Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

FRC & FIRST Anyone having FRC competition this week? If so, Good Luck!
D17s compete in Week 2 & 5, then hopefully will move onto States. However, this weekend, our school is hosting an Underwater Robotics competition, so the kids are volunteering at it, while we are also doing concessions for it.

Alma maters. Nope. None of our kids have applied to either my alma mater or any of my H’s.

They simply wanted different things for their schools and large state schools wasn’t it for 2 out of 3 and the 3rd fell in love elsewhere.

S17 is having some regret that he refused to apply to mine but honestly I think it would have been a terrible fit for him.

@Mom2aphysicsgeek Yes! I read that roommate horror thread. Amazing how self-centered that young lady is. I couldn’t stop reading it the day I stumbled upon it. It was a train wreck and it just kept getting worse.

S17 will have a single dorm room. Since he is an only child, I was really bummed about this because I wanted him to have that roommate bonding experience. Then you read something crazy and at least can feel better about the situation. S17 will have a single dorm because of a medical condition. I am not worried though because he has spent time at summer programs and stayed in the dorms. His first summer at a dorm, was pre-medical condition and he had a roommate. It was a bad experience with a not so nice kid and they spent 3 weeks co-existing without any discussion. Two summers later, and having to live in a single room, he had friends in his room to hang out and study so I know he will be okay from a social perspective.

Congratulations on all of the new scholarship news.

Tomorrow is March…finally…the wait is almost over! Only another 30 days.

Alma maters were a no go for my son. We both went to California State schools which weren’t of interest to him.

Congrats @Cubanmom3 on Wash U I loved it when we went to visit. Good luck with the process

@socalmom007 crazy about SDSU but she has a lot of great options already. I tell you it really is just a crap shoot sometimes :-j

Congrats to anyone I have missed!!

@RightCoaster Yup, UCSB is a gorgeous campus in a beautiful part of the country, California’s Central Coast. Until recently (like, really recently: yesterday) I thought it, and UCSC, were the two UC “party schools” that weren’t hard for a regular kid to get into. There was a thread on this site with seniors who’d applied to UCSB relaying their stats and – wow. It was really eye-opening. Now, my senior got into her ED school, and didn’t apply to ANY universities (LAC kid) but I’d been thinking my D15 would like UCSB. Since she’s a regular kid, though, I guess I have to readjust my expectations.

@socalmom007 It is so strange that she’s gotten into better schools and not that one. It doesn’t seem to be the kind of school to practice yield protection. Who knows what goes on in the minds of adcoms!

No giving up anything for Lent, cuz Jewish, but we get our due during Yom Kippor, the dreaded day of fasting and bitching about fasting.

We’re Muslim, so no Lent, but D is pretty upset that Ramadan starts only two days after her graduation meaning she has to start fasting almost immediately post-graduation. She’s hoping her friends have graduation parties at night, so she’ll actually be able to eat the food. Meanwhile, she still hasn’t told me if she wants her own grad party or not. If it is going to happen I really need to start planning!

@socalmom007 very surprised by the San Diego state result. Thinking it needs to come off of my S19’s list. Then again I think he’s the one kid who may need to commute although I’ve not broken that news to my H yet.

Honestly @JenJenJenJen I don’t think it’s yield protection. I think she reads better at schools that take essays and EC’s, leadership, etc… into account. Her grades and test scores should have been enough for the major she chose at SDSU, so I’m still confused as she is well within their range… but, whatever. It’s fine.

@eandesmom We should arrange it that our two sophomores get into the same schools so we can meet up for burgers and beer, or whatever it was that @itsgettingreal17 @caroldanvers and etc did!

Roommates - One of the big factors that changed DS’s mind about private bath dorms and community bath dorms was the fact that the kids have to clean their own bathrooms in private bath dorms. Imagine 2-4 guys cleaning their own bathroom? I can’t imagine it either so community bath dorm it is!

Congrats to the Wash U scholarship finalists! My D17 did apply to my alma mater and got in with great money, but it’s her backup and I know she won’t end up there. Glad she applied, though!

Are any of your kids going to the Grinnell accepted students weekend this weekend? My D17 is going, but is disappointed that they didn’t have any more overnight slots available (I guess we didn’t sign up quickly enough). Looks like she will have to crash with her dad at the hotel. Grinnell was the only school she applied to that she didn’t visit, so she wants to check it out. Still 8 more to hear from, though.

It’s March 1st! Finally, decision month. It’s going to be a wild ride.

@smcirish – long time since I posted here. D17 has been ill this year but is doing better now…the illness has kept me from posting though. S14 is a student at Grinnell. He and his Dad attended the scholarship weekend in 2014 and it was a very positive experience (he stayed at the hotel too). My D17 was invited this weekend but cannot attend due to an athletic commitment. If you have any specific questions about the school, feel free to PM me. S14 has been very happy there.

@socalmom007 my ds got a rejection from SDSU as well. We were very surprised. It was not really a contender because of OOS pay and farther than I wanted but it was also a school I was sure he would get into with his scores and grades. Guess I’m just glad it was just a " well what if I go to school out in California" things. I’d rather his rejection be there than somewhere he really wanted.

well good morning everyone. Congrats to all that . (BTW i tend to like the posts of all the good news rather than type a message to everyone). We found out last night that D17 is massively failing her required to graduate online personal fitness class because of a misunderstanding of assignments. She currently has an 18! in that class, which she finally figured out how to see work/grades yesterday. All her other classes use icollege and this professor doesnt. She is taking this class from the local college as dual enrollment and yesterday was the last day to drop classes, Even if she did drop it, its a required class to graduate unless you are a Jock. She has PE credit, but apparently “its not the same”. So if she fails this class, she doesnt get her HS diploma, and therefore all acceptances will be rescinded, and so much for college next year. She would have to take it over the summer while working at camp, and hope that maybe she could convince the colleges to still take her in the fall if she gets her diploma.

Right now, as a mom, I am freaking out, and she is also. She had no idea how to fix this. She is trying to reach out and ask for extenstions, etc. She has one other online class she is doing fine in, and two other classes as well. The lesson learned — will never take an online class again. Also she is questioning if she is even smart enough to go to college, etc.

@dolemite and @Cubanmom3 on WashU scholarship finalist results!

@thinmints - sorry to hear of your child’s health problems.

@sdl0625 The PE dilemma sounds super stressful. I would put a call into the instructor and see if your D can get an accommodation to turn in missed assignments due to the technical difficulties she experienced with the interface. Good luck!

@Collegecue my S was waitlisted at SDSU and most likely will be rejected at SLO. I don’t know what this means fo UC chances. It’s dwindling by the second. We’ve narrowed choices down at this point to OOS Universities as we don’t think he’lol get accepted at UCs.

@thinmints so sorry about your D’s illness and glad she is doing better now!

@sdl0625 that is such a bummer! I agree with @mamaedefamilia that she should reach out to the instructor and explain the situation and ask for some leniency and to make up the work. I also think she should tell them she won’t graduate if this doesn’t get corrected. Hopefully that will give them some empathy and they will help her out.
Good Luck!!!

@thinmints Thanks for your response! Was Grinnell your D14’s first choice before he went for the scholarship weekend? Or did the weekend sell him on Grinnell? What is his major, and what has he liked best about Grinnell?

Thanks!
