Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

Thanks @NolaCAR for the info! It seemed odd, but I can understand we may get more info in the coming days.

@NolaCAR - Congrats on the big decision! I know a young man who is a junior at Willamette. He has really thrived there!

@SincererLove NU officially stands for both Northeastern and for Northwestern. Northeastern results came out this week so that’s what most folks are referring to this week! Sometimes to make it easier NEU is the old acronym for Northeastern so that helps, but it is an older acronym. So, sometimes context clues or just remembering previous conversations, or sometimes, you just have to ask! (kind of like USC and USC)

Congrats @NolaCAR on making a decision! I’m jealous–we are still waiting on 6 more. I’m ready for my D to be done!

@SincererLove, Glad to hear that D is enjoying Vandy. Is she there for scholarship interview, or another event? A report on her return would be great to hear. Thanks

@vandyeyes Sounds like U Chicago gives the best swag!

@WhataProcess Congrats on your son’s acceptances and how stressful for your daughter! Are they very competitive? I hope something great comes through for her next week to ease the pressure!!

@MotherOfDragons that’s cool about the swag! love “bama mama!” I got some stuff too mostly mugs with mom, dad, uncle; and of course for D a sweatshirt, some pencils and a fun mug - she likes it all and the shirt is a conversation starter.

@thermom congrats on the awesome acceptances! <:-P I do hope you get mac at the others too!!

@Dave_N great news on BU, congrats! I do wish we could have given up spots to friends we knew!!

@NolaCAR Oh, I’m so happy for your daughter that a decision has been made! Congrats!

Thank you for all of the wonderful support for S17’s acceptance. Congrats to all on the good news today and it’s a resilient group of kids here so I know those with disappointing news will dust themselves off and move on. Amazing children you all have.

@JenJenJenJen and @vandyeyes - D had never gotten much/any swag from Chicago…they were never much of a stalker school. There were a couple of mailings, but no t-shirts, glasses, scarves…nada.

Just a very nice acceptance with a small amount of merit, now supplemented with a bit of FA

Congrats to all of the BU, Fordham, NE, NW, UCLA, Case, etc., etc. acceptances and hugs for the waitlists and rejections…Mudd, et. al.'s loss.

I am finding some of these results a bit confusing…getting into MIT but waitlisted at WashU? Getting into Vandy but not case?!? Makes no sense!

Congrats on all the good news and hugs for all these not so good news.

My D was accepted to BU with a Tuition Exchange scholarship. No honors college. I almost fell like BU doesn’t think she’ll ever come so didn’t bother to entice her.

@BigPapiofthree - Jumping in answering for @SincererLove … Her D is attending MOSAIC – Vandy’s overnight visitation program for Chancellor’s Scholars and multicultural recruitment. My D was supposed to go, but it conflicted with Davidson’s Belk Scholarship weekend…We too are very much looking forward to a full report!!!

In the meantime, D’s return from Davidson is has been a bit challenging…She is experiencing her first travel snafu on her own…she got held up in security, making her miss her flight. She was put on a later flight with a connection that had a late takeoff, so we’re on tenterhooks waiting to see if she makes her connecting flight…aaarrrrgh.

@LoveTheBard …trade ya all the swag for your merit$! Deal?

WashU is very very protective of anticipated yield…our school has a highly sought after student who is in at Princeton (scea) and out at WashU, while others were accepted; if the most highly qualified student didn’t visit or fill out merit scholarship application opportunities, then that’s communicating (negatively) for the school.

Similarly CWRU knows very well (from years of seeing it play out) that a highly qualified student like @srk2017 S17, who they are passing on for their MD/BS program, is not likely going to bite on the school otherwise. Again yield protection.

@vandyeyes - lol!

@NolaCar Yes on IR and IB.

@hscounselor2 I had not heard of Banner. For a student with $0 FAFSA EFC, the UW grant $$ = $8800. The rest of the FA package is standard federal Pell grant, loans, work study, and gapped cost. A family with a $0 EFC is expected to pay around $36,000. It looks like their institutional grant $$ stops at $13000 EFC and standard federal loans are all that is offered.

@5redheads you need to contact the school directly and ask what it is they mean by certified diploma. It might be as simple as a notarized diploma. If they are asking for a diploma that has been certified by an accredited agency, then no, I know that I could not provide one. I have never been asked for a diploma for my kids before. Final transcript, yes, but not a diploma. I issue a transcript with words final transcript with a subscript stating the state code for the state law under which our school operated.

Congrats to all the families receiving good news. Best wishes to all of your kids who are struggling with not so good news. It is so hard for them not to take the rejections personally. I hope when all the dust settles that everyone has at least 1 good affordable option. They can only attend 1 school. They just need that 1!

Time is racing by. Our college student was home for spring break and left yesterday to go back. It was rough on me bc I know next yr is coming fast. My goal for the rest of this school yr is to stop thinking about next yr’s and enjoy the last few weeks,of this one.

@Dave_N and others who have offered their spot at BU thanks!
We’re over it! It was low on my personal fave list, so sort of happy to eliminate a choice. I also have an irrational fear of son getting run over by the T or hit by a car while going to school there, lol.
My wife was steamed though, she’s a multi varsity sport alum, and figured son would probably get in, he had at least average stats for the school. Oh well.
Definitely relieved to be done with this process. Son is going to be considering his choices this week.

At this point my biggest concern is housing. I am struggling to find out answers to where students live for 2nd year and beyond at schools with limited housing. Also I’m not too keen on triples in dorm rooms that were made for doubles. Schools seem to downplay the existence of triples but we are shown one on tour so they are a possibility.

I have asked at several schools but don’t think I have received any good answers, they are all vague about the choices and indicate that it is cheaper off campus. I realize most schools offer off campus housing departments but the aren’t accessible to prospective students. Plus if they have to move off campus then do they need a car? I’m not planning on sending a car to school. I’m starting to really like schools that have housing for all four years.

@Mom2aphysicsgeek It’s probably too late in the process but have you looked at U of South Carolina? D has a classmate who’s headed there for IB and I hear their IB program is #1.

@LoveTheBard , hope D got home OK.

@BigPapiofthree @LoveTheBard , D came back yesterday afternoon, and raved about Vandy and has swags to show too. She was selected as Chancellor scholar (non-URM, so I think it is mostly due to her volunteer work)

She was picked up by two admission counselors at the airport and went to bowling with them and other kids who arrived earlier. Her host and roommates are also very nice to her, and included her in their friend group. The cafeteria is great with lots of options and price by item (which may help prevent “freshman 15”?). I believed she went to scheduled programs and classes. She felt that all the people she met were more outgoing than her which brings her to be more outgoing. They had a breakfast for all Chancellor scholars. The last night, they had a dance in a club, she had a lot of fun, and said she that might be her prom…she came back with more friends and friend groups in social media !!

It was a really beautiful campus, and every student she talked to there were honest about the school and were genuinely happy to be at Vandy. When she sat in on her host’s class, she loved the amount of discussion and that she felt included as well. Coming in, she was afraid that there would be a southern culture, but most of the kids are actually from the north and the most southern it was was that the people said y’all. There were some students that obviously came from wealth-- host’s friend was from a rival school of Malia Obama’s and they played tennis against each other. But it seemed like there was a good bit of diversity, and D really enjoyed a Vandy showcase where a bunch of groups performed (kpop groups, aca pella groups, etc.)

The only cons she heard were the career office and greek life. For some majors, internship is very easy, CS, engineering etc. But for other majors, you might have to hassle yourself to get internship before junior year. While she felt that there was no pressure to drink or party, she felt like Greek culture was still pretty major on Vandy. However, the students she talked to have said that Vandy is trying to remove Greek life/push them off campus. A lot of the partying frats are actually on probation.

To early to decide for us, DH keeps reminding her of her CPW weekend at MIT early April.

@SincererLove I’m really fascinated to see where your D clicks better because Vandy and MIT are so different in terms of culture. Both are filled with superbright kids, but the similarity ends there, I think!

For sure, Vandy is night and day from MIT. Looking forward to seeing what she decides.

@twoforone99 The school my D has chosen BU guarantees housing all 4 years she is on campus. The cost for for an incoming freshman is $10,000 a year. You could be in a Quad for this price and the dorm has standerd comunal bathrooms. They do offer nicer housing but it cost more.

Since she will be living in a big city a palne ride way the 4 year option is nice. No need for appartment hunting and the logistics of furnishing it. Our in state saftey only guarantees housing to freshman so I understand your concern. Do any of the schools have a parent FB page you ask about off campus housing?

I am currently working on the logistics of getting Ds dorm room stuff to college for move in day. She is working on the roomate search!
