Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

While nothing is truly free, I pay careful attention to what requires additional cost. I’m ok with laundry not being free. But I am absolutely not ok with tutoring being extra. Definitely ask about that one no matter how smart you think your child is or how successful they were in high school.

@mtrosemom --yes! Sorry for the confusion. We have not visited any southern schools but I recall hearing about the laundry from friends applying to Davidson.

My daughters were taught early on that free never is, and my oldest is actively annoyed that every. single. college. tour committed the same error.

I suspect that it comes from traditional-age upper-middle-class students being the ones who generally give the tours—it’s free to them!

But to keep things light, a joke, in the vein of the one I posted yesterday(?):

“What would you like to drink?” asks the bartender. A faster-than-light particle walks into a bar.

Re: SAT reporting - to my understanding, you can’t separate the essay from the rest of the test. I didn’t see that as an option. And unlike, ACT, you can’t delete a score, only score choice, which isn’t the same thing. If a school wants all scores, there is no way to pretend the test wasn’t taken.

@dfbdfb …Can’t wait to hear what you think about Alabama!

@snoozn good to know there are engineering schools that don’t require sat subject matter tests. Son19 is setting his sights on some reach schools though, I’ll have to see what they require. Its going to be a different college search with him, he is open to looking at school all over the country. Yikes.

regarding free: Disney does “free” dining every now and then. It’s soooooo not free. I don’t know how they’re able to fool so many people into thinking it is, but it’s not. You’re paying. Plus you’re eating like a Roman emperor with all that entails (hello indigestion).

Davidson-the first year D17 did Duke TiP it was at Davidson, and they had laundry service for the camp. It was pretty awesome-some of her stuff came back cleaner (and pressed!) than when it left :D.

Unfortunately for her that was the year that I stopped doing her laundry because she would pull clean laundry out of the dryer to get what she wanted, and leave the rest LYING ON THE FLOOR!!! D18 ended up doing her own laundry the year after that for the exact same reason. shakes head.

Signed D17 up for Math 2 and Biology for the Sat 2 in October. Ordered the 2 Barrons books (thanks everyone for the recommendation), and created a timeline for deadlines for all 9 schools we have on her list. I did this thing where it said “October 1 (70 days from today) SAT II tests”. I think telling her how many days from today the deadlines are helps her to wrap her head around it better in terms of using her time wisely.

Hopefully the timeline (emailed to her and H) will make it so I don’t have to nag daily. I can just go over it every Sunday and say, “what’s the progress on the UA app?” or “how far into the Barron’s book did you get this week?”

Man, she’s going to be so thrilled to get to next semester when all the nagging is pretty much done (I hope).

My favorite jokes are blonde jokes:

Why did the blonde get fired from the orange juice factory? She couldn’t concentrate.

UChicago is a stalker. It never stops. UCh and RIT are the 2 schools that made me tell Dd to not dare check the box for info.

Re: Case-- Ds didn’t do anything other than fill out the application. No visit. No interview. Nothing. He was still accepted and with one of their largest scholarships, so I am not so sure how much interest really plays a role.

Got a response back from Bama that didn’t answer the actual question.

@Mom2aphysicsgeek I wanted to give you a Like and a Helpful on that last post. No can do! Funny about 'Bama…I hope you thought so. Smh.

We got a lot of U Chicago stuff, don’t know what D got on her emails. We got what everyone got, mail wise.

Do any of your kids get a lot materials from military academies? D also got a lot of them…wonder if that is because of her road race/swimming results? She considered that option briefly. Anybody considering those schools?

@srk2017, D took US history and the three subject tests your S took. She is planning STEM major --she took it after they finished AP history. A lot of kids in her class did.

We have been using the subject test 4 free score send, so CWRU already got a bunch of her scores. Does that also consider interest?

We are going up to Fordham - LC next Wednesday for their visit event. It’s just a 2 hour bus ride from Philly. I’m wondering if my D will be more interested in NYC schools as we’ve been binge watching Felicity the last couple of weeks.

DS17 sent an email to Mississippi State with his ACT score, unweighted and weighted GPA’s, and how his weighted GPA was scored and asking if they recalculate GPA’s using only core classes for scholarships. The website does not specify.
They sent back a very nice email explaining that for admission they use the unweighted GPA and for scholarships they use the weighted GPA assuming it’s higher.(not sure how it could be lower but they say it is in some cases).
They do not recalculate GPA’s they use the one on the transcript. Which is good news for him.

Our transcript has 3 GPAs, w, u, UC

@Dolemite I don’t think my DD has ever seen Felicity! She loved NYC and Columbia so maybe she’ll apply to Fordham just to have another NYC option. She didn’t like NYU which she was going to apply to. It’s a great location for Poli Sci/IR.

@SincererLove Navy has been sending letters to S17 who has no interest to open the them.

His best friend is applying to Air Force Academy. (I hope he got the scores he wanted. I had a test prep session for him and gave a few test prep books.) There are always several kids in the area who apply to service academies and I know one eagle scout who went to West Point last year, more kids went to Air Force as it is local. I do not personally know anyone who went to Naval Academy but I assume there are kids who make it there.

D gets the military academy mailings. Those are odd!

S got mailings from almost all of the Academies including the Coast Guard (not the AF though). He was not interested and did not open any of them. I will say that Annapolis and West Point are beautiful areas.

Congrats to all on the great test scores. QOTD: (I am way behind so it may be old…) D and I share her college email address - we made up a junk one just for this purpose. She is being stalked by University of Chicago and by WUofSL – so many paper solicitations from both as well. She also gets from Rice, Oberlin, and West Virginia on a daily basis. We also laugh at the Yale mailings - um…no she is not a perfect candidate

D has had calls and talked to the Marines and the Navy – she is not interested but they keep talking. She was amused and humored them on the phone during their second call.

We have not received any military academy mailings. Son17 would probably do well in the military other than the whole boot camp thing. I think that would break him, lol. "Wait, I need to get up early, organize all my stuff, work all day, eat cafeteria food, sleep in a bunk, and no free Wi-fi or air conditioning??? "

My dad was an air force jet pilot for a while and my son found that intriguing when he was younger. He has the reflexes and stomach for it, just not the drive it takes to get it done. It’s OK, neither me or my brother ever wanted to carry on the legacy of family pilots.

@RightCoaster definitely check the requirements. Many schools (most), engineering or not, do not require the SAT II tests. Lottery schools, yes. Schools that are reaches for many, may or may not require but may consider. Some schools own’t even look at them though. Really depends on what your list looks like but I personally think that freshman year is too early to worry about those, depending on the course load maybe next spring at the end of sophomore year but that’s lots of time to plan!

@MotherOfDragons the Free Dining cracks me up. I think we did that twice. Once, when the youngest were still “disney kid” age, it was a godsend as they were human garbage cans, we made a point to choose buffets and non kid menu places to maximize it. Another year we worked it so part of us were on it and another room not. But since then, forget it. Now we are DVC so save real money on food that way. LOL!
