I’ve never used this (too old tech) but a few coworkers had these.
You write with this pen, livescribe, on a special notebook and everything is recorded/digitized.
Good for keeping track of RoIs, Record of Inventions, etc.

I never did anything patent-worthy. ;))

@Mom2aphysicsgeek @payn4ward My H uses a livescribe pen when meeting with clients, especially those who are easily confused. He likes being able to link his notes with the audio. Compliance approved the use after a bit of back-and-forth.

(He’s a Certified Financial Planner.)

Thanks for the link and info. I am not much of a gadget person, but I think this is such a great concept!

Re UMD app – it is open but - we tried to select Fall 2017 as admit date and it is NOT an option - as far as I can tell. Anyone else try??

@curiositycat333 and @mamaedefamilia Yeah, after talking with D a bit more, she’s decided to go ahead and sign up for the October Math 2 (she took Chem SAT2 in June, along with US History) just in case she changes her mind again and the final list will probably lean towards schools that offer engineering but are strong in other physical sciences as well. It’s just exhausting to have to contemplate all the permutations!

Everything about the AP program manages to irk me these days, lol. My D got the AP Scholar with Honor too, but I’m not sure if it counts for much. I just hate how much pressure kids are under to stack up as many as possible (at $90 a pop!) as early as possible.

It feels more and more like a scam. At our local HS, there aren’t enough kids to offer both Honors and AP versions of a lot of upper level subjects, so it’s either regular track or AP or for things like physics, it’s AP or nothing, which means a lot of kids wind up taking AP classes who are just not going to do well on the exam, but they’re pressured into dropping the $90 anyway only to wind up with a 1 or a 2 that will do them no good anywhere.

D17 got the Harvey Mudd deck of cards today. Since we are a family who is ridiculously into card games, we had fun riffling through the deck.

Our collective opinion? Too big to play with! Even bigger than tarot cards. We all really like HMC; but Cali’s just too far, even with the fact that Walt Disney’s Disneyland is close by. (we’re big Disney fans).

Oh-figured out what was the issue with UA-the essay is reading as incomplete because she hasn’t given the GC the list of schools to send her transcript to. Yep, super over-thinking everything.

@RightCoaster my D16 is an NMS and she got a full ride, the total COA that is being paid for by the state of Florida, not the school. The state offers this to keep the bright kids from leaving the state.

Meanwhile, D16 is leaving for school tomorrow. We just packed up the car tonight. My heart is totally breaking and I don’t know how I’m going to get through tomorrow, saying goodbye, not having her around me all the time. :((

And to make things worse, D17 started her first day of school today. Stop growing up!

Good luck greeny 8, she’ll do great. Awesome accomplishment, full ride!

@greeny8 …awww, hang in there!!!

This time next year we can all say we know how you feel.

But for now we are all probably covering our eyes, plugging our ears and trying to pretend it won’t happen.

@CA1543 UMD isn’t quite as open as they said. lol D received an email today that the application was open. Fall 2017 is not an option yet, however. Maybe tomorrow.

But Michigan State app is actually open.

@itsgettingreal17 — Re: UMD app not really being open. What is it the kids say? Epic fail.

That’s kind of embarrassing after sending out all those emails.

Good luck with the sendoff @Greeny8.

Have you read the article published by the Boston Globe each year? Will make you cry…

Update… U of FL application went live today

@Atyraulove Oh S got that fancy little packet from Miami too. And the giant viewbook from UCLA (straight into recycling). And a big booklet from ASU (keeping that one). Wont someone please think of the planet.

And so it begins. Day 5 of senior yr and DD is complaining about too many responsibilities and not enough time. A large part of the problem is she still needs 50 hrs of service that must be completed within the district (so the hrs she volunteers at the local hospital ever week don’t count) I’m tempted to tell her just to drop it since it is for the state A+ college scholarship which she likely won’t use. (But her safeties are state schools so I don’t want to tell her that) However this is something that she has had since freshman year to complete! So I am trying real hard to hold back the “I told you so”

I think tonight is going to be a long night for DS to read Crime and Punishment and finish summer packet. =))
First day of school tomorrow.

@payn4ward D never did finish reading 1984 over the summer. She has to write an in class essay on it tomorrow and is hoping she will be able to write a passable essay for the prompt even though she only read half the book. She is regretting reading Brave New World first…which the teacher has yet to discuss. We are off to a great start

@stlarenas Ew- Brave New World. I had to read that for AP Lang senior year. I never truly understood it and my teacher didn’t explain it. Oh we did assignments with it, he just didn’t bother to go through the plot or the characters

@readingclaygirl I feel like that is the case with all required summer reading. It seems the teachers give the kids some sort of quiz or assignment to prove they read it and then move on by day 2. Like its some sort of box that needs to be checked off and the teachers don’t like it enough to devote time in class for it. Seeing as these both were science fiction I’m guessing the teacher is not a fan of the genre and used the summer to get it out of the way. It’s only my assumption though…I may be wrong.

I think a number of the yield protection schools are also demonstrated interest schools. I don’t think UVA is a yield protector but they look very specifically at things like leadership and community service perhaps as much or more than scores. All of those who got into “better” schools yet rejected from UVA in our area had less leadership and/or community service than their stats might suggest. I would imagine they are looking for certain things in the essays as well. UVA has to take a large percentage of in state students and has no merit money to offer them so they can’t even help themselves minimally in terms of yield of top in state applicants.
