Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@kac425 …I think mine only slept because of the Phenergan. I’m an NP and I have a horrific fear of aspiration from post-op vomiting and I’ve also taken care of patients in ICU with post-op extraction infections that seemed to start after post-op vomiting. :open_mouth:

I gave her a 1/2 tab of Phenergan when she got home, some soft foods and a prescription pain med and she had a nice long sleep (with me sitting nearby!).

@Mom2aphysicsgeek is there no way for her to study IR/language in college and then maybe after graduating work overseas where she could practice her language skills while earning $$. She’d probably get more fluent actually living there right?

I’m clueless in this area though. My kids barely tolerate spanish in HS, ha.

Is anyone interested in German studies? Just now U Pitt sent an email about their full tuition scholarship for German Studies major.

@srk2017 …we will be awaiting that email for sure! It would be a minor though for D. Interesting!

“Apply ED to school 1, and EA to 1 backup. If that doesn’t work, 2 more apps RD and that’s it.”

Another strategy our daughter used was to apply EA to her second choice school; she got in, so there was only one more application to write, to her first choice school.

@Mom2aphysicsgeek Looks like SUNY Binghamton requires ACT + Writing and has an Early Action deadline of Nov 1, but fortunately they give until Dec 1 to provide test scores and transcripts. So I probably shouldn’t change anything just to be safe. But it was a great suggestion, thanks!

Still waiting for NMC to release state cutoff numbers before sending any apps! I wish he could send one or two now. S is still working on his CA essay. He has 1.5 “good” paragraphs, so there is still work to be done. The good paragraphs really are good. It took a lot of rewriting.

S is off to a national youth bridge tournament in DC today. Four kids are representing our local club, and the local adult club and the district office gave them scholarships that about cover the cost of the flight and hotel. :slight_smile: This is the first time he is traveling without an adult. One of the girls in the group (graduated senior) did the tournament last year so she is the seasoned guide. They have time Sunday to do some sightseeing before they have to fly home. I’m still laughing about going to a bridge tournament! I expect he will have a great time.

Don’t you have to be at least 65 to play bridge? :slight_smile:

We are such a bunch of fixers here, aren’t we? I’m wandering around doing dishes and thinking “where is someplace someone could study Russian?” I have no idea, but I can’t help thinking about trying to find a solution :). My mind wanders to Canada, because according to some people, you can see Russia from there :).

My MIL, FIL, H and his BIL are ferociously good bridge players. It’s so mathy to me that I just stink at it, and I’ve tried. I’ve volunteered to be the permanent “dummy” of the family :)) But even then I don’t know how to bid right.

I need to tell D to let me proofread before she sends anything in. It may earn me a dollar in the swear jar.

OK maybe it’s the privilege of not needing to penny pinch & living in CA. But I don’t use frozen veggies for ice packs. First because I never buy the stuff. Second because they become soft & yucky fast. Particularly if they haven’t been put back in the freezer quickly. I have a few of those frozen gel packs made for the purpose in the freezer. I’m the one who’s needed them the most in my family. You can get ones that are made of little beads & are softer and malleable. Cost more money initially but I find them useful in the long run. And honestly crushed ice in a ziplock bag works better IMO if going for cheep.

I’d never get either kid to put a bra on their face. Honestly I don’t remember DD’s wisdom teeth extraction being that bad. Maybe a day of being really uncomfortable and then a few days of soreness. But then all kids are different. :))

California has the most amazing fresh vegetables. I envy you @curiositycat333 , we loved eating out when we were there because everything was so good and so fresh.

@itsgettingreal17 I just wanted to make sure we didn’t miss a separate applications for scholarships, like other schools have.

@STEM2017 @Mom2aphysicsgeek beat me to the suggestion. You may be able to change the registration online or, you can on day of if there is space. I’m not sure if there really are space issues or not, I just know that’s what it said when I contemplated switching S17 in June (tried to get him to take it without the writing due to the fractured wrist but he opted to wait).

I feel your pain, we have at least one mid Oct deadline and ideally I’m sending all scores on 10/1. Which would mean in our case I’m sending older tests. Unfortunately 2 of his schools want writing. We do have previous sittings that we can send but of course the better writing and English is the first sitting and the better composite the 2nd. Neither are great mind you. The schools that want writing do not superscore and one of them has the mid October date. Grrr. For the superscore ones we should be able to see what the section and composites are at least and know which of the 2 tests to send or if we need to send both and then simply send sept scores as soon as we can, assuming they are an actual improvement.

S17 is thinking about switching from Honors Spanish to Honors Engineering. I know some schools like to see four years of a language, but Engineering is relevant to his intended major (ME), so wouldn’t that be better? I guess I’ll have to slog through school websites to see if any actually require four years of a language.

@WhereIsMyKindle and @Mom2aphysicsgeek
S also has peanut and tree nut allergies. The severity of the reaction depends on the type of nut he’s exposed to, with cashews being the worst. He isn’t great about keeping Benadryl and Epi close by at all times, so I worry about college. His seasonal allergies are tree-related so spring & fall are tough. I may need to push for an air conditioned dorm.

@mamaedefamilia
What a great summary of WUSL! They’ve been our stalker, constantly sending emails & pamphlets. It looks like an amazing school, but quite a high reach for S. Still, I haven’t unsubscribed because it’s nice to dream I-) I-)

Re Wisdom Teeth & Surgery - D15 had 3 surgeries during HS - toe surgery for a bone growth, extraction of two wisdom teeth and an emergency appendectomy. The appendectomy was about three weeks into her senior year, but thank goodness it happened then and not during her freshman year of college b/c she had atypical symptoms and it ended up rupturing.
My 2 pieces of advice to all facing wisdom teeth extractions -

  1. Don’t let them overdo it for a full week - even if they feel fine.
  1. Ask for liquid pain med prescriptions so it’s easy to reduce the dosage and not as tough on the stomach. Using liquid Advil or Tylenol can also help reduce the chance of nausea.

I agree with @carachel2 - keep them in sight for the first 24 hours JIC.

Wisdom Teeth- my oldest 2 DD’s have had theirs out and it was fairly easy. They both had IV sedation and were back to new in a couple of days. I highly recommend having all 4 out. I had mine out young as well. You only want to go through it one time.

@jmek15 At my son’s school Honors Engineering and AP Physics are scheduled at the same time so he had to pick one - how does this make any sense??? He chose AP Physics. In your case I would be careful because some very selective schools require 4 years of foreign language. Make sure to read the fine print of your favorite schools!

@saillakeerie You have a kid at tOSU, correct? Any tips or things we should do on our visit. I’ve never been on campus before. I’ve mentioned it to friends and some of them say they will never speak to me again :slight_smile:

@2muchquan In my quick review of ACT requirements at favorite schools I saw that tOSU requires ACT + Writing.

Someone please correct me if I’m wrong.

@STEM2017 Thanks. That’s one thing we are not tracking on our spreadsheet. D17 took ACT with Writing both times, and both times got a 29. We were initially kind of shocked at the low writing score, but came to realize it’s pretty good. So, whether or not a schools want’s it with Writing, they’re getting it that way!

We are big shoppers @ our farmers market (NorCal). We have two markets next to each other, one is for Asian vegetables and other for regular stuff. You can even by meats and seafood from farmers and fisherman. Spent $100 last weekend for fruits and veggies + jumbo eggs (none of them are organic) and we are a family of 3. People wonder if we really eat all that stuff :))
