Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

And subject tests are done! Fingers crossed that the regular SAT results are consistent with practice tests so D17 doesn’t have to retake. It would be great if the CB could return scores just a wee bit faster.

Happy Birthday @2muchquan D ! How nice to take the SAT on/around BD :))
I always had at least one final exam on my BD :frowning:

Question, There are some school that say you must send all scores of tests you take. Does anyone know how they know if all were sent. College Board does not tell them. Does the Common App? Is it merely honesty and integrity? Is there a notification? If anyone knows the real deal, please explain. Thanks

@BigPapiofthree I think it is honesty and integrity as you sign in couple places that they are accurate.

@BigPapiofthree Yes, it is my understanding that you are on the honor code when you are asked to send all scores. And (I’m not sure how this would happen), if they find you haven’t sent all scores, it is grounds for recision.

@BigPapiofthree – agree with above responses. CA only knows the scores the student enters. Some HS transcrips include standardized test scores, but even though our HS does not, I still did not feel comfortable omitting a score, so I had my older son submit all history, and younger son will do the same.

S will submit all. He came home from SAT2 today and said kids were discussing not sending in some. It raised the question of ethics. Of course, I wonder if they will get away with it

S will submit all when required, including his sophomore SAT that he foolishly took with a bad headache. (Only 100 points lower than his other SAT, so not as bad as it could have been.)

Different schools have different rules. If people have college lists these can be looked up to determine whether all scores must be submitted, if there are different rules for SAT I vs SAT II for score submissions etc.

If in doubt, it is easier to submit the SAT II score free scores to those schools who don’t need them if you already have a SAT I score that you do want to submit and make use of the free part.

Yeah - I think it is either cancel or submit all SAT/Subject Test scores if a college requires them. I had researched the ACT - seems different than the SAT - whereas SAT won’t allow deletion of a score after its 3 day rule passes
https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat/scores/canceling-scores

The ACT allows students to officially delete their ACT score later on. In its FAQs, http://www.act.org/content/act/en/products-and-services/the-act/help.html
ACT says this:
"Students own their test scores and may direct ACT to delete their scores for a particular test date from our records. (Note: Students may not delete scores used to document participation in State and District Testing.)

To delete your scores for a particular test date, you must submit a written request. Provide us with your name and home address, and we will mail you a form to complete and return to us. We will then permanently remove your record for that test date from our files. All scores from that test date will be deleted.

The thing that annoys me about colleges that want all scores is that the ACT charges for sending each test. My son used the ACT as his state required end of the year assessment for homeschoolers, so he has taken it three times, which makes it $36 to send all the scores. But it will probably only be a few schools that want all scores, so I guess we will just have to pay for those.

My son took the SAT 2 Math and Physics yesterday. Math was fine, Physics who knows. That test is just hard to prep for, and there isn’t much useful prep material out there. He watched a few Khan academy videos for lenses and optics and waves and then decided not to worry about it and just see what happens. After the test he said to go ahead and use the free score reports to send the scores, so I guess he thinks it wasn’t awful. He is just glad to be done standardized testing and schoolwork for the year.

Physics you can get 10 wrong and still get 800, but Biology you can get only 2 wrong. My DS says he has 2 wrong so far, so fingers crossed :-).

wow – @srk2017 – fingers crossed here too for your DS! Biology curve is awful – had not known that - my DS got an 800 in 9th grade on it - BUT he did prep a lot and really seemed to enjoy both the E & m stuff. If physics is that generous of a curve, it gives me hope that with prep over summer for all the topics not covered in Physics 1 that he can do well - it is far more important to his college interests than Bio is. Why so much testing!!!%$#*

Now that school is done it’s time to shift focus.

Anyone aware of schools whose supplements are ready? I mentioned UMich earlier. Any others? I haven’t been on fake-kid’s Twitter lately. I’ll check on that later.

go ahead - enjoy the "shift’ – rub it in - not done here till June 17th!! :expressionless:

Son17 done with SAT stuff now. On to the ACT next week.

Interesting news about SAT. My son had 2 friends that got the same test they took last time in March. I didn’t realize you had a chance to get the same exact test. That’s a huge advantage if you studied what you did wrong on the last test. My son thinks he scored about the same, so we’ll see. Like I said, this was just forced practice for Act next week. We will probably only submit ACT scores, where he scored a little better.

For Umich’s shipman scholarship, is it acedemic driven or a holistic view (heavy on ECs)?.

SAT
D has her driver license test today and takes the SAT tomorrow. I’m going to have her send the free scores to her safeties (all public) and next higher up (score-wise) public. I’m probably over-thinking this (that never happens with anyone on this thread, so I’m sure you’re all surprised!)… I always wonder if schools who say they super-score (all of D’s I think) don’t really look at the other scores and make some judgement, even if they aren’t meaning to. With publics it seems more likely they’ll toss all the scores into their magic decision software and spit out only the super-score for the adcoms to see.

SAT 2
Just one of D’s schools requires anything beyond SAT or ACT (some with writing and some not). One school says “SAT subject optional.” First off, do you guys think they really mean optional and don’t care? And just to show how clueless I am, does SAT Math 2 count as a subject test or is that something different? If not, what would the best be for EE major at a small tech school?

The Shift and supplements
Yep, we’re in that phase too (sorry those whose kids are still in the midst!) She starts her summer on-line classes Monday, but I don’t think they’ll be two big a deal (PE and finance). Now I’m going to poke into the college websites for supplements. But I won’t pass them on to her until she’s at least got a rough-draft of her main essay.

Pirates Certificate
If D11’s BF had gone to first choice MIT she would be soooo jealous of his pirate certificate, because he definitely would have gotten one!

@RightCoaster , was the whole test the same as March? Did your son get the same test too?

^^^^
re: SAT tests. The 2 kids said the test was exactly the same. They said there are 10 different tests handed out and they got the same exact one as last time. I don’t know if this is true, came from the mouths of 2 teenagers at a cook out I attended. My son did not get the same test, and he’s not sure if he did better or worse than March. He didn’t prep a lot for it. He’s trying to focus on the ACT next week, particularly the science section ( his other sections were decent).

Signing my kids up for an online class this summer where they will learn the basics of app development. They are not programmers at all, but it can’t hurt for them to learn something new.
