@flatKansas APHuG is a heavy reading yearlong course. I’d think your S would be lost jumping in second semester, especially as it’s a much shorter semester, given the AP test in early May and reviewing for weeks beforehand.
@2muchquan if you are going to start wearing pants in the winter at least consider going where there are mountains to enjoy the winter.
My son visited Minnesota and really like it. They offered a lot of merit aid. He loves the cold so that wasn’t an issue.
We visited “the U” (U of MN-TC). I swooned. D not so much. But I really love the Twin Cities.
D13 does not have a car on campus at UIUC, but makes good use of the bus system plus the occasional Uber or Zipcar.
Another fan of U Mn TC. And a huge fan of the Twin Cities. But I always visit in the simmer.
DS '14 was offered an OOS tuition waiver and a bit more. I believe they reward NMF, but not automatically. DS '14 was only commended.
Although colder, many more sunny winter days than Chicago (or Pittsburgh…)
@RightCoaster My knees have said ‘no’ to skiing, but I could get into hiking. But, I guess that doesn’t matter since D17 is the one who would be going. Snow is not her favorite thing, but a good friend of hers goes there (one of those stories…she only applied to Cornell, and didn’t get in. Scrambled and ended up at UMinn) and really enjoys it, although her first year she was less than challenged. I think as a sophomore she is really enjoying it.
@Dolemite D loved loved loved Luke’s Lobster:

I think we’ve confused MY dream school with another LAC for D (who doesn’t care about the beach at all).
I love Eckerd, and my dream is to teach art there. That’s my awesome beach school for me :).
Still looking for D for another LAC. It looks like Bucknell is too rural. I’m now a little freaked about U Richmond not being walkable enough. We have UMDCP, Northeastern, Drexel and UA for the “big university” choice, so I don’t need any more of those. It’s really hard for me to find an LAC with 5-10k kids, walkable to a good city/urbanish, good computer science, and top of the stats. I keep digging. Villanova was on there for a while but I think the catholic part knocked it off. And I think it was too big. It’s hard.
I have never heard of this being done before. Both girls took APHUG their freshman year, and it was a one school year class. I don’t know how well he’d do on the final or on the AP exam dropping into the middle of it. Any reason he can’t take it first semester, too?
Car on campus-no. We have one car for the girls to share and it stays here when D17 goes to college so D18 can use it to get to school (we’re out of district). When D18 goes to college we’re massively downsizing everything, and will probably sell both their car and my car, and maybe get something new and cute (and used) for me. H’s car is a diesel and will live forever.
QOTD: Anyone else planning to downsize after their D/S goes off to college? I’ve already given my real estate agent a heads up that our house is going on the market right around graduation.
UR is definitely not walkable but is an incredible university. It is basically in a neighborhood and although there are ways to get off the campus (zipcars, UR shuttles, etc.), walking off campus is not practical. My son is looking at it but he would have a car there.
QOTD: downsize?
Oh yes. We’re looking at all sorts of cockamamie ideas. Including living full time on a boat. We looked at RV’ing all over the US for a few years, but the reality of the RV was way less fun so that’s not an option anymore. I, personally, think we’ll end up with a small house/condo and a medium sized boat, and just go escape every now and then, but I’m open to other ideas from H. I love my house, but I’m ready for the next adventure!
@MotherOfDragons Is Charleston a possibility?
We live in Minneapolis! The U really surprised me how nice it is, we’ve looked at the Mpls and St Paul campus. My D17 hates it but I hope she receives a fee waiver because she is applying. It’s not as cold as you may think, and is often rated a top place to live.
Regarding car on campus: NO! I do ask what students do for fun on the weekends to get a sense of the school culture. My D seems to like more rural schools and I’m hoping most fun will be found on campus, or trust she will have friends with cars. Regarding getting to the airport to fly home should that be where she ends up, I’d rather pay for a taxi, bus or shuttle than buy a car.
Downsize: Yes, plans in the works, but it would be after D20 graduates. Upper lower Michigan in the spring/summber/fall and somewhere warm in the winter. Either the Carolinas or more likely Arizona ( :-q ) since SIL lives there, although I could totally live in the mountains in AZ. No Scottsdale, please!
QOTD: downsizing
Eh… Moving but not really downsizing. We hope to move more towards NC or SC as we ease into retirement. We don’t live in a huge house now and I would love to keep the space in order to have family come stay with us for extended periods.
re: APHUG
@itsgettingreal17 thanks for the feedback. thats what I was afraid of
@MotherOfDragons he can’t take the first half of APHUG because he’s in APGov. We may have to investigate dropping all the APGov for the regular version just to see if he can get a normal schedule.
Or we’ll end up having to take 2 CC classes (one for tech, one for soc) just to meet graduation requirements. This is so silly :\
@Mom2aphysicsgeek College of Charleston’s Sat range is CR 530-610, D’s is 760, and M is 520-610 and D is 720-I think she’s too far outside the range. It looks super nice, though. Charleston is one of my favorite cities, and we have family on Kiawah. Maybe for younger D…
Lafayette is only 2500 undergrad.
U Scranton-it’s Catholic, and D is not interested in Catholic/Jesuit colleges. That knocked out BC and Villanova.
American U has a great location, but I’ve heard terrible things about merit aid going poof after the first year. D also does not want a “social justice warrior” type campus, and AU is very politically active.
I’m starting to burn out on the idea of another LAC for her-maybe what I’m looking for for her does not exist. And that’s ok, because we have a lot of good options so far, I think.
@flatKansas D17 ended up taking regular Gov instead of AP Gov this year first semester because the AP Gov interfered with her IB Bio class. So she’s doing regular gov and regular econ this year. Other than the class rank bump the ap class would have given her, she is indifferent to doing the AP one vs the regular Gov because she’s not going into either econ or gov, but does care a lot about IB Bio.
@4beardolls - At least for some colleges when you do the calculator online one of the first questions they ask is are you planning on applying for financial aid. If you say no the automatic merit scholarships don’t show up. I had this just happen recently with one of the schools I was looking at for DS. I can’t remember which one though since decided it was too expensive even with the merit aid…
@MotherOfDragons Dartmouth?
@MotherOfDragons What about the Honors College at U of Charleston?
The email inbox is smoking…welcome to senior year… :ar!
