That’s exactly why you can go all Rambo on the GC!
Depending on how passive aggressive you want to be, write her a note and say “I really appreciate your generous offer to help fund my child’s education, but I just don’t think it would be proper for me to accept.”
@Cubanmom3 I’d be fuming! I hope your daughter didn’t take it in. FWIW, I took the free ride to my state school and then I got free ride offers for grad school - at top 20 schools! The best revenge is zero debt.
Newbie to CC and this thread – Inspiring to read of all the great opportunities coming students way, as well as hear of bumps in the road to brace myself. D17 has applied to bunch of schools, one SCEA (denied), 3 likely letters, 2 acceptances so far. Majority of news still to come. Thanks for such lively thread!
@srk2017@socalmom007 5 UCs for our son too. We figured 3-4 were “likelies”, so we had no true safeties. Made for a bit of a stressful period until the middle of the month.
ok, I’m a few pages behind, but before I catch up, just wanted to let you know that I just booked round trip airfare at the end of august Philly - Paris, returning London to Philly for under $500 per person!!! Anyone considering Europe right now, those flights were on Delta. ROUND TRIP PER PERSON!!!
Thanks for the link @nw2this ! D17 won’t get into Cal though, she’s more a mid tier UC girl B-) We hope anyway, come on Santa Barbara… maybe Davis, Irvine?
THANK YOU CC friends I feel so much better after reading your comments. I actually called the GC and asked her to kindly not make any more “helpful” comments to my D
Congrats to all the wonderful news posted. Behind every college admittance and fabulous MAC there are amazing dedicated parents of this I am sure. Starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel now.
In some ways I feel for these GC’s. They are not financial consultants, nor can they be. They can’t ask (or shouldn’t) and so all they can go on is academics. Which really when you think about it puts them in a horrible position. Darned if they do and darned if they don’t. I don’t know what the right answer is but I do feel for them. It makes me feel better that we had zero recommendations made…our GC’s are far more concerned with getting kids graduated but yeah, if one told my kid that they could do better or were settling I’d go all kind of bat S crazy on them!
@Cubanmom3 --Oh wow. Time for a 1:1 meeting with the GC!! Be calm and cool but show her the financials and the plan. That is a GC who needs to learn there are many different ways to run this race–and debt free is definitely a valid lane in the race!
I’ve found that GCs are great at a lot of things but knowing the financials of the college process is not one of them.
So D17 called at the end of her second (HN)CBHP day, said she was exhausted, and when I asked her how they’d done selling her on the program and Alabama, she said she’d spent the entire day going violently back and forth between “Oh my gosh, this is the most amazing thing ever!” and “Nah, not my thing”.
She liked it well enough that she definitively prefers Alabama over Kansas even without considering the few thousand in price between them after the scholarships they each offered her. (Sorry, Jayhawk fans!) So that’s good, since KU room selection is tomorrow, and so I got to cancel her housing contract today to maximize our refund of their housing deposit.
Anyone giving anything up for Lent? One day to go to Ash Wednesday and I’m still unsure of what I should sacrifice.
I briefly considered giving up CC, but now I’m far too invested in everyone’s individual college drama. March is undoubtedly going to be a pivotal and dramatic month for most of us, and I can’t imagine not knowing how things play out.
I also considered giving up alcohol, but I’m hoping for at least one champagne-cork-popping celebration (if not that then I’m going to need to drown my sorrows!)
I was going to give up CC for Lent (I’m not Catholic, but I like the idea of learning to appreciate something by going without), but someone wisely pointed out that I would miss out on congratulating/hugging all the people who have news during that time, so I’m currently trying to think of something else.
It might be coffee; I just had a cup and I now have a bad case of the shakes. Although I should be able to knock out the powerpoint that I’m procrastinating over in about two seconds… 8-} ~O)
I know @MotherOfDragons has, but has everyone else read the current roommate has a problem with my boyfriend thread o. The college life forum? If not, read it bc it shows just how much roommate situations can impact your student. My Dd would be the detested roommate and would be despising her living environment bc she would leave but she would equally be unlikely to text when returning to her own living space.
We saw closet size private rooms with a Jack and Jill bathroom this past weekend. I just looked and they are only $1300 more per yr. After reading that thread, I am going to talk to Dd about this bc she would be stressed to the max living in that situation. (And goodness, if that student is actually hired as an RA, yikes!)
@Mom2aphysicsgeek I’m sorry but I really think boyfriend/girlfriend activity should not happen in a double/triple dorm room. It makes everyone uncomfortable (except the one person who isn’t paying the bill).
I got home around midnight after our 2600 mi road trip (very, very poor life choice!) I haven’t even had to register the fact that Lent starts tomorrow. I am bone-tired. I need to get a grip on my life! But, I think visits are done and as soon as we see final numbers in the next week or so, decisions will be made!
