@STEM2017 I’ve seen that too. We should have started before now, but with not being able to get transcripts it wouldn’t have mattered anyway. :\
@STEM2017 My D is the same. I won’t have to say anything to her about school once school starts. Summers though…I have to nag. :))
@fun1234 re: NAVIANCE … maybe your issue is the same as ours:
S17’s ACT & SAT test scores from June 2016 aren’t listed in his Naviance account. I e-mailed the GC who replied (a week later) that she doesn’t have the ability to update scores; they’re automatically updated thru the Admin Bldg & it takes a while for the info to be inputted.
BTW … this is his “old” GC because he gets a “new” GC in Sept (3rd in 4 years) – lucky him/us!
@fun1234 Our numbers are in Naviance. But they put in the new SAT incorrectly, so it’s useless DS is a one & done kid, so he only has one plot point. His 1520 looks pathetic when it’s been entered into the old SAT catagory as out of 2400, instead of an very good score out of 1600. His GPA is a year old as well. I’m expecting that it will be fixed, but not for another 4 weeks or so. I’ll give the school a few weeks after the craziness of the start of a new school year. (We start in 2 1/2 weeks.)
Check with your school counseling office. Honestly I find I don’t need it. I know DS’s #'s & his SAT (concordance to old SAT #) and can find a plot point myself.
Nothing exists even his grades
@fun1234 The rules of applying EA while applying to one school ED vary from school to school. If you cannot get a clear answer on the website, try contacting the school in question.
like gpa
I saw peoples gpa that got in but maybe they don’t report gpa
@stem2017 The reason is once accepted you can apply for housing and that is first come first server. If you apply to the honors program and get accepted you must live in the honors dorm. My daughter submitted her app on Monday night still waiting to get the id for the Applicant Information System. Need to get counselor to upload recommendations, school profile, and transcript. Interesting Texas already sent her the ID for the my status system.
I’m not pushing S17 on completing his essays but I wouldn’t hesitate to if I had to. I know he is on it and I even got to read one essay. I loved it! He submitted it for a fly-in app and was re-working to re-use for another app.
The essay / supplement prompts are all printed in a binder. He’ll be completing the essays based on what he feels inspired to write about. His goal is to have several essays completed by the time school starts in 2 weeks and have all apps completed by Oct 1. He came up with the Oct 1 schedule based on the first EA deadline he has is Oct 15 and he said he didn’t want to deal with the stress of multiple deadlines. Since he shared his plan with me and it was well ahead of due dates for most of the college apps, I have been letting him do his thing. I do from time to time offer the suggestion of “that would be interesting to write about if you could fit that into one of your essays” and am met with a “shhh!” and a smile.
For those of you that have mentioned NMSF factoring in to worst case/ best case scenarios yesterday, the NM thread has a post that the letters are being sent to schools/ home schooled families on 8/23.
@paveyourpath Good luck to everyone waiting! Can’t wait for the wait to be finally over. D’s 219(TX) gives me heartburn as she’ll either make it or miss it by 1 point. So much easier to swallow if she misses it by more than a point. lol
@itsgettingreal17 … I’ll be watching that thread even though we no longer have skin in the game and rooting you on!!
It would be so painful to miss it by one point!!!
Fingers crossed for your daughter @itsgettingreal17!! Good luck!
Good luck to all the kids on the edge!
OH I know DS will miss NM. He makes the commended cut, but there’s no way he’ll make the CA cutoff. It’s not like he’d make finalist with his grades so it’s not like he’d be in line for a scholarship. So it’s not a huge deal. Mostly I had just always figured it was possibly in the cards fro him and things didn’t go quite right that day. Oh well…
@flatKansas I cannot find the quoted text about TAMU.
Could you post the link to the page it says that? If you could recreate the magic 8-ball answer.
Thank you in advance
SUMMER WORK: My daughter is like a couple of others here…during the school year is very productive without any prompting from me. But summers are just lazy for her. Maybe she needs that long rest to do what she does the rest of the year. School starts on Tuesday. I am happy she is finally thinking about the college apps - but I am pretty sure there is no actual work done. But I am backing off completely now and trusting in her (while completely freaking out on the inside!)
RHODES COLLEGE VISIT was today. Wow! I mean really Wow! I was super impressed. School is not in session yet, so the campus was pretty quiet but it was a formal scheduled long visit day. They had a short introduction, and then a small panel of faculties talk, with a short Q&A. Then part 1 of the tour. Our guide was perfect for my kid. Very soft-spoken and laid back. A club ice hockey player (she only dates hockey players…what a coincidence) and active in Greek life. Self admitted sort of mess in high school. He was interesting, smart, and funny without trying to be interesting, smart, and funny The campus is immaculate and the building are all stone, stained glass, marble, and hard wood and beautiful.
After Part 1 of the tour we meet back in a small room and they did a Q&A with the student guides. One of the best things I have seen a tour. Honest and informative. You really got a feel for the students and the school. After that they finished the 2nd half of the tour. This was very smart on their part because it was very HOT in Memphis today and the break in the middle in the air conditioning was much appreciated.
Then there was a short Q&A with an AO about the actual admissions and scholarships process. Most of which I already knew from here but it was nice to have it said again. I think they did a really good job a describing the type of student they want there and what parts of the application help them “find” those kids. Again very honest, casual, and informative.
Finally the entire group, visitors, student guides, faculty, and AOs at lunch together the dining hall. Very casual and a nice end to a great day.
In the end this was the most “interactive” tour we have been on. They did a great job letting the visitors direct the direction of the conversations and such. But they also managed to really give us a good idea of what they value most in their teachers, education, and students.
There was a big emphasis on community service and the city of Memphis (which i expected from reading about the school) however, they surprised me by how much they related the curriculum to the service to life in the real world. They made it very clear, again and again, that they are helping these kids discover what they love and how they can translate that into gainful employment that also benefits society. There are some super neat programs going on at that school tied into the corporations in Memphis. And the said over and over they expect their kids to be gainfully employed or admitted in to grad school at the end of 4 yrs (no matter how undecided they are when they come in) Kids there don’t need a 5th year and they had data to back it up.
I was completely sold on the school when we walked out and think it would be a prefect fit for my shy and slightly insecure kid who doesn’t know what she wants to pursue yet.
She admitted liked a lot of what she saw and is beginning to come around on a smaller school - but is still unsure that she will make/find friends at a school with only 2000 kids … (social life in HS has been somewhat of a struggle for her and she somehow thinks the ability to disappear into a big school would be better…)
tl;dr - I Loved Rhodes! (although unfortunately the affordability part is questionable for us, however the way they talked about meeting need and the unique Fellowship program they offer gave me hope they may help us find was to swing it)
