Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

Late, but thought I’d throw in D’s school’s CWRU info for those interested…

2016 5/3/0
2015 4/3/1
2014 1/0/0
Nothing before that until 2011, which was 1/1/1
Avg.GPA is 4.23, avg. SAT is 1980/1387, 31 ACT (Our GPA’s run lower than most schools as its calculated on a point by point scale (e.g., a 4.0 requires a 100 in the class).

Oh, and we can’t edit Naviance.

Congrats to those whose children have completed their junior year - that must feel great & congrats to @dfbdfb’s DD
4.0 unweighted!! way to go. My DS still has a couple of concerts, NHS induction, finals through mid-June (boo) and a few post-AP exam projects too. And of course June SAT Math 2.

We went to a college program last night - featured info from reps at Columbia, Brown, Rice, U Chicago & Cornell. Large turnout. I think it was helpful for my DS to hear a little of the differences bt open curriculum at Brown but no majors (they have concentrations) and a few touting their “core” and/or middle of the road flexibility. Also one rep told the students to step up and take the lead on the process of college visits and apps - glad he was there it hear that. I hope this summer - no major structured program - will be a turning point for him to really investigate colleges and dig into the college list I have put together - need to emphasize finding safety schools he’d really like - too many reaches right now I fear - and go visit them, show interest etc. Likely no ED school but a few EAs — GA Tech deadline might be earliest at Oct. 15.

@itsgettingreal17 – time mgt issues here too as well as episodes of stress, boredom & ECs that interfere (hard time with prioritization sometimes). I think if they start to recognize they can impact their future in many ways more than their parents can and if they have ambitions and enjoy leaning, that helps. Still transition will be rough for my DS - glad he has another year to continue to mature. Will apply to schools that provide some accommodations along with very strong academic programs!

@MotherOfDragons: Glad to see somebody picked up on the SOS! I had a chuckle when I realized what I’d (unintentionally, at least initially) done.

I also didn’t realize that you could ignore someone on CC. I know you can on FB.

S was one of those kids who kind of messed up on the easy math on the ACT. He didn’t crack the very large ACT book I bought him and have since gifted to another kid at his school. He’s through Calc 2 now with As, so I know he has the ability. It just was so long ago. The SAT for Math 2 is easier for kids in advanced math than the regular math on the SAT is.

Welcome @novicemom23kids My dd is very similar in that she is constantly checking costs for all of the different options. The good news for your dd is that she wont need an essay for Bama (the honors essay is really just a formality). If she wants to try for CBH or Fellows, those do require essays, but just regular admissions does not.

@thermom My older kids didn’t really start focusing on college admissions until the summer after their jr yr. Their jr yr they took standardized tests but that was about the extent of their seriousness. Over the summer they really started looking (or in terms of my current college student, it wasn’t really until the end of summer when he got home from camp.)

My dd has watched the process with her older siblings and especially her older brother who just went through this a 3 yrs ago. The 2 of them are really close, so I know lots of conversations were going on back then. The fact that Russian is not offered as a a major at a lot of schools really pushed her to be engaged early on. She is a very motivated young lady and she has goals she wants to achieve. She has been researching programs since last yr and we started our college visits in Sept.

@2muchquan I have never heard of zeemee. I tried to open the video on the main page and my ipad was having problems. Is it something your dd is considering?

@dfbdfb , Congratulations on your D’s 4.0!! That is awesome in junior year! My D has a slightly downward trend…
I hope she will pull off 3.8.

@Dave_N , I was surprised that Boston hotels were the most expensive when my D and I took a trip during spring break to Philadelphia, NYC and Boston.

Congrats to your daughter! @dfbdfb We have two more days of finals here and then the grades don’t come out for a couple of weeks! An A at D17’s school starts at 93% and an A+ at 98.5-99% We shall see…

Do A- & A+ have different score values @ schools. For us no difference.

D’s school doesn’t do letter grades at all. It’s numbers only. And every point really counts since a 100 is a 4.0, a 99 is 3.95, etc. D is taking a few optional finals to try to raise her grade in the class just 1 point (which, as you can imagine, is quite difficult at the end of the semester…she will need a 99 or 100 on the final).

Our school grades like this (no A+):
Grade/Percent
A/ 93-100
A-/ 90-92
B+/ 87-89
B/ 83-86
B-/ 80-82 etc.

@Mom2aphysicsgeek I showed Zeemee briefly to D, and made her an account. I think she’ll do it. She loves putting things like that together. Kind of artsy. Plus, she will have 3 piano audition supplements that she can add right off the bat.

Is anyone applying to Tulane? Got a mailing today regarding their addition of Early Decision this year. We won’t be do ED, but it’s on the WBOD for now. Just an FYI in case someone missed the announcement on the Tulane thread.

^^Tulane got rid of its CS department a few years ago and then brought it back, which made me meh about recommending it to D despite the awesome merit aid. DH does not like it because of its proximity to New Orleans (which we grownups love lol), and the perceived party atmosphere of the school. If she puts it in the BOD I think we’d need to take a trip to it to rule it out/in.

Definitely no ED’s for us unless we win the lottery.

@2muchquan & @motherofdragons – I spent a lot of time in New Orleans and went to a grad level school there. New Orleans IMO is a special city for those who love music, food and enjoying life’s pleasures. Tulane was real work & a serious education. I think it can be hard frankly for people from other parts of the US to adapt - New Orleans is slower paced, hot & humid spring, summer & early fall and yes, I think there are lots of opportunities to party - we enjoyed the drive through daiguiri shops back in the day, the Columns Hotel and much more. Balance is key – I had to study for grad school finals on Mardi Gras Day - not easy. But there are few cities in the US that truly have the history, culture, joie de vivre & uniqueness of New Orleans – if anyone wants an insider view on Tulane and New Orleans - just ask.

Oy, the GPA conversion variations drive me around the bend. It seems to be different everywhere I look, and so I never know what exactly people mean when they say 4.0 or 3.85. Some places consider anything above a 90 to be a 4 and for others a 96 is only a 3.90. So how are you supposed to know when your kid only ever gets grades on a 0-100 scale? I’ve seen so many versions…

Went to an event at the HS tonight that was supposed to be “highly recommended” for juniors applying to college in the fall, and the turnout was pitiful. It’s really been driven home to me in the last couple of months how much I’m going to have to fill in the blanks for D during this process. Thank goodness I found CC or honestly I think I’d be totally lost. Our local school is just not set up to really guide kids like mine. I’m not even knocking them, they just don’t have the resources, but it’s been a real eye opener. I’ll be better prepared for younger D at least!

ETA: I had no idea we could ignore people! Lol, was that too enthusiastic? There are only 1 or 2 who pop up often enough to warrant it, but worth knowing.

CWRU info from here as well.

A here is 95 and up
93 and 94 are still considered an A but are 3.9/3.8
90-92 is an A- and 3.5-3.7

In our case low yield and a year off without anyone applying seems to have hurt the results. I’m not surprised though as I wouldn’t expect it to be a target for most kids here, just not in their geographic radar at all.

2016 2 0 0
2014 3 2 0

Very small data set but averages are

GPA 3.81
SAT 1600 1500
SAT 2400 2270
ACT 33

We do not weight or rank.
We can’t edit Naviance either.

@jmek15 I’m also from Texas and we have toured UT and A&M this spring. DS wants to go out of state but I want him apply to both. As others have mentioned, there is the auto admit rule but it doesn’t guarantee you admittance to your preferred major. DS preferred UT but I prefer A&M; I am an Aggie after all. So, because of the uncertainty of the majors, he will also apply to schools out of state. Does your D want to go anywhere in TX or just the flagships? SMU has a good engineering program and with good stats your D would qualify for merit aid there. It is a gorgeous campus and right in the middle of Dallas. Texas Tech is another great option for engineering and I would think there would be merit there too. One last one is University of Texas at Dallas. They have the McDermott scholars program with significant merit aid. I still have all of the materials from our tours. I keep hoping he’ll look through it this summer. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

I am headed to Chicago for a business trip in the middle of June. Thinking of taking S with me to look at a few schools while I am up there. If he wants cold, Chicago is certainly the place for him, right?

I forgot to mention another one of his stalker schools. I find this one really strange–US Coast Guard Academy. He gets email and regular mail from them. The reason I find it so odd is because he is a terrible swimmer.

On GPAs, one thing we have learned over the yrs is that some colleges recalculate GPAs according to their own formula, so what kids post may not be the actual GPA the university calculated.

^^^^

Exactly, they all recalculate according to their own in house formulas.

So, basically just get good grades and don’t stress it.

@2muchquan my D is applying ED to her first choice but she’ll also apply to Tulane EA. @jedwards70 Chicago is COLD. My D has an aversion to cold. She visited Northwestern in February and froze her butt off. It was 6 degrees, snowing, bitter cold. She decided that weekend that she can’t subject herself to that. So, we have to narrow her search to a bit warmer weather.

Our school anything 90 or above is an A/4.0.
