Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@dfbdfb we also have Gloom! I have to wear reading glasses to read the font, though, it’s insanely small. And We Didn’t Play Test This At All-that one cracks me up. We’ve been playing Exploding Kittens as well.

We also have Cards Against Humanity, but we save that for the grownups. Some of whom have to clear their internet history after looking up some of the terms. My SIL (no kids) decided to play that game with the girls when the girls were 12 and 13, resulting in us being VERY angry at her for a while.

I have an original Dark Tower game from the 80’s. I played the daylights out of that thing!

https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/30/dark-tower

I can’t get anyone to play it with me now, though. They say it’s too slow…

Checked the credit card, and excluding the medicine she had to pay for, she did good for 12 days. She only spent $50. She did not do nearly as good at UT or last summer.

@whataboutcollege WHAT?!! How long was the program? Did it require the students to pay extra for everthing? D didn’t have to spend much because at all summer programs she’s done, the schools covered all the trips/entertainment, meals, snacks, etc. Mostly what D spends on is ordering pizza, school swag, and healthier snacks than what they provide. I send her with quarters for laundry.

L- “thinking” about working on Extended Essay (this involves re-organizing desk in Pinterest perfect fashion, making out extensive “to do” list involving said Extended Essay, making beautiful calligraphy titles for the notes page of her EE…and so forth. You get the picture. :))

@lkg4answers B, E, and F. Balance. Usually we have traveling in there as well (family vacation), but this year D needs the time to work on her essays, so that is our G (working on college apps).

On a somewhat related note, D finally decided where she wants to go for her graduation trip - South Africa! I already found a great package - 12 days exploring Capetown, Johannesburg, and Victoria Falls(Zimbabwe) with multi-day safari. I’ll book it once I get a better sense of where she’ll be going to college since I need to get the timing just right (after summer language institute but before move-in). We’re both very excited!

@itsgettingreal17 - May be we will join you on Africa trip  DS was asking about Australia/NZ or Europe or Africa.

@itsgettingreal17 @2muchquan @whataboutcollege My DDs program recommended $150/week. I was like there is no way she’ll need/spend that much. She spent right around that. The first 4 days of her trip weren’t the program and she was with her chaperone and 3 other kids from school and they went to NY and DC. All the food was covered but she bought some souvenirs and stuff. Then she didn’t like the food on campus that much so her and her friends ate off campus a lot. There was one shopping trip where she bought a tshirt and jeans. They did take them on trips that were paid for like an amusement park and NJ shore but she did have to pay for food for those. So all those things added up. I told her she has to be much more budget conscious in college.

We need to R for finding own research @ local univ or lab, S - science camps or competitions:-)

@STEM2017 We will just be getting back from the back 2-3 weeks before because of our Spring Break!

Mostly work this summer. Little bit of school and IB summer homework.

I think wisdom teeth will happen next summer. Dentist says they can wait and it feels like next summer will be less busy.

Poll:
E. Working
G. Other - band

Since DD’s current summer research program gives her a small stipend, can she call it her working experience? Otherwise, she has not worked other than few babysitting.

@itsgettingreal17 Well, I will say, “entertainment” and “South Bend, IN” are oxymorons. =)) I-) :-q

** foreign languages: ** My kid is one of the rare ones that likes them. She will have taken two languages all four years and intends to study at least one more in college. I will be encouraging her to take a linguistics course too.

** wisdom teeth: ** So far, no need for intervention. Her best friend just had hers out. Hope that all of your kids have speedy recoveries. @dfbdfb That story could be incorporated in a horror film!

** summer programs: ** My daughter did dance intensives through sophomore year and the last two summers she has worked at a private high school that offers academic enrichment programs for elementary and middle school kids.

@STEM2017 Imagine how enrollments would surge if AP exams could be taken on the beach!

D17 spent her summer
A. At a summer program offered at a local college no
B. At a summer program offered at a college away from home no
C. Traveling - mission trip, etc. yes. To SE Kentucky for a week.
D. Summer school (local or online at home) no
E. Working internship, Genetics Dept. at downtown children’s hospital
F. Hanging out with friends yes, especially BF
G. Other (please specify) college visits; week visiting grandma; long weekends at our cottage, homework, apps

I should add, if he/she is working, what type of job do they have?

@4beardolls According to tax laws that is called scholarship $$, not income. Seems like work to me, though.

Pitt’s school of A&S requires 3 year HS foreign language. D had 4 yrs of Spanish, but decided to start with German in college. She is also taking ASL. She figures a clinical pharmacist who can speak a bit of Spanish, German and ASL might be helpful.

When she got her wisdom teeth out she only got a prescription for pain medicine, not antibiotic as far as I remember.
