Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

So in other words, just do it precisely the way actual scientists read actual scientific articles? :))

(And for once, the mechanical-laugh look of that emoji feels precisely right. )

Driving: Well, the child now officially has her drivers license and is [gulp/] on our insurance.

Thank-you notes: I’m with @mtrosemom on thank-you notes (by email—it’s more immediate) for one-on-one time. Whether it’s a positive in the admissions process or not, it’s a nice politeness, you know?

Someone mentioned Rochester - another school in the match category with good merit. Again what % of tuition does their merit cover?

Rochester = Pants, right? $-)

@nw2this RIT or U of Rochester? RIT covers ~50% ($18K). NMF and NMSF are eligible. I don’t know what U of Rochester offers.

@2muchquan lol. pants w/ fleece and probably with snow pants on top of that.

My kids struggled with the ACT science section (which was frustrating because science is a strength) until they stopped reading the sections and just going straight to the questions. After that, they aced the section every time.

@payn4ward re: AP test scores. Your post just made me think of something. We visited Georgetown this week and the admissions officer said they are not “score selection” and she explained this meant they do not let you select the scores you want to send. They want to see a full picture and want all scores for any test you sat for for that testing agency. It didn’t occur to me until I read your post that this probably includes the APs too then.

Does anyone know if submitting all scores to Georgetown includes APs? On another thread there is a poster who doesn’t want to send his SAT score but I don’t see how that is possible since they also require 3 SAT subject matter tests. Seems they have their bases covered for making sure they get scores for every test the kid takes.

Congratulations to all of kids who took the ACT yesterday and are done with testing or now that much closer to being done!

@paveyourpath – I am pretty sure AP scores are not required on college apps - may be self reported. Anyone know differently? I am not aware of “requirements” to send APs. But certainly some schools require all SAT & SAT subject test scores to be sent.

Found the answer to my question. They require all test sittings of the ACT, SAT and SAT II subj tests.

I can’t wait to get through this process. These poor kids. This is also a reminder to try and get standardized testing completed as soon as possible as this could happen anywhere. Glad our ACT-takers were unaffected!

Went to the first of graduation parties yesterday. I am not the best organized person, so I didn’t get a card, nor did I want to go out in the heat to get one. D drew some balloons, stuff on a blank sheet of paper while I put $50 cash in the envelop. DH thought it is too bad that we don’t have a card and the kid (neighbor’s kid whose party is a mostly catered affair) only graduates once in her life. But I don’t think people will do anything with the cards anyway. The money is real, right? Am I being too bad in etiquette? What did you do with the cards?

I did gather a list of suggestions on personalized gifts for graduate parties from FB, just didn’t have time to implement! :frowning:

@nw2this looking back at my spreadsheet I show URochester gave $20k merit on my NPC result. Looks like the report average non-need aid around $24K.

We usually don’t buy cards, DS makes one online and prints the card and makes a matching envelope. spends aroudn 15 mins to do it.

Thank you all for grade deflation feedback. My direct evidence does indicate grade deflation does impact med school admissions. Some of the kids I know ended up forgoing research or MCAT prep to focus on grades and ended up taking year or two gap years to gain the research experience and study for MCAT.

@2muchquan Completely agree that the kids need to get the standardized testing as soon as possible especially since the ACT is not even going to reschedule that test. I feel bad for those kids that are now going to have to wait 3 months.

Good luck to all the kids that took the ACt. Hope they get to the scores they want.

Congrats to the new drivers!

SAT II results should be in this week. Fingers crossed they are timely and good. D only needs them for 1 school so it will be hard convincing her to retake if the scores are lower than expected.

Went ahead and planned trip in August to visit her Plan B school and she’s starting to get excited about that. She still hasn’t made any more progress with the list. sigh

So a certain know-it-all poster (not on this thread…so annoying) stated matter of factly that no one ever finishes their college apps before school starts. Challenge accepted!

School profile - ours is not posted on the website but I will ask D to request it when she requests a copy of her transcript for me to check.

PE - our school only requires one year. Grading is based on attendance and effort. Thats the way it should be, imo. Most kids fulfill that by participating in a sport or band. But then there are the ranking implications of including sports in the GPA every semester.

@itsgettingreal17 I doubt D17 will get her college applications does before school starts but I’m pretty sure she’ll be done by November 1, regardless of dire predictions I’ve seen here. She knows just how full her schedule will be.

@CA1543 Thanks, you are right! Found it on the site that it’s only the SAT, SAT subj tests and AP.

@paveyourpath Each send-all-score-schools have a different rule. Some want all your SATs or all your ACTs. Others want both SATs and ACTs but you can choose which SAT IIs to send. So I think you will have to check with the AO of each school. Many schools suggest send everything, and they use the ones that benefit you most. I am agreeing with that sentiment. When in doubt, send everything.
However, no school requires AP exam scores.

You mean only the SAT, SAT subj tests and ACT.

@itsgettingreal17 I join you in accepting that challenge. Really only because my son told me yesterday he wants to have all of his apps done by the time schools starts (full disclosure they probably won’t be submitted until after school starts). College counselors sent out an email last week of school basically making this a high priority on the summer to do list. They will be available for two weeks before schools starts to help kids with questions, etc. All of our kids will be slammed those first few months of senior year so we are in on accepting the challenge. I don’t know who annoying is but thank you to annoying for encouraging us to get this done early.

Good for you for making sure you get the profile. It’s attached to our kids transcripts so the schools should be providing it to parents for review.

@SincererLove At first blush, I think the lack of a formal card may be viewed negatively. But ultimately, I don’t think it should matter. Not like the kid really cares about the cards. Just a money holder really that I suspect aren’t always (or even often) even read.
