Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@novicemom23kids Is your dd planning on the AP Latin? If not, she might want to take the Latin subject exam (only offered in Dec and June). Many universities offer credit for the Latin exam, equivalent to AP credits at a lot of schools… (It is one of the hardest exams my kids have taken and they have earned golds every yr.)

It does seem silly that there is no summer testing option for kids that are in still in school right now. My son has some projects due, finals coming up, lax playoffs, sat and act tests. Too much!!

Being able to study over the summer and take tests in August would be awesome.

D is officially a rising senior! She’s been looking forward to today all week but now that it’s here, she wonders why she feels no different. lol Still waiting for final grades to be reported and then will order a copy of her transcript to look over. She had a good spring semester, improving on her fall grades. Overall a very solid year with a tough schedule. :slight_smile:

The following is from the graduation requirements from one of the universities my D is interested in:

They then go on to talk about available FL sequences and state they usually takes 10 credit hours to complete.
But they also say the requirement can be met by one of the following:

But, if you don’t get a 3 on the AP exam. you need the SAT II for placement.

So she will need to take both the AP and SAT II to make sure she is covered.

@CaucAsianDad But, she doesn’t need the SAT II until you’ve determined: 1) She did not get a 3 on the AP, and 2) she is attending that specific school. Right?

@2muchquan – I think the problem with waiting for the AP score is that the scores are not released until early July, so if a student knows that the school she will be attending uses SAT II for placement, probably worth taking at same time as AP, assuming the language SAT II is offered in June. More fees to CB…

@Mom2aphysicsgeek Yes - D is taking AP Latin in Sr. Year. She has completed Latin 1-4 and now has AP next year. Reading about all of these language requirements I am thinking that we need to do some more checking for her target schools - maybe she should be taking the Latin subject exam just in case the AP Latin does not go well.

She really has a dislike for languages (Had taken Spanish in elementary school for 4 years and then French 1 and French 2 in MS). She switched to Latin thinking it would help her if she went into certain professional fields. She loves history and has loved and excelled at Latin in school.

@2muchquan the schools on S17’s list that allow testing out or placement require an AP score of 4 or better. Just an FYI as YMMV by school.

My take, in our case, is if he picks one of those schools, he will be taking language in college. Likely a new one. not the worst outcome. He is unlikely to score well enough on either some institutional offering the college has, or the subject test so we will not pursue that.

@CT1417 is correct, plus if she does not get a 3 on the AP she may get a qualifying score on the SAT II and get credit that way.

She is hoping to test out of the FL sequence so she can dabble in a couple of FL she finds interesting.

@novicemom23kids The subject test is heavy grammar based. I would have her take it in Dec b/c AP prep will probably not overlap.

@Mom2aphysicsgeek — thanks for that advice. Of course, I am not sure that my son will be excited about the prospect of sitting for the subject test w/o knowing if he will attend a school with a FL requirement…but I have marked it on the calendar. Of course, he will only be in Latin 4 next year and next year will be the first year Latin 4 has been offered. The language seems to be experiencing a second life with expanded enrollment these past two years.

@Mom2aphysicsgeek

Great idea! Thanks.

Bleh. I’m brain dead @CT1417 . Yes, of course, if your kid is not taking the AP test until next May, then that wouldn’t help to wait around for scores.

Hmmm, yeah, D is not going to be happy if she needs to take a subject test in December. Boo!

So, I started looking at some of the FL information a little more closely at schools on the WBOD, and was reminded that some schools require Phys Ed as part of their GenEd/Core/Foundation courses. It makes me want to remove them from the list…

@CT1417
My D is in Latin also. She did three years of Spanish and felt she was no where near proficiency so she changed to Latin and is loving it. She is taking Latin III on-line this summer so she can take AP Latin next year.

@2muchquan
At least in my D case she will be able to skip the AP test if she makes a high enough score on the SAT II. That’s how I will sell it anyway.

@2muchquan yeah, I have seen that at a few and UGH. I figure once the list shrinks we will dig more into core curriculum.

Too much of that level of detail and both of our eyes bleed.

I do feel a bit better though as S17 actually gave a valid reason (other than the buildings are ugly) as to why he took a school off of the list. Not a reason I expected at all but valid nonetheless.

Just want to clarity that I was referring to the Latin subject test and not the foreign language subject tests in general. The Latin subject test is grammar heavy vs poetry and prose.

I had a two semester PE requirement at college. It was fine…and there were tons of options, with even more today, as my older son attends same school. I recall skeet shooting and downhill skiing, although skiing required having Friday afternoons free to travel 30 minutes to the ski place. I took squash and something else.

I think the school now offers massage therapy and and walking tours…so not that difficult to satisfy the requirement other than carving out the time.

DD’14 and DS’15 have enjoyed their PE requirement…they’ve done ballroom dancing, ice skating, juggling, and TKD so far. They found it a good stress reliever, but I can see how yet another requirement could be annoying.
