Congrats!!! @nw2this Hugs to those who did not get good news.
Been lurking here a bit, wanted to say congrats to all who were accepted at MIT, that is quite the accomplishment! If you didn’t get in, isn’t it the most competitive school in the country? There and Stanford? But you must be pretty smart to have even applied so that’s pretty great! Funny they tell you on pi day, so very MITish, lol.
Speaking of pi/pie, I will always choose a pumpkin and prefer the crust to whatever’s inside!
My D will be going to Univ of Richmond in the fall, she’s very excited but it’s been an emotional journey. Had no idea college apps would be this stressful! She applied to William & Mary ED & was denied, it devestated her as she had no other schools she loved. We had recently learned about UR & she became very excited about it, applied ED2 and was accepted. A bit surprised as their scores (middle 50%) were higher than W&M but she has a high gpa & wrote a great essay. I guess the public vs private thing helped. She also got in Roanoke College & our in state College of Charleston. Waiting to hear RD applications but now she needs to w/draw those, frustrating not to know where she would have gotten in!
No snow here but record cold, was 80 last week, all the flowers are blooming!
Congrats to those accepted to MIT, amazing!!! Hugs to those denied, but it sounds like your kids have excellent options.
Well, beware the ides of March indeed. D17 was just waitlisted to UC Santa Cruz. It wasn’t on the table and more as she was accepted to Cal Poly, but this pretty much tanks her hopes for Irvine or Santa Barbara. The mid tier UC’s are insane this year. Santa Cruz and Davis’ acceptance rates dropped by 10%.
Wow, congrats on MIT, @SincererLove and @nw2this!!! I guess that swim coach’s note was indeed meant to send a happy message!
Crud @socalmom007 , hope things work out for the other 2.
@nw2this congrats @nw2this on MIT acceptance! Yay!
welcome @cloudysmom ! Congrats on U of Richmond. Beautiful school, I like I there a lot.
Regarding MIT… sorry to hear a few kids in here did not get in. Bummer. They are super smart kids and will certainly thrive and succeed at another place. I’m certain of this.
For those of you who have kids with MIT acceptances do you think you could explain why you thought your kids got accepted, aside from great grades/test scores? I’m just curious, not trying to be nosy. MIT seems to admit a wide variety of types of kids, it’s hard to pinpoint what “type” of kid gets accepted there.
Oh, and never even occurred to me to have D14 use a safety rail on her partially-lofted bed … but you all now have me worried! If S used one, sheets really would never get changed.
My 2 cents on the bed loft thing. My D attended a NIAHD History program last summer at William & Mary and lived in the dorms for 3 wks. Most of the beds were already lofted but they used these white, conical things made specifically for lofting. The school said they were the safest. D said the kids all dove on their beds, etc and no one broke or moved or anything. I was a little concerned when I dropped her off. Univ of RIchmond says it can be lofted but with cinder blocks. Not sure I like that as the beds could come off. These little things W&M used actually had a spot for the feet of the bed to fit down inside, like a stilt almost. No way for it to come out of it. I am wondering about trying to find them somewhere…
@cloudysmom I don’t think the rail concern is related to the strength of the loft. It’s more about students falling out and hurting themselves.
Oh ok, she never said anything about that happening. I should think if one doesn’t fall out now, they wouldn’t fall out if it’s a bit higher, when we sleep we have all learned not to fall out. Not sure exactly how we learn that, lol, but would think as you sleep the sense of space is the same?
Congrats on the MIT admits. Great admits…
Good wishes to those not as lucky.
As we approach what will be a busy few weeks of acceptances and hopefully few rejections, I expect this forum to light up even more. I will try to limit my shout outs, as to reduce the data footprint. But know, I share all your joys and sorrows.
Fingers crossed for all…
@cloudysmom – there is a whole thread on CC somewhere about kids who have fallen out of lofted beds and sustained serious TBI (traumatic brain injury) requiring extensive leaves from school and also neuro rehabilitation.
When I first read it I was kind of rolling my eyes but these are serious life changing injuries. If the bed is going to be lofted really high I would take some simple precautions.
^^^ Well said, @BigPapiofthree! :)>-
@BigPapiofthree thanks for the well wishes, I appreciate. Son17 has a crazy 3 days coming up. And then it’s done.
I’m also hoping for the best with people who have kids still waiting on final results!!!
@carachel2 Wow - I had no idea and very surprised to hear it! Thanks for educating me!
Re: Lofted beds -
There was a CC mom a while back whose son sustained a traumatic brain injury from falling out of a lofted bed. TBIs are no joke – my brother has been permanently incapacitated by one.
@cloudysmom - not saying this will happy to your – or anyone here’s – DCs, but let’s not forget that a combination of general college freshman stupidity, alcohol, and other factors could result in losing one’s proprioceptive abilities.
No way would I let a lofted bed not have rails.

And fingers crossed to all in the coming days!
I am a CA resident and have got into UCR CS while Cal Poly SLO into my 2nd choice of Engineering, I want to major in CS but I am confused if I should play safe and go UCR then try to transfer to UCSD or go to Cal Poly and try to transfer to CS after first quarter. Please help with your opinion, any insight would really help me decide. Thank you in advance.
D17 accepted today at UMass Amherst–our best financial option and possibly her best academic choice. She has one remaining decision due to come out on Friday–at a small LAC (Denison). I think it will likely come down to those two schools. She’ll need to decide whether she wants the small school or the large school experience. If she gets the merit the NPC calculated, Denison will be doable, but UMass is by far the cheapest of all her options and will allow her (and us) a little breathing room financially. One more to go and then it’s time to get real!
@klinska my son was out at UMass over the weekend and he as always thought it might be too big and rowdy for him, but after being there for a bit he realized maybe it would be OK after all. The kids got to check out a few things around the school and he left with a positive impression. Maybe your D can make another trip out there to get a better feeling? Good luck with your choices, look forward to seeing where she picks.
@klinska Congrats to your D! I actually went to UMASS, it was a million years ago but I loved it!
