting and well taught.

@CA1543 - All I see is midyear report was submitted to common app and don’t know what’s included.

@MotherOfDragons I think it’s better to respond once you’re sure you are not attending. I’ve been feeling guilty with Rutgers for example. D was accepted into CAS and C of Eng. She is 100% sure she doesn’t want to attend, especially since she has a cheaper option OOS for less money at a uni she prefers. I asked her to keep an open mind and attend the admitted students day for Engineering so we’ve signed up for that. Before she declines I’d like to be 100% sure nothing peaks her interest.

Students on the Rutgers thread have already been wait-listed and they’re really bummed. So I think it’s only fair to notify the school as soon as possible as a spot will open up for someone who might really want to attend.

College counselor at D’s school tells the kids to reply quickly and kindly to the schools they know they won’t be attending, especially if they were offered merit awards.

No cap and gown for her, as her school traditionally does white dresses for graduation. There are a LOT of requirements around the dresses and shoes, and they have to be approved by the dean of students a few weeks prior to graduation, so it may be a challenging shopping expedition… Especially since we are time limited, and D will be away on a concert tour during spring break.
Not doing a yearbook ad… Seems outrageously expensive to me.

@CA1543 GC uploaded the transcript with the mid-year report. The mid-year report has a “Grades Attached” section so the transcript is expected with these reports.

No cap and gown fees here. D is not even attending graduation, which is right before memorial day weekend. She is working at the camp for underprivileged kids that she does every year. She is already no longer attending any classes at the high school, but doing the dual enrollment, and will actually be done by early may.

@dfbdfb congrats on narrowing the list of schools.

@CA1543 that is a great question on transcripts, I just assumed that they were sent by our college counseling office.
Should have son check on that. It would seems the schools do this all the time and know they need to get them to the colleges ASAP.

@carachel2 Huge Congrats on Pitt!

@MotherOfDragons my son is in AP Econ and he loves it at his school it is a one year class micro one semester and macro the other.

@srk2017 @CA1543 If you look under the colleges tab, click on “Recommenders and FERPA” and right under the counselors heading, the PDF of each form is available if you would like to see them.

@paveyourpath - I don’t see an option to see the pdf. Only pdf I can download is the application.

@paveyourpath – thanks I am not seeing a pdf of the midyear report form. It will be nice if the transcript is attached/uploaded as part of that report.
