Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

Apply Texas essay prompts for high school class of 2017:

S is doing #4 on the CA I believe. He is formatting the essay around his FRC problem solving skills.

@Ynotgo DD took AP Lit last year. She said The Crucible, Wuthering Heights, The Great Gatsby. Basically google the master AP Lit Reading list and read anything that hasn’t been read or won’t be read this coming year in class. There is also a list out there of most frequently cited books in the AP exam 1970 to 2014. She suggests not reading Moby Dick or Old Man and the Sea.

^^^^

I read it as they are taking your highest score without bothering with all of the conversion nonsense. Then next year they’ll have a better handle on overall scores and can adjust as necessary for 2018.

@Ynotgo

My D’s summer reading assignment for AP Lit is The Handmaid’s Tale but she does not recommend it. It is a dystopian novel however.

@Ynotgo QOTD: Crime & Punishment (my all-time favorite book).

Summer Reading Assignments…

DS is taking AICE Literature (need to read both):

  1. The Namesake Jhumpa Lahiri .
  2. Death of a Salesman (play) Arthur Miller .

The AP Literature seniors have to read (both)

  1. Brooklyn Colm Toibin .
  2. Fences (play) August Wilson .

D’s AP/GT Lit’s summer assignment is to read at least 3 books: the Metamorphasis and 2 student selections, and the teacher provided a long list of suggested authors, but they are really only suggestions.

@CaucAsianDad He read Handmaid’s Tale in 10th grade. For one unit, they had to read a dystopian novel chosen from a list, and that was the only one he hadn’t already read. He liked it OK, but not a lot.

@itsgettingreal17 I have bad memories of C&P from college, because I had influenza or some similar long-lasting illness while reading it but still attending class despite a fever. Somehow the interaction between the plot and my illness was not a good thing. Good idea, though.

@disshar DS read Crucible in 11th and Great Gatsby in 10th. I read Great Gatsby after he did, because I’d never read it. I still don’t get why it is a significant book. I agree with your DD about Moby Dick.

I googled the list. Wow, Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison is on the test almost every year!

DS completed his essay for the Coalition App, back in May. He picked the “What is the hardest part of being a teenager now” prompt. He thought it was the easy prompt, but as he worked on it, it clearly the hardest (IMHO). He hammered it into shape, but it took some work. :slight_smile:

@mdcmom, both of my kids did NSLI-Y China Summer programs. When they went, they took lots of gifts with them: T-shirts, books, sports things, lotions, perfume. Anything that reprent your local hometown is the best. Just try not to give anything that says made in China which is hard to do shopping in the US :). If possible, try to get things made in the US. Another thing I gave the kids to take was state quarters.

@Gator88NE The Coalition prompts look more interesting than the Common App prompts. My son is not really inspired by any of the Common App prompts. I think they will be challenging for him. Probably the hardest part of the application process for him.

I really like the coalition prompts. Better than the Common App prompts, imo.

@itsgettingreal17 We can’t find the prompts in the Coalition App site. Can you tell me where to look? Also, several sections are not ready for data input - strange considering we are very close to GO time.

EDIT: Never mind, I found the prompts on the intro website - not in the application itself. Still strange.

I agree @rightcoaster. I am not inspired by them, either.

S safely delivered to camp early yesterday where he will be a counselor and lifeguard for the summer. He’ll come home for one LAX tournament and a family beach vaca. House is too quiet already!!

I just emailed him the common app essay prompts and his ACT results (same composite, but a one point bump if super-scored) with the bad news that I want him to take it just-one-more-time. Also sending a box up with his summer AP Lit reading. I have a feeling he is going to ignore me completely and put everything off until the end of August. X_X

D17 got a 33, woot! I think that’s enough to be done with that particular test, although i should go look at the merit site just to make sure.

@MotherOfDragons Congrats to your D on the great score!

@texaspg My bad, posting the images.

I copy & paste the link but that turns into image. I guess it is an image link. In any case, links to FB, twitter, etc are not allowed, I am told, so no more links to the twitter from (fake kid) twitter will be posted here.

@jmek15 maybe your son will be bored at camp on a rainy day and work on his essays/apps.

@MotherOfDragons 33 is a sweet score! Congrats!

@MotherOfDragons Wow, great score! Congratulations! My D’s score is not up yet.
