Wait… DS17 will be applying to UGA. I’m not sure it’s a fit though…
Delurking to wave gingerly We’re just beginning to marshall our forces here. Daughter is finishing her junior year at a public high school in MT. No real guidance from the school, which doesn’t turn out a ton of college-bound kids, so I’m learning a lot on this thread. Anyone here waiting for ACT results from April 19 in-school testing? She didn’t have an account and so I’m told we will receive scores in the mail within about 5-8 weeks. She is filling out a scholarship application due June 12, and I’d love to include her scores since she was very upset when taking the March SAT (personal stuff). Her score is good, but I know she can do better when her mind is more settled. She’s taking both the SAT and ACT again in June. Like many other parents here, I sure wish I could get her to study…
@2muchquan, I feel like I have been recently “re-lurking” since I haven’t posted in awhile. I have a huge technical report due and so I’m stressing about me and not D. Is that better? Not sure! Anyway, I am reading my favorite thread (you all) for breaks so I can keep up with what’s going on. State mandated testing this week and next and school until June 15th so trying to keep the momentum going until the end. Congrats to those who are done! Welcome new folks!
Welcome @Ghibelline2017 and @picklesarenice! This is a great place to be.
Welcome @Ghibelline2017 and @picklesarenice!
We can complain here when our nagging doesn’t work.
Our computers are going to catch fire as both kids play video games non-stop.
So nice to have more people join the conversation! I’m sure we can learn from everyone
I’ve been letting D veg this past week since turning in her Arabic final last Friday. Tomorrow she has to get up very early to make a 7am appointment—we’ve decided to apply for TSA precheck woohoo
We leave Monday to visit Ole Miss, Croft, and the Arabic program (and talk w the dining people about dairy allergies). D starts her summer Russian classes on Wednesday.
Another welcome @Ghibelline2017 & @picklesarenice!
@WhereIsMyKindle Can’t wait to hear about your Ole Miss visit! We should have visited during spring break, but I realized too late that visiting an LAC was truly a waste of previous touring time for D.
Welcome to our latest delurkers @Ghibelline2017 & @picklesarenice – it’s great to have more folks here! And, waving Hi to those who are still lurking. :-h
I checked, and the 2016 Parents thread took until late August last year to get to page 377. So, we are winning! They are on page 1431 now. I suppose we’ll be there or farther in a year.
DS finished his state testing (Smarter Balanced) yesterday. The school ran it really smoothly this year. English and math teachers signed up for a couple days each when they could use a Chromebook cart. The non-AP English and Math classes did it during AP test weeks and the AP and IB classes did it after their testing weeks. They called DS in and asked him what period would work for him for math testing, since he doesn’t have a math class at the school. Since it’s all computer based and adaptive, they didn’t have to worry about having different kids take it on different days over a 4+ week time span. Our state testing has no influence on kids’ grades or graduation, so it’s low pressure for the kids, at least.
Yay for delurkers and welcome @Ghibelline2017 & @picklesarenice. S is leaving for Western Washington tomorrow and visits UT Dallas and OU mid June. I have no vacation to join him so H is taking him. It aggravates me to not be able to join in the fun (I like college visits). On the bright side, D15 comes home tomorrow for a week-long visit before her internship. =D>
Welcome @Ghibelline2017 and @picklesarenice!
Our plan is to apply broadly and decide based on the acceptances. Distance is not a concern right now, only elimination factor is hot and humid places. I took him to Duke 3 years back for a science competition in August and he said it was too hot for him!
Ha too funny @srk2017 D is very excited to be spending the summer someplace hot & humid! Last year she spent 4 weeks in the woods of N Minnesota where she wore a hoodie part of almost every day.
@Ynotgo, do you have any sense if parents opted their kids out of the SB testing? I was surprised when my D mentioned half her math class was not taking it (calc A/B kids). I’m sure the school would love to have those higher level math kids actually take the test. Since it’s low pressure, I guess the motivation to spend the time doing the test wasn’t there. I’ve never opted my kids out, but my D sure could have used the extra time to study for SAT 2 physics or do other homework/projects as some of her friends are doing. Oh well. @srk2017, very late now, but congrats to your S on a fabulous SciOly result!
@mtrosemom UT Dallas was an interesting find last year when I started looking. Seems like there was lots of merit possibilities, strong sciences, and a killer chess team. :-B
I mentioned in another thread, their mascot could use a little work. He is very creepy looking! Like, you want to do a background check on him every time you see him.
I hadn’t looked into any school’s mascots. But then again, I am a proud Banana Slug from “Uncle Charlies Summer Camp”!
@canypava S didn’t mention anyone being opted out this year. (I’ll ask.) It’s very easy to opt out in CA. I know some moms opted their kids out last year because of the timing. There was a high-achieving HS in the Palo Alto, CA area that made headlines last year for their really high opt-out rate with state tests scheduled right before AP tests. I’m pretty sure the school came up with this low-stress plan to avoid the opt-out problem (and to make it easier on kids).
@canypava I know some folks that have opted their kids out of SB although that seemed more the case in MS than HS, I’ve not heard much about it at all lately but it was a bigger topic sophomore year when they take all 3 here. I personally fail to see the point if they are already in class. What, so they can skip? I don’t understand it at all. It’s a stupid test, my kids certainly do not study for it but I know for a fact opting them out would not translate into them studying for something else lol.
@mtrosemom I love your mascot! hI hope your S and have fun at Western. If they are staying up there I would reccomend Boundary Bay Brewpub for good food and beer, close to campus, and then in the Fairhaven area we loved Skylarks. We didn’t eat there but I suspect we will at some point. Good coffee
Looks to be classic spring drizzle and clouds. S17 has issues with their mascot…the Vikings. We don’t get it for the location. However if that’s the only thing he doesn’t like (not crazy about the school colors either but he will deal) then we can live with it.
He had much bigger issues with the Cowboys. He kind of liked the Loggers though! Which is funny as it really isn’t terribly environmentally friendly…though he will argue they replant the trees…
Thanks @Ynotgo and @eandesmom. The timing for my D is 4 hrs this week and 4 hrs next so it was not an issue with APs. I’ve never really thought it was a huge deal to just do the tests, although no one likes them. I don’t think the kids who opt out skip class, but just do whatever at their desk, not really sure. Yeah, maybe my D would not have used that time to her advantage anyway!
