Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

QOTA

Academic program. First foray is occurring as I type. College Quest at Western Washington University, International Energy and Environmental Policy. Not competitive or free lol, but pretty darn reasonable price wise I thought. Does come with 1 college credit that is theoretically transferrable. Hoping it helps determine major direction and area of interest but even if not, it sounded interesting to him and a great way to get a feel for what living on campus, in a dorm, roommates etc will be like.

Day one report is “pretty rad” and that the professor is “awesome” so I will count it as a win. It is fairly structured and camp like in that respect. Today was all economics and he loved it. Apparently his class (there are 6 classes, all different) has the most homework but he seems quite happy so far. Great ratio in his class, 5:1. We will see what he says on Friday.

@VickiSoCal , does your D17 plan to swim in college? D is not that fast, D3 has some interests, mostly LAC. But she doesn’t want to. If she lowers her 100 fly for 2.5 second, U Chicago coach will call, instead of “call me maybe”

@SincererLove She makes varsity at a craptastics sports high school by the skin of her teeth. She LOVES teaching and coaching.

@Ynotgo, I am assuming that @dustypig is using the uncapped UC GPA. Cal, and UCLA look at the uncapped. The rest of the UC’s use the formula you described…My S has a 4.54 Uncapped W UC GPA. I think you are both right.

@Ynotgo I have no idea. That’s what’s reported on her transcript as her “A-G GPA.”

QOTD D is only looking at schools on a semester system.

QOTA Last summer she went to Concordia Language Villages for Arabic (definitely not free) and this summer she’s at Ole Miss Summer College (free w ACT/GPA).

@dustypig Yes ask her IB Art Teacher for recommendation and to help her build a portfolio. Also look around there are often portfolio days at many Art Schools. Check out http://www.portfolioday.net For the portfolio day near you. Additionally this will give you an idea about various schools in the area.

Has she won any art awards while in H.S? If not she should look around. The National PTA sponsors the Reflections program that is a great one to try and enter. Again another question to ask her art teacher.

Wow very high GPA, she is a very accomplished young woman. I bet lots of places will love to have her. It’s not a big deal but I’m not sure you are calculating UC GPA correctly. That is probably a 10-12 weighted, not quite the same thing. See https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/

Reminder to self… read all the messages below before posting. I learned something new and didn’t need to repeat what others had already said. Since my S17 isn’t trying for either UCLA or Berkley I wasn’t aware they used uncapped GPA.

I am confused about UC gpa. our transcript doesn’t show it, shows only state GPA.5 out 6 courses in 10th are honors and honors in 10th and all 6 in 11th are honors (IB). So it will be the GPA if all are A? he has 6 subjects each year and all are UC approved.

I like California. I went to USCali. But WTH? Why can’t you guys speak the same language as the rest of us when it comes to college search?! If you guys would just look exclusively at OOS schools, the rest of us would really appreciate it.

ETA: 8-} =))

@2muchquan – I am (confused) with you. If I read more closely, I am guessing I would learn what the uncapped UC GPA is…but since son abandoned Berkeley, I will not trouble myself.

@srk2017, UC gives a 5.0 to approved honors and ap courses in 10-12 grade…At our school, some honor classes are not weighted until 11th grade. You need to check with your high school report or course catalogue to see what classes get a 5.0 A. At our school, only AP classes in 10th are weighted, and only a few of the honor classes get added for 11th…I do not have experience with IB designation…Sorry.

UC GPA =10 and 11 grade only (4 x #As + 3x#Bs etc) then add 1 point for each semester of AP/honors but maximum of 8) divide by number of classes.

D is (16×4 + 7x3 + 8)/23 = 4.04

Ds uncapped UC GPA is

(16×4 + 7x3 + 16)/23 = 4.39

Alright…in for a penny, in for a pound…

@VickiSoCal – do they only include the four academic subjects plus foreign language in that calculation? I am guessing that a full year course is counted twice? 23 is a bit confusing but perhaps some class was only one semester?

DD took the following classes in 10/11 grade, only the starred ones are UC weighted

US Government (online, one semester)
Lang Arts2 H
Spanish 3
*Chemistry H
Precalc H
*AP Euro
*AP Art History
*IB Theory of Knowledge
*IB Spanish 4
*IB History of the Americas
*IB Lang Arts 3
*IB Math

So 12 UC weighted semesters.
I have no idea why chem h is weighted but Precalc H is not.

@VickiSoCal - 4 out of 6 courses in 10th are honors classes for DS and all 6 IB classes are honors in junior year. he has As in all. So what will be his GPA then?

@srk2017 were all 4 tenth grade honors classes designated as UC weighted courses?

@srk2017 – is this one of the new SAT math problems?

Can I guess?

Capped: 4.33
Uncapped: 4.83

I probably failed that one!

Oh no: I just saw Vicki’s follow-up question. Didn’t realize that the UCs could determine which honors courses are honors courses. I give up.

IB and AP classes are uc weighted but most general sophomore level honors courses, like English are not.
