Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@cleoforshort I’m sure it isn’t much different than other big state schools. Like you said, it’s what the school values.
In general, I just think it’s too bad that academic pursuits are not celebrated or supported as publicly as athletics. (and I have athletes too, including my D17 who is a national-qualifying competitor and looking at D3).

@WhataProcess You should follow UConn on Facebook and you will see that pursuits other than Athletics are very much valued. Most of the update emails I receive from them are about research etc…

My D also received the Academic Excellence Scholarship of $6500.00 and an invitation to the Honors Scholars program at UCONN. So proud of her! We are celebrating anything and everything these days as we know that it’s likely a lot of denials and wait lists are in store later this month.

cost of attendance, in state:
UNC, $25,000
UVA, $30,000
UMich, $29,000

UCONN at $32,000 seems less desirable when you factor in that it’s in Storrs, Ct and it’s less well-known than some competing in-state flagships. But UCONN also has no real in-state competition for its students so I guess that commands a premium.

@nocturne21 My D also received that package and we are very happy! We are celebrating, why not? UConn is a quality school on a beautiful campus! Congrats to your daughter!

UC(al)s are above $32K, but that shouldn’t surprise anyone

Thanks, @cleoforshort! Congrats to your D as well!!

@srk2017 If you waive the health insurance and use your own, the estimated UC costs will usually be under $32K.

That was an interesting read @rightcoaster. Thanks for sharing it with us.

We are so not a sports family, and it definitely shows. Earlier today I had a huge laugh. Remember the “despite 2013” comment thinking it was about my ds? Not at all. In 2013 Bama beat ND in the national championship game! Now, that is funny! Context is everything!

I’m a big sports fan and I had to think hard about this year’s Super Bowl today to figure out something I read, let alone have any clue what happened in a college game 4 years ago.

@Mom2aphysicsgeek Lol, that is so funny about the sports. I didn’t even think of sports when you mentioned this before. Football, right? I don’t even know that for sure. I think some college sports don’t have a “national championship.”

Does UConn still give full tuition to in-state nmf?

Interesting article, @rightcoaster, and a very candid look at the process. A word of caution about BU merit aid, although you are all so savvy you may already be aware, BU is known for frontloading freshmen aid with grants which are not automatically renewed. If it isn’t a scholarship then you can’t count on it in subsequent years, and if they say differently then be sure to have it in writing. (I’m an alum/master’s degree so I don’t hate the school, just have had a couple of friends experience this with their kids and one ended up having to take out loans to make up the difference.)

Congrats on all UConn news! UConn instate is 32K? Is that one of the highest priced in state rates? I haven’t looked into too many state schools.

Good warning @jmek15 !

I am amazed how many emails son17 still get trying to get an application from him.

Went to a meeting at our house school today where they talked about dropping Class Rank from being sent to schools. They did some research and almost all of the top public HS have stopped using class rank. I guess our school was 1 out of 25 that still uses it.Colleges have basically old them to drop it. Figures, it has probably worked against Son17 and now they are going to get rid of it where son19 would’ve benefited from in. LOL. Oh well, whatever at this point.

We (this group) seem to be in the lull before the storm for the most part. Probably another week or two before it starts getting crazy again.

We are in a lull. Then it all hits the fan starting on the 11th for son17 and ending 3/18.

The only thing he has to deal with at the moment is dealing with a coach that is looking for him to officially accept their offer, and son17 is in stall mode until he sees the rest of his results. It’s just awkward at this point. I’m not sure what the best advice I can give son.

So, holding pattern until next Saturday, and they we should get 4 decisions in 1 week and be closer to decision. 2 more weeks!!

@RightCoaster - Our school also stopped ranking 3 years back after seeing no to so great admissions. Ours is a very competitive school which draws kids from all over our metro. I am not sure what they report in lieu of rank.

@RightCoaster We are in a lull too. I wish we had all of the cards on the table so we could move on to the next phase!

I have a QOTD
How do you feel about your kids rooming with their friends? Both of my kids have had some friends ask them to room with them if they end up at the same school. I’m not sure if it is a good idea or not.
My son’s friend is in the Engineering School so they won’t really have too many classes together. We certainly like the friend and I think it would work out well.
My daughters friend’s I’m not so sure about lol! It seems like they bicker too much and more than once my daughter said she is ready for new friends.

Anybody have any thoughts on this?

@twoforone99 IMO, it’s better to be in the same dorm or otherwise close by with friends from home than sharing a room. There’s all kinds of stress in learning to share a small space with another person, no matter how much you like them otherwise. (Maybe you’re different, but it was hard to live in an apartment with my soon-to-be H even when I liked the guy enough to marry him.) Why damage a good friendship? The friends can still do stuff together without living in each other’s hip pocket. When I was going off to college with one of my best friends from HS, she wanted to room together. I blamed my parents for insisting on a random roommate, and I’d be willing to take the blame for one of my kids if they needed an excuse.

ETA: I also feel like college is a time to explore who you are without the influence of lifelong friends. Will your kids be willing to make new friends and explore new interests if they have their HS friends to fall back on socially? That depends on the kids, for certain, so I’m not implying yours won’t.
