Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@Hades321 When you log into your CB account, go to my sat section, you will see all the scores. Under each score these is a small link said see sent scores. Click on that and you should see where and when the scores were sent.

@jedwards70 and @greeny8 …bahahhah that’s awesome about your parents! So good to know I’m not alone! I’m pretty sure the best thing for me to do is just accept that my mom is going to complain about whatever choice is made. UGH.

Safeties: Honestly I don’t even know what that is anymore for D. She grew up (us too!) drinking the Texas Kool-Aid that if she worked hard and was in the top 7-10% she would be an automatic admission to our two best state schools. She is still guaranteed admission, just not to the major of her choice. What’s the point of that? It’s ok though, she really doesn’t want to apply to our state schools anyway. If the application does get completed it will be because we forced her to do it as a “safety.”

** Grandparents **
Ours have been very hands-off about the whole thing. There have been two awkward moments though. 1) We were visiting my mom and stepdad in Florida on Ivy day, and when DS’15 found out that he had made it into Cornell, my stepdad called my stepbrother (who also had a DC’15) and made my DS tell him that he had been accepted. This was even though DS hadn’t ever spoken to my stepbrother before, which made it suddenly feel like a competition :stuck_out_tongue: . 2) Right after that, my older two were talking to my stepmother and her sister, and they began criticizing them for going to Cornell because a state school would be just as good. No congrats to DS at all. Usually my steps are really wonderful to my kids but that was just weird!

@Hades321, You ask a good question. I was trying to figure that out yesterday as well. Wanted to know if CB sent scores to Bama. I could not find it. Called CB. After a 10 minutes search by a phone representative who was hard to understand(I hate foreign outsourcing of call centers), he said that the redesigned SAT site does not yet have a way to see where you sent scores, and if they were sent. He looked it up, and told me I had a request in, but it hadn’t been sent. He seemed to think they must be working on it. I must say, I am hating on College Board. Hope that helps…

@whataboutcollege Thank you. I was staring at that page forever and didn’t notice that link

If you have requested ACT scores to be sent, any idea how long it takes for colleges to receive them?

Grandparents
My dad would have totally loved College Confidential when I was looking for colleges. He was all about searching for merit and spent hours researching big merit scholarships for me to apply to before the internet made research easy. I have a much better appreciation now of how much time he actually spent helping me than I did then! I sent lots and lots of applications, and he passed out cigars at his office when I accepted a scholarship for college. So my parents completely understand that we are chasing merit, and are supportive of the less prestigious schools on our list. My in laws are just glad my kids are going to college somewhere, since some of their other grandkids are struggling to graduate from high school.

Stress
My stress level is pretty low, because we have sure thing safeties like Alabama and our state schools are (barely) affordable. I wish the college list was more settled, but ultimately S17 can apply to as many reaches/big merit schools as he likes after he applies to 3 safeties, and it will all work out. I think him leaving for college will be more stressful than the application process for me.

Stress
I’m less stressed about the colleges’ decisions and more about S’s. He has always said he wants to go far, but I’m not sure he even knows how he defines “far” or “too close” or if he’ll have a sudden change of mind in the spring. It feels awkward to say “please go away - it will save us money.”

@BigPapiofthree The previous answer re: checking sent SAT scores is the correct one. I checked the new site today to confirm that D’s scores were sent. It took 2 weeks, so not bad at all.

Will be sending transcripts next week. Office at D’s school was closed for 4th of July week.

D still has made little progress on her essay. She has a great topic, but just can’t get it written. Her first draft deadline is tomorrow so she may be stuck at home all weekend getting it done as my deadlines are firm. Yes, I’m helicoptering this process (though I’m not otherwise a helicopter parent).

No grandparent drama here.

And no stress here. I really, really like every school on her list and the finances will work out for at least 1. So no bad results possible. D is stressed as she doesn’t enjoy writing essays. They take her a long time. But no stress about going to college. D knows she will be going to college somewhere and that’s good enough for her. Easy kid.

I’m stressed B/c I’ve been on my phone on CC for a week. Ready to get home, so I can do some real college-y stuff.

Also, no internet, so getting very close to our max data for the month which ends tomorrow. Talk about stress!

Got our CWID from Bama and sent scores. Gotta figure out the transcript now. Anyone do anything OTHER than have their school send it directly?

@2muchquan the 2 apps that D is currently working on allow self-reporting and a scanned copy of the official or unofficial. Still need at least 1 official to do either. Not sure if Bama allows those.

I have an official scan, but peeps said I should have It sent directly from school. Maybe I’ll have D call.

@2muchquan - Yes. Our school puts the transcript in a school envelope and seals it with a large school sticker. I have 4 transcripts sitting in DH’s office right now waiting for DS to apply to more schools. We will address them as needed.

@BigPapiofthree - You can go out the mybama and see if they have recvd them. DS’s scores and trascript have been recvd.

@jeepgirl - It sort of depends on the school and when they download them. For example I sent DS’s ACT score to both UA and Ole Miss. UA has recvd it but Ole Miss only downloads on Mondays.

@2muchquan I looked it up and the way I read it they want it sent directly by the school.

“Have your most recent official high-school transcript sent to us along with official transcripts from any other high school(s) attended”. If you are concerned about not having it before school starts again maybe have D call and see if they will accept the scan until an official replacement arrives in a couple of months.

On another note, MIT sent an invitation for their WISE (Weekend Immersiion in Science and Engineering) program. I know you were looking for fly-ins and this just came a couple of days ago. Your question made me think of it because they are accepting scanned copies of the transcript with this app.

@Ynotgo I would send the ACT and the subject tests and possibly the higher of the two SAT scores. It certainly wouldn’t hurt to show high scores in two different test formats.

@Mom2aphysicsgeek I sympathize with your stress. I feel real nostalgia for the 80s when I could afford the full COA of my state school by working food service jobs.

Safeties: Still working on these. State flagship is an admissions and financial safety - due to stats she’d get full tuition and possibly more - but it’s not a “love thy safety.” I have high hopes for a WUE school as a true safety on every level. The remainder of our college visits will be done by the end of the month and hopefully that piece will fall into place.

@MichiganGeorgia, according to mybama they have not received the sat scores yet. College board shows sent. I am assuming it will take a few days to post…I hope…

@deborahb, thanks for your post #9532 (back several pages, I’m so behind) giving more detailed description of TU. I haven’t seen a lot of posts about the school so always interested in reading people’s impression or experience about the school.
After reading a couple of your posts about TU, we decided to put the school on our radar and will do more research.

@itsgettingreal17, you wrote in post #9533:

can you elaborate on why, in your opinion, TU is not a true honors program compare to other ones? Thanks.

Stress Honestly I’m not that stressed about this right now. I’m sure I will be when S17 isn’t working on applications as fast as I would like, or we are waiting on the results. Right now there isn’t much to be done except more researching as S17 is away at camp. And I’m enjoying the conversation. I’m having more fun here than getting through my to-do list.

Grandparents Was thinking about this more and I realized why parents don’t have a clue how much things changes. They didn’t really have a clue what it was like for most students at the time. My father & my older brother both got into college by someone pulling strings. I was only told when I visited in May that my older brother never filled in one application (in the early 80’s). He wanted a gap year. My parents told him they wouldn’t pay for college unless he went to university right out of H.S, a decision my parents later regretted. When he hadn’t done anything about college apps, H.S. guidance counselor called up a Large Private Research University & convinced them to take him. Full pay of course. I didn’t know they could do that? My brother was very similar to S17, high test scores… grades all over the map. He never graduated, but he has been successful in life in a way no one would have ever predicted.

And then I only applied to one school. I figured out how to graduate H.S. a year early, and decided to do it IF I could get admitted to this one school. (A UC) I got admitted to that school, graduated H.S. early. It was not anywhere as stressful or time consuming as most students do now.

Stress- I don’t find the whole process stressful, it is getting my DD to realize that she has to do her part! My DD is what causes stress at our house. She has been able to get by doing the bare minimum for her entire life. She is just lucky that she is smart. It is now catching up with her and we are trying to teach her now, so it is not a problem in College!

For those stressing about apps, I can relate. My S14 could lead seminars in Procrastination 101!!! His senior year, the first application was sent in on 12/8. It was due on 12/1 but that was the year of the common ap crashes and the deadlines were extended. From there, the next batch was due on 01/01 so we threatened no going out for New Years Eve until the apps were submitted (since midnight was his goal). They were done as we were about to go
out to dinner at 7pm (deadline beat by 29 hours)!! For the final batch which were due 01/15, I gave in and bribed him with his own array of home made sweets and they were submitted on 01/14 (24 hours to spare). UGH!
