Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@curiositycat333 Yep! All typed in. There were drop downs for categories and ‘generic’ course names. But then it asks for exact info from transcript too. Plus, if you go by Semesters you have 2 entries for every class. Fun!

@LoveTheBard - My bad, I meant to say a conservative site, since they are critical of the school.

So, as one of the newbies here, I have a couple comments.

(1) Wow you guys post a lot! And it seems like a lot of you are able to keep up with every post! I’m impressed!

(2) Thanks to you, I’m now a Pokemon Go addict! I hadn’t even heard of it until I started following this thread. There certainly have been mentions of it in the press, but I don’t think I would have paid attention had I not heard of it here. My kids are not interested in doing it. D17 humors me by collecting Pokestop goodies for me while I’m driving. My S enjoys taking me for Pokemon drives every now and then so I can collect stuff while he’s in the driver’s seat! Our dog is getting more exercise!

@SoccerMomGenie Oh oh! Oliver Stone would NOT approve! >:/

The media’s hyperventilation over the game is more entertaining than the game.

Today I added a new column to The Spreadsheet (which will go in The Binder). Calculation of total cost to attend for four years of the schools that he’s looking at so far. I even made a graph out of that data, which S17 found pretty interesting. There is quite a difference from the highest to lowest cost, and I’m not sure it’s worth it for engineering. Much for S to think about.

S17 did not take the new SAT but did take two subject tests in June. One of his schools isn’t accepting the old SAT, so it looks like he will go with the ACT.

That Case closed this week seems dumb to me. A group of students were upset that they were housing about 2000 police officers who came to town for the convention. The police officers wouldn’t be policing on the Case campus which is about 4-5 miles from the convention center where the RNC is being held. No info that Case would be targeted. Just needed to find a place where a large number of officers could be housed (with pretty much every hotel within 50+ miles of downtown totally booked). Shuttled from campus to downtown for shifts during the convention and then back to campus. So instead the university closed and all activities on campus were canceled this week.

Clearly they need more safe spaces.

I didn’t expect to be able to see the info, I was hoping to see an indication that the transcript was received and matched. Kind of like when you know the test scores have been received. I did see today that SRAR is strongly encouraged. I may have D email to understand what “strongly encouraged” really means. (Saves admissions department work or affects merit aid chances…)

I’ve enjoyed reading the discussion on EFC calculations. I’ve been running the same financial numbers for schools and am surprised at the very wide ranges I get back. I do believe different schools place different weight on different things. I feel lucky that my D17 goes to a private school where she receives financial aid so I have years of experience filling out the financial forms! I think that they are very complicated and require a lot of detail and diligence to complete.

Regarding spending money at college, I anticipate my D17 having a job on campus which will be her spending money. She doesn’t spend any money now it seems so I don’t anticipate her going too crazy.

I’m very interested in the Boy Scout camping award and plan to look into it! My D19 received the Camp Rat award for 100% attendance at the campouts for his troop so I think he has at least 125 nights through the years!

@longwood - Wow. Which school isn’t accepting the old SAT? That doesn’t seem fair to this years class.

I’ll have to quote @WhereIsMyKindle

S17 received 760 and S19 received 680 on the physics subject test.
S17 took most tests cold and now has eclectic collection of scores 8-} with math II 800 and Chem 670.
S19’s freshman physics class didn’t even cover the projectile motion (he claims.) I joked his class was a non-algebra based physics course (cf. non-calculus based physics course) as most students had not learned trigonometry nor algebra II. It is really hard to explain vector decomposition of force or velocity without trigonometry.

@MichiganGeorgia -Virginia Tech. For S17 it’s fine because he is going with the ACT anyway.

That makes way too much sense! You can always ask hailtopitt1787 on the Pitt forum. And, ask if subject tests are considered in the scholarship process.

I must say, I’m very proud of the end result of the SRAR. It looks sweet.

I’m looking at class schedules to see how we can work out visits to far-away schools. Two so far have Arabic scheduled MWF and IR classes scheduled TTh ~X( With flight times and D’s uni schedule (MWThF) she’ll miss 2 days of classes for each! Grrrrrrrrrrr

I sure hope language class sections at the driving distance schools are either on Tuesdays or held in the afternoon on Mondays.

I have a vegetarian too but she has made an effort to not compare food service (or dorm quality to be fair) at various schools as she wants to decide based on academics. I told her that’s fine as long as she can be happy eating ice berg lettuce salads and pasta with tomato sauce for a year  What she really wants is a school that has smoothies covered on the dining plan (which it seems like they usually aren’t) for breakfast, salad bar for lunch, and a few veggie ethnic options for dinner but I guess we’ll cross that bridge later. A few schools she is applying to are changing food service companies this year so even if it used to be veggie friendly it could always change.

@gator88NE @stem2017 We are in the it’s “our search” camp with you. These are children and for the same reason I am against ED, they don’t know what they don’t know. My son was certain that he would attend school in the Boston area and didn’t need to see schools anywhere else. I took him to most schools in the Boston area and the outskirts of Boston and he found many he loved. I waited a few months and extended the visits to another state and then added in another state. He found a school in each of these states that he loved. Imagine that. He’s a child and I will provide guidance and make sure that he doesn’t limit his options. That makes it “our search”.

@SRK2017 Great SAT II scores. If he is going to take another SAT II, some schools with pre-med programs have preferred a language so if he’s up to another test language would be a good choice. The language SAT IIs are only given once a year (November?). Honestly, it’s not going to make or break an app to have another SAT II so unless the school specifies a language or a humanities SAT II, probably time better spent on apps and remaining solid through first semester of senior year.

@MotherOfDragons So glad to hear your daughter’s fever broke! Hope she is feeling better and turns the corner soon.

@2muchquan Sorry, I don’t mean to get personal. Your leg cramp(s) have been disturbing me. If you know if was from exercise or have a good idea the cause, then I hope the cramps resolve soon. If the cramps are odd to you, consider getting it checked out. One of my closest friends had leg cramps and was a few hours away from a doctor’s appointment. If only she had been able to get there sooner. Who would tell us funny jokes? Loved the southerner in a bar joke tonight.

@Stem2017 Calculus II Advanced Honors - I would go with Advanced but you should check your school’s profile. At my son’s school, Advanced is a higher level than honors.

@flatkansas Wow! That is too bad because the college process is, as we know, greatly impacted by finances. Our college counselors include that in the profiles we put together before they even have that first conversation with the students. It’s a very important aspect so that they do not recommend any schools on the list the family can’t afford. What’s the point? The kids should be excited about their college experience and it’s unfortunate the college counselors do not find out what the budget is from the beginning.

@picklesarenice My kid has a very similar divergence with respect to SAT/ACT. I think that CB needs more long term data before it can generate accurate concordance figures. I also have yet to see %iles for the essay.

@srk2017 That article doesn’t ring true to me. We were supposed to have toured CWRU yesterday but it was cancelled around 10 days ago. The email we got said that they had security concerns regarding the RNC, especially given the then recent shootings in TX. So they were closing the campus for the entire week. I later heard that they were housing several hundred police or guardsmen on campus.

We have been on the road visiting campuses, reports coming soon. Congrats to all on their SAT results! D17 got good scores on two SAT II subject tests so she is done with those!

@mamaedefamilia Case Western closed because of concerns by students/faculty with the university agreeing to house about police officers who came to town from across the country for the RNC.

And now it looks like one school on the list may not have enough Arabic after all :frowning: I’ve been tracking courses actually scheduled (vs courses listed in the catalog) for four semesters. Courses have either not appeared or have been cancelled.

D will have to check with Ohio State that she’d be allowed into grad-level seminars because that’s the only way OSU will have enough Arabic for her.

Fudge fudge fudgy fudge

Definitely time for bed!

Phew! I’m don SRARing for the day. UofSC only has you self-report senior year, and allows upload of a official/unofficial transcript for the rest. But the 3 LORs, 3 essays, and Resume are going to need to be addressed before we submit that one. Resume is almost there…needs formatting help. Essays…better get started (I think she’s reviewed them)!
