Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

S should be just finishing up his interview for a summer job about now and heading back to school so he can check in in time to be allowed to board the bus for a soccer game. I never had to juggle so much in HS. Next year will be better, right?

lol @mtrosemom

@MSHopeful I am going by what is on this list, of the 7 schools on our working list that use CSS, only 3 show as requiring the NCP form according to this.

I’ve been thinking about how I can get D more connected with what is going on in the real world once she is done with school. I wish she read a newspaper or blog or something that discussed current events. Assuming she will be doing some interviews sometime in the coming months it can’t hurt to know what’s going on in the world. Plus, it gives me something else to fixate on. Any suggestions?

On this topic, this came across fake kid’s Twitter feed. I haven’t read all the stories, but plan to share with D. It looks like an interesting set of articles: http://learning.blogs.nytimes.com/2016/05/05/18-new-york-times-articles-you-should-read-before-you-turn-18/

@Mom2aphysicsgeek, that is a really unique award! Congrats to your D. @jedwards70, you probably know this, but Chapman is very small, so might not be of interest if your S wants a big school. But kids can change their minds, so it’s good to think broadly at this point. I’m happy my D seems to be somewhat flexible and not counting on one school. There are a lot of schools in the area she wishes to go (LA to San Diego). We’re thinking her Solid/Likely/Earth (love the renaming of safety, by the way) school is San Diego State. Although it has a ~35% acceptance rate, it admits based on a formula (no essays), so she should be admitted. Hopefully, I’m not wrong on this advice to her. She liked the campus and said she would be happy to attend. She’s a glass half full kind of kid, so I know she’ll do well wherever she goes! Ooh, good idea @2muchquan . My D’s idea of current events is what is the latest chocolate/peanut butter dessert recipe she can find! (it’s shocking how many there are actually).

@eandesmom That’s a great list, I’ve never seen it before. I guess I just lucked out (NOT) that only one of her CSS schools doesn’t require NCP info. LoL.

LOL @MSHopeful it’s one less waiver to ask for at least, right? I have to admit, part of me could see dropping the 3 that do need it…just so we can avoid that entirely. Problem is, 1 of those 3 is a really solid match and the other one is the dream school (supernova on the chances though). But who knows, maybe they will fall off on their own.

Congratulations @Mom2aphysicsgeek!

As usual, I am hopelessly behind in this thread.

@itsgettingreal17: I guess I should have explicitly limited what I said to schools that offer both fields she’s interested in (plus have at least a minor in gender studies, which she doesn’t plan on taking but likes that it’s there). The really spectacular NM-scholarship schools don’t generally offer that combination, it turns out.

@Gator88NE @eandesmom @jedwards70 Yup, the same conversation here.

I ask, Do you want to major in Science or Engineering?

DS, w/o looking up, I’m going to work for [a fast food chain.] What do I need a degree for?

Me: Well, you can work there after college. Which one do you want to major in?

DS: Hmm, which one will be more useful? (Science) Making fast food more interesting? (Engineering) Or making fast food faster?

:)) :((

Busy day today parents!!! Here we go…

@Agentninetynine my kid is stuck on one school too. Like @RightCoaster it will be full pay but maybe she will get some merit (one can always hope). The acceptance rate at her choice is 11% and being the average smart white Jewish kid with no hook doesn’t help. Oh well

@Mom2aphysicsgeek congrats!!! ^:)^ your kid is amazing

Thank you to those congrats about my D being a NMS. It was a pleasant surprise after being rejected from all the ivies. Again, average white smart girl. @OHToCollege I was talking about my D16 who is currently a senior and they just announced the scholars on May 11th.

@MotherOfDragons my D is also taking both ACT and SAT next month. No NM for her…she messed up the no calculator portion (she’s in AP calc and she forgot how to multiply 2 digit numbers!!!) Funny how dependent you become on a calculator. She knows all the basics now, Lesson learned. I feel ya @dfbdfb Like @rightcoaster surprised my D wanted to take them both she doesn’t even know her score from the school day SAT from April. (I think we find out next Tuesday)

@greeny8 since I am not well versed in NMS/NMF/NMSF, how does that work with the schools? It seems NMF have scholarship opportunities for being a finalist, yes? And then the NMS receive additional based on moving from “F” to “S”? But, the scholarships originally are for the “F” designation from the college as part of their package and then the “S” part is from the NMSC directly? Do schools then potentially offer more as well?

I realize this is an idiotic question but would love to know how it works.

What an amazing accomplishment!

@eandesmom I’m sure someone will answer before I hit “Post”, but the ‘S’ and ‘SF’ is for Semifinalist, and the ‘F’ is for Finalist. Practically all SF become F, unless they don’t wish to fill out the paperwork (some don’t care if they are only going to an ‘elite’ school, and $2K (or $0) doesn’t matter to them), or don’t get a confirming SAT score, or some of the other small hoops they must jump through. ‘S’ could also be for ‘Scholar’…but now I’m getting a little muddy on the meaning, something about having actually received a scholarship from NMC, perhaps? I think you have to be an NMF to be an NMScholar?

@eandesmom you already know it all! As long as you are a finalist and you designate that school (if they are a part of the NMSC) you should receive something. The S award is a separate amount that is awarded directly from NMSC and will be deposited directly to the college of choice (even if the college isn’t listed, they will send the money to that institution). But, I am not sure if they will stack the awards, it may depend on the college. So my D was offered by the state of Florida a full ride just for being an NMF, and then she won the 2500. I think they will deduct the 2500 from the COA. Bummer. I am happy to answer any more questions if I can be of help.

Edit @2muchquan SF semifinalist, F finalist, S scholar. You need to make it to finalist to then go the award of scholar

Oops, forgot to congratulate your D16, @greeny8! It is hard to keep up with this quick moving thread. I just received an email ALERT from our local Patch about a student receiving one of the NM Scholarships. The other recent alerts were for a big accident and the listeria food outbreak, so I usually associate them with negative news; good news is nice, but it kind of made me chuckle that it was an ALERT! It’s not a student from our HS but a neighboring private school. Anyway, good for your D!!

Actually, I shouldn’t say listeria “outbreak”, just the possibly contaminated food recall.

You are all so nice congratulating my D, when I was really just telling the story of having your kid embarrassed by the hoopla of administrators. Lol. Thank you!!!

I thought that if you received a NMC scholarship, corporate scholarship, or school-based scholarship you were considered a scholar. My D15 receives $1500/year from her selected college as NM scholarship. I believe that makes her a NM Scholar.

@mtrosemom yes, you are a scholar 3 ways. One corporate, one by college and one by the one time $2500 from NMSC. It is confusing! I still don’t get the college one

Can’t remember who was asking about screenwriting programs but Chapman does have a film school, called Dodge, which is highly selective. Chapman itself is not, but the program is very popular so it’s difficult to gain admission. Doesn’t hurt to check it out. https://www.chapman.edu/dodge/

The end of junior year is emotionally charged, whether our dcs admitted or not. They are almost officially seniors and now they have to think about their future and what that means. Add in the pressure from testing and score comparing and it’s overload.
