Regarding narrow waist, big thighs, my S likes Levis Athletic Fit
@MotherOfDragons I usually see the school profile referred to in things the GC is responsible for providing to the college. No one will say you for it, I don’t think.
And, Re: calling insurance, it’s important for kid know what to do if they get into an accident. I agree, part of that may be what NOT to say to police or agent. That was my intent with that one anyway.

aaaaand I just fell down the Amazon rabbit hole for an hour! :-B Got two mattress toppers for them because I’m squicked out by dorm room mattresses (they’ll both be at college dorms next month) and because the ones at home are looking the worse for wear.
The three of us are all about the same size and height (5-7", 5-8", to me at 5’9"), but we don’t share clothes because we have different styles. They do steal my shoes, though. And sometimes my dresses. It’s hard to find jeans that fit because we have curvy booties but long legs. Amazon has some good tall jeans that aren’t mom jeans, and so does Victoria’s Secret (I love their tall yoga pants).

those are the tall jeans. They smell terrible when you get them-I had to wash them several times before they were ok, but they are very comfortable and the proportions are excellent. And not bad for $19/prime.

My kids have been doing this for years, and I do a lot of shipping them stuff from Amazon directly to their dorms. The camp should give you a shipping address and how to do that. We do bring our own sheets and towel and pillow. Laundry pods and a big laundry bag are a must. Lots of ear buds or ear plugs because it can get noisy. A robe (preferably one that doubles as a towel-they each bring a robe and one towel for their hair). Uh, shower flip flops. Sunscreen. A hat. Bandaids. Those are the things that immediately jump to mind.

My advice to my D’s will be to be yourself. D17 tends towards scary tall heels, lots of black, think Lara Croft meets Tank Girl. D18 tends more towards Marilyn Monroe meets Tank Girl. She’ll do a breakfast at Tiffany’s dress with crazy tights and shoes. The only thing I would steer them away from is to not let the outfit be so strong that it distracts conversation away from academics. I don’t want them having a 15 minute conversation about where did you get those crazy tights rather than a 15 minute conversation about how did you build that crazy robot.
@payn4ward I have this thread bookmarked, but I have the notifications turned off unless somebody mentions me. So it’s easy to follow along, but I don’t get inundated.
D17 is taking the ACT with writing this morning as well. Hopefully she can be done with everything but the SAT II subject tests in October (math 2 and bio). She’s decided to apply to MIT EA, so we don’t know whether taking the 2 SAT II’s that late will be an issue, but since she doesn’t have any other choice it will have to be ok. We’re not sure if she should wait to send the EA application in until after she takes the tests, or just get it done and hope there’s a place on the application where she can note that she’s going to take it. It’s a lottery and a crap shoot, but it’s good to shoot for one dream school, I think. She’s not interested in any other super reachy schools.
My computer science class this week has consisted of 100 page + powerpoints followed by quizzes-5 chapters in one week. I read 500 powerpoint slides in four days. At one point I pulled up chapter 12 and it was 150 slides long and I said f*** it and just took the quiz cold (I get three tries). I got a 90%, so I decided that I already knew enough about internet security and encryption, lol. HTML starts this week. It’s not nearly as bad as Spanish 2, but I still hate online classes.
@MotherOfDragons love VS long yoga pants. My girls are both 5’9 and I’m the short one at 5’8 but we all have long legs and it’s always hard to find pants that fit in the length. Pink has boyfriend sweatpants in long that are super comfy and very long. I bought a pair for myself and my kids are always raiding my closet so I had to get them each their own. Too bad we can’t share shoes as I am two sizes smaller than them.
Thanks @payn4ward & @2muchquan – for those suggestions! appreciate them. @payn4ward – sorry about you S maybe deciding against taking the ACT - hopefully he has enough testing for his colleges of interest. We are starting to prep DS '18 to take the ACT for his first sitting in September.
Re QOTD: Re some college supps - considering submitting a maker portfolio through Slide Room. Will look at ZeeMee 0 have not seen it referred in on admissions sites I have visited - mostly engineering schools.
@jedwards70 – re PE - so glad ours is pass/fail - strict about attendance though - it is about 3 days a week. Re community service - do you have a local food pantry --maybe help out some over the summer; likely could participate in a few things now and then so there is something to show - seems like ties your community are helpful.
Yeah, change of heart happened.
I dropped DS off at the testing high school on the hour not 15 minutes early as usually done.
He was so grumpy that he refused to take water bottle as a protest to me.
Now I worry he might get dehydrated. X_X
Irregardless of score outcomes, we are calling it done with testing!! <:-P <:-P
Now, about DS19…and all these brand new prep books… ; ;
Wow @MotherOfDragons ^:)^ ^:)^ Great scores too!
I think the ** insurance ** thing was linked to making appointments and checking in ** at doctor’s office ** and filling in the insurance info on the form on clipboard.
I do make DH’s doctor appointments and drive him there and fill in the form for him as I don’t think he knows how to fill in that form. :)) So DS’s can have me do it until his wife can do it. =))
@Ynotgo Love Hawking story.
I thought the “mistook for” sounded familiar. Now I know it’s Oliver Sacks reference
I don’t get email notifications except for PMs. That would be too much. b-( I only see the numbers on the tiny globe. That is still too much so I un-bookmarked this one as I check this thread anyway.
Re: Colorado summer camp.
Oh, tell S don’t forget to carry water bottle always and everywhere. Get a carabiner to hang it or keep it in backpack pocket. Very important. Camelbaks are popular but I personally don’t like them. Some kids forget to refill water.
Bring good sunglasses and hats. UV is strong. My ophthalmologist is watching my eyes. Both DS’s wear glasses with transition lenses. In other parts of country, e.g. in the east, those seem rare.
@srk2017 I think the blog/website is most useful for artists, performers, and athletes (sports game video.)
Now that the testing is over. I wonder if I can prod DS to do a recording to submit via SlideRoom. I am so ambitious and persistent :))
@eandesmom oh, even with the 28xLong jeans, I take them to alterations and have the waist reduced by 1.5 inches or put an elastic band in the waist (when they were younger.) Worth it as DS17 would rather hold onto his pants all day rather than wearing a belt :))
He still wears mini boden size 14Y jeans from I guess 3-4 years ago (they no longer make size 14Y and created bigger Boys line) with waist elastic band pulled as much as he can. Those jeans are very tattered now. He is unfortunately not into tattered jeans. I may take them to alterations and turn them into shorts.
Just saw on CB, the 4 free reports for May has already been fulfilled on 6/7. So technically the schools already know the scores but we have to wait till Wednesday. [-(
@jedwards70 we ran into the lack of service as well with D15 because of her studio schedule. To compensate, she ran a collection for women’s work clothes for the local chapter of Dress for Success. She put a a bin at the studio and people dropped things off. She then organized and brought it over to their office. Your S could do something similar for an animal shelter or veteran’s center. Does he ever peform in shows that donate proceeds to a cause? If so, they count as service. Does he student teach (without getting paid) or tutor for any honor societies?
@dfbdfb - Yes, kids do come back from a tour and change before an interview -especially if the tour was on a 90 degree day!!
S home from ACT - said it was “pretty good” which is the standard response. He stays pretty cool about the whole testing thing. He did the writing even though it’s not required at most of the schools on his list. At this point we don’t plan to do subject tests. He’s not applying to any ivies or schools that require them, but some are “optional” and one is “recommended”. Are we crazy not to do them? I would rather see him spend the time on developing his essays.
91 degrees and 41 percent humidity today. See if little miss ‘no pants’ Really thinks she can handle it for an extended period.
(Technically she’s from Szechuan, China. I’ll have to remind her of that.
Good luck for great results to all ACT takers today!
Son taking it in September. I printed a free ACT science section from the web for him to try today. He couldn’t answer half the questions. Full melt down. Oops. That’s gonna set him back a few days.
It’s been said that the Science section is really just another reading comprehension section, with a lot of quick tips available to improve fairly(?) easily (on CC and elsewhere). Hopefully he won’t be set back that much @STEM2017.
@262mom Aeropostale is another one that has pants with sub-30 waists. If it makes you feel any better, my S wears a 25x31 (a size that doesn’t exist in nature). He makes do with severely belted 27x30 from Aero. (They are held up mainly by friction and prayers, so they tend to sag for the missing inch of length)
@2muchquan Thanks. Agreed. I just sat with him and reviewed the section. 100% reading comprehension. If you read carefully, you have all the answers in your head. That helped.
I hope the ACT went well for all your kids! In my house, we are eagerly waiting for June 15 to see her subject test scores and make sure that we are done with testing. Until then, D has to buckle down and look into the colleges on the list I made. I need her to take charge of this process eventually!
D just returned from ACT with writing. I am happy that there was no drama this time from forgotten materials or getting lost. She thinks she did well. She is now DONE with standardized testing, until AP’s next year. <:-P
Yup, DS is back home happily playing video games and skyping with a friend talking about the test. <:-P
D said science, English and reading were great but she didn’t finish math and had to totally guess on the last three. Fingers crossed she got at least the subscores she needed and can be DONE.
@STEM2017 For Science, kids only look at charts and graphs and skip reading the description of experiments (some very bad English there,) and directly go to questions and read questions and answer choices.
I haven’t watched these but there are some useful looking videos.
http://www.onlinepreplive.com/stem/
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_4_TRI-OY0 same one only science here.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ht0pVDQQ9x4
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lh6eU18n6OI
But totally thanks to Reddit she now knows the questions she had to guess on are ones she thinks she got correct so yay!
Good luck to all the ACT test takers! It was a bit sad not to be taking S17 to take it today but I think it was the right call. He has a ton more movement in his right hand and writing is improving but it would still be far from ideal not to mention the fact that he didn’t do an iota more of studying from the minute the fracture happened until now.
We did put the test time to good use and actually made it through the full list and did a lot of slashing. We are down to 9 schools. Sadly we are still at 11 essays and about $750-800. LOL! But at least I can start figuring out if we are going to try to see any this summer or not and research travel plans. We have only seen 3 out of the 9 and all remaining are out of state. Ugh. At the moment I am leaning towards hitting 2 in late august, one we can drive to in Oct and the other 3 are apply and visit if admitted/money is right as either they are lower on the list/backup or really really far away and visiting won’t necessarily help chances of admission.
S has agreed to get the common app and essay done over the summer but is balking at more than that. We will see how that plays out. He thinks I am crazy and no one does that. Sigh. Unfortunately that would only cover 3 out of the 9. While 2 additional are CA, they also have supplements. Hopefully the “free” counselor will push him to do more than that.
I do have an AP test score question. Do folks usually send these with transcripts or is it a self reporting thing on the applications? Seems silly to send them in the fall when they will have more scores available next July. Also, it seems easier to delete a score than to withhold it if you know you don’t want to use it at all ever, is that correct?
@whataboutcollege we’ve used (I mean me lol) the mail icon in naviance to get directly to the “request more info” page but not to email the school directly with any questions. S is definitely not at that point in the process. I did notice that upon clicking the icon some offer and email and some an email and a request info link but not all had both.
@MotherOfDragons UGH on the powerpoints. Death by powerpoint is real and NOT what powerpoint was intended for but that’s another topic.
@payn4ward S19 was sad to give up the elastic, it was a great option for him. We have purchased a lot of gap kids pants over the years that had the elastic. Boden, once they got long enough were generally too wide in the legs…just looked odd on him. On shorts though it can be really good.
@flatKansas Volcom used to have some nice options in 25/26. Mostly online and not cheap but they were out there. At that size we did a lot of Abercrombie kids when their jeans would go on sale. Aero’s are too big in the legs (limited slim options) t most of the time for my guys but we have purchased them in the past. It was easier when they had a store at our local mall but they are gone now so it’s kind of a pain.
