Who else is counting down hours to SAT score release? X_X :)]
WHEW, i caught up, lol–you guys are so chatty i cant keep current on this thread :))!
counting down here too…praying we are d-o-n-e!
and @2kidsinky —you might want to take a peak at the college of NJ…they have some interesting things going on there in deaf/SPed.
Thanks for joining & sharing @rolshan & @2kidsinky. This has been such a helpful and supportive group thread. Our DS is the first going through this process and we are trying to stay on top of things - know it will be a wild roller coaster ride. @2kidsinky – i find your post above very relevant – things do change over time - interest in majors, considerations such as distance from home, location of colleges, DS’s level of independence/engagement in process etc. I think there should be 2 semester course or on-going workshops at schools to really help parents & students through this and to help people think through important considerations - relating to courses & commitments senior year as well as testing, finding “right fit” colleges-- atmosphere / competitiveness /rigor as well as prep for careers/research etc. – So many aspects of the process are introduced by GCs at our school and students/families try to make sense of available tools (Naviance, etc.) but lots of questions arise and feedback is needed - will be busy through December at least on this process I am sure. Do want to apply East Coast & West, some large, some small, some super techie and some more well-rounded - cover bases – hopefully without doing crazy amount of apps! Thanks to everyone participating!
We are only counting down to midJuly re AP scores and SAT Math Level 2. Good luck to those waiting for the May SAT scores!!
@payn4ward Not waiting for this release date tomorrow, but the ACT next week and my daughter’s SAT’s in July! This is our second take of both tests. Just wanting to be done with this part.
We are on the three countdown clock, tomorrow, AP, and SAT subject tests. SO ready to be done with the standardized tests.
The Common App is supposed to roll over and the essay prompts will be the same as last year. I am hoping that we won’t have to deal with the Coalition App as well!
This would need to be the first year since they have wiped data for all past years.
I just tried to create an app and it would only give me choices as an applicant for 2016 application. How do they know who is applying for next cycle or will they retain 2016 applicants basic information also?
@eandesmom I’m on my mobile so i can’t as add i want to, but our visiting was dictated by the tours. We had to drop one off the list because the tour time made it not work with the others. If it had been first choice I would have made the others work around it, but its not a current fave because of the small dept size.
@texaspg Here’s info from the Common App about the rollover changes: http://www.commonapp.org/whats-appening/college-counseling/common-app-account-rollover
@nw2this - Thanks for mentioning autoslash. I have compared the prices for car rental in Hawaii for next month and the rate came $25 cheaper than Costco rate for 5 days. Not huge savings, but every dollar saved is every dollar earned or you can apply to one more college
We are waiting for one SAT II tomorrow and one AP test in July. .DS didn’t prepare for SAT II Bio and not sure if he is going to get perfect score or not. This time AP scores will be out on first day for CA, so no need to be creative to find out scores Last year he was the tech support for his classmates on how to check scores early.
@ynotgo - thanks for the link. I am trying to read between the lines and it sounds like they may retain the essay?
Looks like this is the first step from collegeboard in providing same choices as the new guys.
Waiting for June 4 SAT results in July. This was probably D’s last chance to get it together on the math section and we will probably need live with the results.
Not too much angst for the APs except Physics I. She only needs a 3, but feels she missed a lot.
I was laughing at your S’s search for small waist shorts, we have been there. My S still has the problem and he is 28. He is only about 2 1/2% body fat and has a waist in the low 20’s. Luckily it is his wife’s job to keep him feed now, I remember trying my best to get him to 50 lbs for his 10th birthday.
@texaspg I wouldn’t bother entering in a draft essay in the CA until the rollover occurs (and, even then I’d wait). Do it in Word or Google Docs, and then paste it in when totally complete, next fall. That would be my suggestion anyway, but I’ve never done this. I don’t think typing an essay in a text box is the most pleasant user experience…and you may lose your work.
We are counting down to results for SAT IIs tomorrow (Chem and Math II). Then AP tests in mid-July. D says she is done testing (well until next set of AP exams next year), so here’s hoping she got the scores she needs tomorrow. The 1 school on her list that requires SAT II’s is such a good option that I would have to insist she retake if she didn’t do well.
Drexel I came across this article about construction this am http://www.newsworks.org/index.php/local/item/94553-drexel-university-to-begin-work-on-16-million-expansion?utm_source=dlvr&utm_medium=twitterauto&utm_campaign=social-inbound
Fears/concerns I also have a worrier. She has some major food intolerances. We’re both concerned that she’ll find enough variety in on-campus food. At least we are armed with the right questions to ask after having negotiated dining with her older sister, who has a different set of allergies and intolerances!
List update D and I texted on-and-off for several hours last night (she’s studying at Ole Miss this summer) about good ol’ SLoP. One school has been crossed off. It was there just in case she hated this summer.
She has decided to prioritize Arabic opportunities (coursework, summer study abroad for language aquisition, semester/year study abroad w internships) over International Relations schools w decent Arabic programs. Of course, she wants strong IR to go with the best Arabic :))
GW is slipping down, down, down. American is holding its own----she wants to sit in on a high-level Arabic class to see how it compares to what she’s experiencing this summer (plus she’d need one of their highest merit scholarships to attend since we won’t qualify for need-based aid).
Oklahoma is beating out the other Arabic Flagships because of their better net price (even absent NMSF) and stronger IR programs with concentrations of interest.
Right now Ole Miss (Arabic/Croft/CISS) > Oklahoma (on paper; must visit) > American > Ohio State (on paper; must visit) > Arizona/Maryland > George Washington
She will also apply to UD because in-state
Yay for progress!
Waiting for scores Just for APs! D will be able to see her scores the first day because of her location this summer. I will have to wait for a call/text or until the next day. Sheesh.
Agree with @2muchquan, but that is based on my experience with older son. I am sure that CA has fixed the glitches by now, but the year my son applied, all paragraph breaks disappeared from essays. I forget what he did exactly, but there was some massive workaround including use of different browsers and copying and pasting the essay repeatedly. That was just a bad year with the move to new CA. He kept everything in Word files and then pasted in when ready to file a school.
Also, I cannot remember how to do this but there was some way to use different CA essay for different schools. Suppose someone is applying both Engineering & Business (yes, unlikely) and would want a different CA essay for the Eng schools vs the Business schools. There is a way to create different CA submissions but IIRC, once you move on to the second version, cannot return to the first.
Someone with a more recent applicant can probably explain that one better. And, better example might be applying as CS major in Eng vs A&S.
@WhereIsMyKindle Can’t wait to hear how your D likes Ole Miss. We are going to do the August open house.
D’s list (Arabic & Accounting) looks like this right now (not factoring cost) :
Maryland > Oklahoma > Ole Miss > Ohio State > 10 other schools that have a workable combination of the two.
Welcome @rolshan @2kidsinky. 2kidsinky, I remember you from the 2015 thread.
We are waiting for physics subject test score tomorrow, AP scores and June SAT scores in July. Then S is done. His ACT score is good enough for what he wants, just not quite to the high scholarship potential level. I am hoping this SAT test puts him over the threshold. If not, he still is done with testing. :-bd
@CT1417 Just going off what I read somewhere, will try to find a source. Last year you could only update your essay a few times (3?). I think you can now change your essay as much as you want, and when you hit ‘submit’, that is what is sent. There is no ‘versioning’ to allow you to select from different versions for different schools…yet. That would have to be done in your Word docs. So, now, I think you just paste in what you want to send a school, and hit submit.
Someone can correct me if I’m wrong, while I’m looking for the link
