Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

D is thinking she may join the club sailing team if she goes to a school that has one, which would continue her nautical/boating experience.

@VickiSoCal I did that… I learned to Sail at girl scout camp (on the east coast). And I was in the Sailing team at University in the 80’s. I lOVED it. (And yes… that’s the one area I still volunteer for G.S…)

My D is one of the ones that loves language as well. Next year will be her 5th year of Latin and she looks forward to taking a new language in college.

She isn’t doing anything really exciting this summer. She has 2 jobs(cashier at a grocery store and works at a hot dog stand), a boyfriend, had her deviated septum fixed, finishing her college applications and college tours, and we are visiting the In-laws in Florida the week before school starts!

Leadership- My DD is actively involved in a few activities in school. She is a true leader and really has done an outstanding job at the positions that she has held. She is one of those ones that did start a club, but they really do meet often and do a lot of fun things.

** Poll **
A. At a summer program offered at a local college - No
B. At a summer program offered at a college away from home - No
C. Traveling - mission trip, etc. - Yes - a week of ** required ** volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity
D. Summer school (local or online at home) - Yes - dad’s ACT test prep
E. Working - No
F. Hanging out with friends - Yes
G. Other (please specify) - Learning to drive

@rightcoaster You’re right. Maybe Activity #10 on a “what the hell?” App.

@4beardolls I love your last post! I think you could try out a new career!

@itsgettingreal17 The program does not cover food for weekend :(( . Can you believe it? And all the trips/events (school will organize and have RAs going with students), you will need to take care of transportation costs and event fees yourself. So I think my D spend 150ish on transportion (subways and train tickets alone). Broadways tickets are never cheap. She didn’t buy any thing else except a key chain that looks exactly like our little dog. . I can imagine kids spend up to a very high amount of $$ for this 3 weeks.

Poll: Did your '17 child spend the summer

A. At a summer program offered at a local college: No
B. At a summer program offered at a college away from home: No
C. Traveling - mission trip, etc.: No
D. Summer school (local or online at home): No
E. Working: Yes, doing lab research with a mentor
F. Hanging out with friends: Sometimes, playing Diplomacy
G. Other (please specify): summer homework, visiting colleges, driving lessons. Haven’t seen much essay-writing yet.

Poll: Did your '17 child spend the summer

A. At a summer program offered at a local college: Yes (sports camp, 1 hour drive but will need to stay overnight there)
B. At a summer program offered at a college away from home: Yes (3wks)
C. Traveling - mission trip, etc.: No
D. Summer school (local or online at home): No
E. Working: No (can’t find a job because of the away programs. Tried multple places…)
F. Hanging out with friends: Yes
G. Other (please specify): Volunteering at her normal place and 1wk full time at special children’s summar camp. pre-season, drive my S20 around; being the second mom in the house.

Foreign languages: Ugh. Every single college that DS17 has applied to or is considering requires at least 1 year of foreign language in college(ok at UA he could do 6 hours of CS but it’s not the first CS classes that count and not realistic for him). He took 3 years of Latin which was a huge mistake…I am so happy DS19 is taking french.

A poll! I’m in:

A. At a summer program offered at a local college: no
B. At a summer program offered at a college away from home: Yes (3wks at Smith–2 of writing/poetry and one of college admissions prep)
C. Traveling - mission trip, etc.: Yes-- a week-long mission trip to Seattle with church youth group
D. Summer school (local or online at home): no, unless you count the Smith program
E. Working: no-- logistically impossible
F. Hanging out with friends: very little time
G. Other (please specify): traveling back and forth to Portland 2X to meet with jaw surgeon for her upcoming procedure, now scheduled for Sept. 1. That will put her out of commission for at least two weeks, so I really hope she’s getting stuff done at that admissions workshop she’s at now.

@srk2017 you wrote "DS does beta testing for various tech companies from home ie they send us the products (like NEST thermostats, photo scanner, air freshener linked to NEST) etc… and they give him gift cards and also they let him keep some products (he got 2 NEXT thermostats each is worth $200+). Can he show them as work experience on college apps and also writing it as a unique skill? He doesn’t have any other paid work experience. He is also teaching chemistry to some students but again no pay. "

May I ask how your son got involved in that work - it is exactly what my son would love to do “officially” - he certainly does it as a hobby but rather costly for us. thanks!

Poll: Did your '17 child spend the summer

B. At a summer program offered at a college away from home - not this year but last 3 years he did
C. Traveling - mission trip, etc.-- will hopefully take a little vacation; soon going to Def Con in Las Vegas, College tours etc.
D. Summer school (local or online at home) see answer tp A
E. Working - has an unpaid internship to do IT work - not sure he’ll have the actual time to do it though
F. Hanging out with friends - a bit - some movies, dinner, online hangouts
G. Other (please specify): wisdom teeth removal scheduled; doing science research project, AP summer home work, some prep for USACO, building his server lab etc.; college apps, essays etc.

@ca1543 - few years back he wanted new Microsoft Office upgrade and I declined and he found out about beta testing option and he used my name to sign up (with my permission) :-). He says there is a website to sign up for testing and for some they ask for DOB and he uses my name and DOB and others he uses his own name (if age is not asked). If you are interested I can find out and PM you the website.

@MichiganGeorgia, will UA accept CLEP credit for Latin? And if he took a year of Spanish or French in college, the Latin would definitely help with that.

+1 for Gaucho Parrilla Argentina. Also it is in the strip district so you get to see a different part of town. If you are downtown we like Meat and Potatoes and The Butcher and the Rye

@2muchquan I know at my son’s high school sometimes he can’t get the AP class that he wants so I looked up in my state for online for AP classes. There was a program for people that didn’t have AP classes at there school or home schoolers and you could take two classes through this program a year. So if you have more kids it is something to look into. The school never told us about it but when I looked on line I found it. It had no cost to it either. It was called AP for all. Maybe in your state there is something like this. It was put out by the board of education so kids could get a better feel for what college was like and so they were on a more equal playing field with other kids. I am not sure if your child had a study hall if they did then they’d be able to add this class If your state offers it.

@2muchquan Possibly you could drop a class and add that one If there was a program in your state

@picklesarenice I hope the jaw surgery goes well. Doesn’t sound like a lot of fun. I’ve got a fairly good guess what that might be as D12 came close to needing jaw surgery at this age but skilled doctors/dentists & luck keep her from needing it.

Just got a reminder email about NSHSS! Deadline is Saturday! :-B

@itsgettingreal17 I hope you weren’t offended by my comment about South Bend/ND. Remember, I’m a UofM grad…it’s in my blood. Plus, if you’ve ever been to SB…eeesh! I’ve been many times. Campus-proper is gorgeous, however.

Speaking of driving, since it’s just me and D17 on our trip to tOSU and Pitt, she will do a lot of driving. A lot to her is, like, 45mins before she gets ‘bored’. She actually gets ‘bored’, which kind of scared me/pissed me off. I need a longer break than that, but I also don’t want to end up in a ditch b/c the kid is ‘bored’. What have we done to our kids…their attention spans are so short (or maybe just my kid).

I don’t think there is a CLEP exam for Latin…didn’t see it when I was looking for Chinese CLEP.

Thanks @fun1234 I will check into that as an option! I spoke to my D this morning on our way into work, and she was afraid it’s too late to change things up. She’s such a rule-follower. I’ve got her in the car for a while…we’ll brainstorm.
