Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

Congrats to all who are happy with the ACT scores today! Some fantastic news there. We are still waiting for D’s scores – argh. Website says to check back every Wed. and Friday, and that we’ll get an email when they are ready. Anyone else in the same boat? Hopefully it doesn’t mean there’s a problem.

@RightCoaster, sounds like your S should take the ACT again in September before all the senior year school stuff really kicks in. October seems kind of late. We’re waiting for the June results, but I think S is good to go either way. I can’t see him studying for either test again.
CONGRATS to all the kids who are finishing up school this week. Soon all will be seniors. :open_mouth:

@brindlegreyhound Thanks for that tip. I will try that later on tonight!

@collegecue We have not visited FSU yet. It is only a 3 hr drive for us, so it doesn’t take a huge amt of coordination for visiting like some of the other schools we have visited. FWIW, I really liked Dr. Ruder in the Russian dept. She was super nice and encouraging. I think for a student entering with just 1 yr of Russian, UKY would be an awesome fit. Their fully funded study abroad opportunities can’t be beat. Seriously, they can use their entire NMF scholarships for study abroad. (That is a huge amt toward any abroad program.)

Russian is a really difficult language to master, so 1 yr will just be a toe dipped in. Dd is also obsessive about her languages. She has been studying them yr round for hours every day for the yrs she has been studying them. She used to walk around the house pronouncing the Russian R sound b/c her French R was ruining it. Hours upon hours I could hear her practicing. Her level is very unusual for a high school student. She just doesn’t want to enter as a freshman and already be at or beyond the level of all of the upperclassmen.

@picklesarenice Here! My DD is in the same boat. Last ACT, we got the score on the first day, so it’s frustrating!! They clearly say the score is ready starting from 6/21, so I wouldn’t worry about if there is any problem.

S is meeting with the “free” college counselor in training and discussing essay topics, resumes, brag sheets and LOR’s. It should be interesting to get his take on it all when I pick him up. I admit I am loving this aspect as he would NEVER agree to talk about any of that stuff for at least 2 weeks and even then it would be absolute torture for both of us.

@HiToWaMom at least it was the last “full” day. Of course that doesn’t change the fact that both kids still have finals to do including a horrid FL project for S19. I swear the 2 kids final FL projects have been like bad history class art project deja vu from middle school!

@jmek15 Oh my goodness, that list is NUTS! They have to read ALL of that over the summer? Ugh. That wins the worst AP Lit homework award.

I did look at the full line up for next year and assuming there aren’t changes (this is last years list) here is what we are looking at.

TEXTBOOK/MATERIALS USED IN CLASS:
Our core texts are The Norton Anthology of World Masterpieces and 100 Best-Loved Poems.
Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner
Foster’s How to Read Literature Like a Professor
selections from Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey
selections from The King James Version of The Bible
Euripides’ Medea
Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex
Shakespeare’s Hamlet
Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest
Dickens’ Great Expectations
and either Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights, Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice or Cormac McCarthy’s The Road.

We will also read supplementary materials (additional readings and practice tests) and secondary materials (literary essays) to prepare students for the Advanced Placement Literature exam.

I will be interested to see if this list changes. Kids that took Honors English 9, if the list stays the same, may have an advantage

*Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, Cormac McCarthy’s The Road and Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner *were all options that could have been chosen for H9 summer homework. I honestly can’t recall if S17 did choose The Kite Runner in the end or if he went with The The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time. He had started out with Shelley’s Frankenstein but couldn’t get through it and at the 11th hour switched to a book I already owned.

They also read the Odyssey.

@snoozn that All the Light We Cannot See sounds lovely! I just sent a sample to my kindle, @flatKansas same thing with The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, yay for some new things to check out!

For everyone reading “Henrietta Lacks”… You will run out and HPV vaccinate your kids sooooooo fast (if you haven’t already) and you will have nightmares about those virulent HPV cells!

@picklesarenice The ACT scores are released on a rolling basis. My son took the ACT last December. His MC score was not released on the first day (Dec 22) and not posted the next day (Wednesday). It was posted at 8am on Friday which happened to be Christmas Day. It turned out to be a wonderful gift for him but it could have gone the other way and ruined our Christmas. Scores were released on a rolling basis for a few weeks. The writing scores get released separately. My son received his writing score in mid-January. As for the email, I think we knew my son’s score for 2 or 3 days before we received the email. I know waiting can be frustrating. Good luck!

If you tell the ACT people to send the scores now, do they sit on them until the writing part is done, then send the entire thing, or send half now and you have to chase them to send the writing part?

Slightly off-topic, I’ve been doing homework for four hours and my mind is goo. I am not doing 4 studios in the fall. One is going to have to be online. I can’t brain, I has the dumbs… b-(

Call me dense or math challenged, but wouldn’t a 1400/1600 (old SAT) and 1330/1520 (new SAT) be the same, ratio wise?

@carachel2 kids vacc’d - yupyup!

@mommdc new SAT is out of 1600. The PSAT was out of 1520.

D already has HPV vaccine.

@eandesmom Wuthering Heights & Great Expectations still give PTSD flashbacks from HS. Those and Les Miserables.

I just spent quite a bit of time on the Public Honors website. No real help with Russian aspect (though I was happy to see that 3 of her schools are listed in the top schools with Boren winners, so that is super encouraging!)

I did want to share this scholarship list. It is easy to skim through and includes both NMF and other scholarships.
http://publicuniversityhonors.com/2016/04/04/best-major-universities-for-national-merit-scholarships-part-two/

@mommdc you made it out of 1520…that was the PSAT. Are you asking for the new SAT out of 1600?

Just a note about the honors website list, it is outdated so do check the school website to confirm. (Good idea regardless as scholarships change often)

@MotherOfDragons Yes, the score is not considered complete until the writing portion is graded. They will send you, and schools, the report after the writing portion is posted.

@Tgirlfriend If you go to Apply Texas I believe they have the essays required for UT and A&M. Both require Essay A and I believe A&M requires Essay C as well as an engineering one if you are applying for admission as an engineer major. Both of the Universities Web site state the requirement.

I

@itsgettingreal17 That list was posted in April of this yr. The main drawback to its organization is that it doesn’t distinguish between instate and OOS students. The awards may be for instate students or offer the same $$ amt to OOS, so the rest of the OOS tuition remains.

@flatKansas lol! I agree on Great Expectations but actually enjoyed Wuthering Heights and have read it more than once (I may own it…would have to check). I didn’t have to read Les Miz, thank goodness. Not a Dicken’s or McCarthy fan at all. I can get through it but…not my thing. Nor is Steinbeck for that matter.

@payn4ward do they have to read all of that over summer? Or “just” Crime and Punishment and Wuthering Heights.

Crime and Punishment reminds me of one of my favorite classes in undergrad, Russian Lit. I actually took two Russian Lit classes and cannot recall which books were in which but C&P was in one of them. Craziest Russian professor ever, 700 seat lecture hall with a waiting list a mile long to get into his classes. Very animated, would act out many of the scenes, standing on top of desks, running up and down the stairs…

Long retired. I tried to look up his name the other day but he is long gone. Need to pull out my transcript as it’s been driving me nuts!

@brindlegreyhound I love that they “assigned” the college app essay!
