We are going to visit Georgia State tomorrow. DS is still dragging his feet on the Ole Miss scholarship essay. I haven’t told him yet that if he applies to Georgia State he is going to have to write another essay…
Is anyone doing any CLEP tests? I am thinking about having both DS17 & DS19 take the Biology one. In case they go to a school that takes CLEP.
^^ I think D17 would scream if I told her she has to take more tests. She already has to do the SAT II tests later this year, and potentially the SAT again if she doesn’t hit the cutoff for NMF.
I think taking the CLEP depends on which school she ends up going to-if they let you clep out of a lot of classes, she’d probably do it, but in that case we’d be looking at next spring and summer, after she’s decided which school, before/if she takes them.
1 more day - to see SAT & Subject Test scores from June. Good luck to all who took them We are hoping only 1 more test to go with Physics in Oct. Just too many tests IMO that these kids need to take. Thanks for all the college tour reports - thinking of adding Lehigh - anyone check it out already for engineering?
MOD Hope you have better luck with that once a week college discussion. We tried it early on, but I couldn’t possibly wait when something ‘popped up’. Plus, she would bring up her senior friends and what colleges they were accepted to, and away I went. Deadlines are looming. No way. I just quit now when asked to go away.
@MotherOfDragons I hope your d feels better soon! It stinks when kids are sick away from us.
I woke to 22 overnight texts from my d She reacted to something in the supposedly dairy-free dinner she ate last night and is feeling awful. This is her first reaction in almost a year. Sigh. She’s going to skip class today due to the pain and nausea.
No snail mail here. D says she’s only receiving email from the schools she has contacted. American continues with their thrice-weekly emails.
@MotherOfDragons Best wishes with the fever situation. Hopefully it’s just a passing cloud.
Fevers mean high alert in our home. DS19 is asplenic (no spleen). So a fever of 101 means emergency room - no exceptions. Luckily it’s only happened once or twice.
@STEM2017 Did you hear back from UA about use of an unofficial transcript? If that works, when is acceptance expected?
Our HS is shutting down for 10 days due to construction, so I’m ordering a handful of official Ts just to have. We’re lucky to have a large school that is open in summer. I did confirm Ds GC is not answering emails though.
Looking for info on URichmond. We have not visited. Wondering if a local interview with an alum counts nearly as much as an on-campus interview? Trying to determine the importance of a visit once school starts, especially since we are looking at 2-4 visits already (one or two fly-ins) during this time.
@2muchquan URichmond is currently in the BOD. I’m trying to figure out how to do a drexel/UR/UMDCP trip for D17 this fall. Those three feel close in my head, but may not be in actuality.
H says don’t worry about it, just apply to them all and then make a trip if/when she’s accepted. I’m like, what if she doesn’t like any place she gets in?
@2muchquan – S14 applied to U Richmond – beautiful campus! If you can’t visit, I would think that an alumni interview would demonstrate interest adequately! On a different note, my S14, was offered merit everywhere he applied except Richmond!
Hugs to @MotherOfDragons and @WhereIsMyKindle’s DDs. It’s no fun being sick, and especially away from mom. Sending healing thoughts.
Is there something that can be done to emphasize the importance of “no dairy” to the food services staff, WhereIsMyKindle? Or, is taking the lactaid pills helpful to her if she can’t be sure what’s in the food?
@MotherOfDragons – that trip is doable in 2-3 days I think – just be aware that there can be lots of traffic and congestion around Philly & DC – try to avoid rush hour if you can. Otherwise I think it is reasonable to make it to all 3 if you have 3 days or so.
Sorry to hear about the sick kids away from home. D is also not feeling well with an ear infection. She’s been to the university health center once already and is going back today to get some drops. Hopefully she starts to feel better soon. She’s been a real trooper (and stubborn) in trying to not let it interfere with the program but had to miss class yesterday beside the pain was so bad.
Pitt still hasn’t gotten D’s SAT scores but Ole Miss got them early last week. Ugh!
Going through admissions requirements, just a note to carefully keep track of all the different ways schools want transcripts - scanned unofficial, mailed official, SRAR, Naviance. Then there are the common app schools that say don’t send us LOR, we don’t want it; send LOR through Naviance, and just give us the names and email addresses of your recommenders. I think it’s time for another spreadsheet!
My contribution to the jokes: A neutrino walks into a bar. “What would you like to drink?” asks the bartender. “Oh, nothing”, comes the reply, “just passing through.”
@MichiganGeorgia Dd will be taking at minimum both CLEP econ exams b/c everywhere she is applying accepts both. Depending on where she decides to attend, she might take bio, American history, gov’t, and possibly chem.
@MotherOfDragons Define “close.” We lived in Richmond for several years before we moved here, and I personally wouldn’t call any of those locations close. Traffic between Richmond and DC can be an absolute nightmare. If you drive, I would definitely take 301 vs. 95. Amtrak might also be an option b/c trains are constantly running between Richmond and Baltimore (though I don’t know how you would get from the Richmond train station(s). The locations are not “convenient” and we always had a car.)
UR is a beautiful campus, though. We attended multiple functions there.
