Maybe this “test case” class will get the benefit of the doubt and get a more liberal application of the new scores (we can only hope). I am still nagging S to study for the June SAT. I want him to get a score that is similar to his PSAT score. His ACT score was good, but he could have done better IF HE STUDIED!! :-@
@mtrosemom Most colleges will have a lot of data regarding the new SAT since there will be 3 spring administrations of the SAT for rolling admissions schools, and then the fall administrations at least for all other schools. They should be able to get a better handle on the scores.
Interestingly, at least from scores posted on CC (D only knows scores of 2 close friends…they just don’t discuss it), the scores of the better students seem to cluster around 1300’s - 1400’s with not very many 1500’s and I have yet to hear of a single perfect score, which is unusual. The SAT scores also seem to match up very well with the PSAT scores.
@srk2017 Hee!
@mtrosemom We can hope! My D actually decided to skip the SAT since NM is not in play and she likes the ACT format better. She figured she’d gotten enough with the (erratically scored lol) new ACT essay and the APs. She’s really hoping the June subject tests and ACT will be the end of her standardized testing. Fingers crossed!
FYI: Suite/Apartment style dorms (which is how many honor dorms are setup), are much less social (quieter) than old fashion dorms (with one shared restroom per floor).
@itsgettingreal17 Regarding sat scores, that is what my son is reporting. He heard of more scores today, up to 20 kids who are all taking honors/ap level classes. One kid got a 1400. 3 kids in lower 1300’s including my son, and the rest mostly 1200’s. I’m not sure of any lower scores than 1200, my son couldn’t remember any.
So that’s a small sampling of a decent suburban public high school in the Boston area of 20 kids.
Most of the kids plan on taking it again in June.
I don’t have a lot of ACT data from those kids to compare the new sat score with, but my son’s March ACT score is better by a little bit than his new SAT score.
Don’t think NM is in play for us, either. D is planning on taking SAT II Physics in October. Anyone know the last sitting of the SAT I you can take to safely get confirming scores back in time for NM? This would only be if somehow Testmasters, etc. estimates are correct…we are on the low end of the estimate. Hoping November date would still be OK if necessary.
@2muchquan I believe it is the October test.
I don’t think son17 is going to take any SAT subject tests. He is really interested only in business. His math scores and grades are decent, not off the chart. I doubt he’d receive a super high score, so why should he take it? It doesn’t seem like any of of the schools he is looking at require them.
I will have to learn more about them with son19 who is going the engineering route.
All universities in the State University System (SUS) of Florida have made the essay optional for the class of 2017. Each university will make their own announcement by fall. A representative form the SUS announced the policy change at our HS college fair in Spring. He made it sound as though the state of Florida was not alone in their unhappiness with the essay portion of standardized testing.
He also expressed a displeasure with “all the changes in standardized testing” and that universities in the state system will be evaluating how they access applicants who have taken the new SAT and release a statement if necessary in the Fall.
Bottom line, I think we will see universities react to the changed made by the CB when the application process starts in Fall.
Here’s what I found for taking the confirming SAT score (I found several versions with the same info):
So, if by chance D makes it to NMSF, it looks like she’ll have time take the November test.
We are planning for November or December SAT if DS becomes NMSF. don’t want to take the risk of lower score for early application deadlines (11/01 or 12/01).
Yes, November SAT should be fine. People on other threads were suggesting November test. Theoretically, December test should work too, but knowing CollegeBoard, you wouldn’t want to risk unexpected score delays, etc, that can mess up things.
Since we have abnormally high nerdiness in this thread, here’s a link that turned up on my FB feed. Enjoy!
“Here’s How to Teach Yourself Physics and Math”

I’m enjoying the last part of the page on CrackPots who pester many colleagues. =))
@2muchquan – I see this online:“Take the SAT® and earn scores that confirm your 2014 PSAT/NMSQT performance. You must take (or have taken) a national administration of the SAT between October 2013 and December 2015.”
https://www.depts.ttu.edu/admissions/NationalMerit/NMLeaflet.pdf
So – seems like December should be ok to tale SAT to confirm for NM. My DS won’t take it unless he gets NMSF - hanging on by a thread in NY so not really focused on it.
My D says there is not as much excitement around the SAT scores as there was with the PSAT. She heard from several friends that they we disappointed with their scores, especially the percentile.
However her BF -a freak of nature- went from a 1490 PSAT to 1540 SAT. She may be the only one at my D’s school over 1500, I am a little surprised her score was not higher.
@payn4ward I am not going to even bother opening your link. My brain would explode. I am probably the only parent in this group that detests math and I’m only mildly interested in some types of science.
I just read that one of my neighbors kids is a National Merit winner this year.
@RightCoaster, You are not alone. Here is another mathematically challenged parent. My mini-me D17 got 36 ACT Reading and 23 Math.
@rightcoaster No, I’m right there with you. I stink at math past alg 2 and I really don’t care much for science, either. I am a huge literature fan, though.
Love science. Hate math. I love to write though and have always done well in English and writing.
Thank goodness for H who has been the engineering math guru in the house for years.
@HiToWaMom - Wow, what a difference between Reading and Math! I hope she can improve the score quickly.
