@Mom2aphysicsgeek this is me too! I am totally panicking that I have talked my D into applying to all of these selective schools - where 6 months ago she would have been completely (ignorantly) content applying to one state school and being done. And what if my list is a total stretch and she gets rejected from them all after doing all that extra work and ends up at Mizzou (which is not even on the list) anyway.
@stlarenas My dd’s list is 90% sure thing admissions. It isn’t as if I am at all worried about her being accepted! None are exactly what she is looking for, but all of them are doable. I am not sure where the panic is coming from. It isn’t helpful though, bc I have been researching schools for a year. It isn’t as if her list is just slapped together with little forethought!
So my son’s school visit went well today. The coach we met with said he’d love to have my son on the team and actually started a recruiting file for him while we were there. My son has to get his new transcript over and a list of academic classes for senior year, ACT results, and the coach said he would take it from there.
He likes my son for his grades and demeanor more than his lax, lol. He showed us a wall of plaques that his school had won for being the top team in his league for overall GPA. They missed getting the award recently, so my son is essentially a ringer, hilarious.
So my son was happy. He actually liked the school more than he thought, and said he would fit in there well. So we might have a new number one on the list. Because it’s Div Ii there might be some scholarship $ for him, and he does qualify for some merit there. I like that.
BTW, my son showed up with a ** RESUME** and copy of his 9-11 transcript and the coach loved it. He said that my son showed up well prepared.
I looked at the Connecticut Trinity but it came off the list for some reason. The Texas Trinity would never make the list by virtue (vice?) of it being in Texas. I’m not paying for airfare to the Irish one, lol.
I also have anxiety moments over not having the right mix of schools, but that has lessened to now be replaced with the “how will we pay for all of this” anxiety. I also have “will she be accepted” anxiety, even though she’s a strong match for all but 2.
I do think I’m going to pull UCF off of D17’s list, because it more and more seems like a wonderful match for D18 (the theme park management degree looks like somebody poked around inside D18’s head and said, I’ll design a degree for you!). That leaves 9 for D17, and I think that is plenty.
The panic may be coming from the desire to make sure we’ve covered all possible bases and not overlooked anything. I hate that. Paralysis of Analysis.
@MotherOfDragons – I liked for the paralysis of analysis comment. Am sure many of us here share the same feeling. Trying to second guess the AdComs…safety/match/reach? Yield management/Tufts Syndrome?
List still evolving…
@Mom2aphysicsgeek I have done the same thing! There are just days when I’m convinced our list is not good enough and we are missing some school out there we should be considering. Drives me crazy! Thankfully I never voice these fears to ds or he would kill me!! LOL
@Mom2aphysicsgeek – same here regarding the list – too many reaches then trying to prioritize last visits and apps for EAs - then – OMG - what are we forgetting, where else should we look that’s decent and he could get in etc… Why did one drop off etc. Messy process. At least we are all in it together – in spirit anyway!
This is me!!! ^^^^^^^^^^^
And I am second guessing S’s list because he has focused down to only 3 schools, two of which he will absolutely get into the honors colleges because of his stats plus we expect he will make NMF and get full tuition. I don’t know why I worry because S is the kind of kid that will be fine wherever he ends up. It just seems too easy for him…and for us!
@Mom2aphysicsgeek @CA1543 @Collegecue Misery loves company right??!
But really no one I know in real life has ever thought this much about college for their kids. They all pick one (maybe 2) schools nearby, apply, and go. I feel so neurotic. If they saw my spreadsheet they might have me committed =))
D’17 is moving very slowly on her AP CS summer homework. DH is trying very hard to offer his wisdom, no luck. So DH started redirecting all the energy to S’20 who still listens to daddy :)) . Result is that D’17 is still practicing println in java, while D’20 has started coding tictac game in Python… Good news is D’17 informed me that she only have 1 short piece essay left to finish for Umich and then she is done. And she got called to interview for her job application :)>- .
I personally will feel much more settled once the NMSF cutoffs are known. The list will be slightly adjusted if she does make it (looking at you, Arizona schools). We’d also be booking airfare that day to Oklahoma and back to Ole Miss lol
If not, life will go on and she won’t have to take the SAT nor will she have to write additional essays :))
@Mom2aphysicsgeek A friend assures me that Trinity is now offering some full tuition and full ride scholarships. She said her friend’s son interviewed for them last spring but was not selected. They are not listed on the website, however, so if interested, call and ask.
Like most of you, I constantly go over and over D’s list wondering if I missed any schools and second guess myself and others about D’s chances at her favorite Big MAC’s. We are shooting for a competitive full ride. And I would love for her to have at least two choices after all decisions are in.
Well, as much as I hate to be in the worry party with you good people, lol, I am at least relieved to know I’m not the only one in list evolution mode. 8-}
I really wish schools would offer a financial aid pre-read to kids of small business owners the way they do for recruited athletes because everyone keeps telling me NPCs are not very reliable for small business types. Ugh. It makes everything extra anxiety producing if you don’t even feel confident of the numbers you’re seeing.
@thermom that must be frustrating^^^^^^^^^^^^.
Figuring out the financial aspect of schools causes a lot of distress on this site. On top of worrying about just getting in, you also struggle with coming up with the cash. Argh!
Add me to panic mode evaluating the quality of the list. When pressed, off the top of his head, S could name only 3 the schools he knows he will apply to and 2 are fall back positions geographically. He isn’t sure where he stands on the rest (10) and still wants to search for the elusive mid Atlantic/east coast urban school that has about 5,000 students, has a traditional campus look and feel if possible, that we can afford, he can get into but isn’t at the upper 75th percentile. Because at his stats, those aren’t schools I want.
We are reviewing the list again tomorrow but UGH!!!
School starts on Monday here. The required pre-senior-year meeting with the guidance counselor was last week, and my daughter was told that along with her one expected AP course (calculus) and dual-enrollment course (English), two of her other courses might be taught as AP courses (Spanish and world history). She just got word, though, that history will not be an AP course, which my daughter says is a relief, because the teacher is known for having really hard and huge but fun and interesting project-based assignments that would probably have to be scaled back to fit AP curriculum requirements.
And, speaking of Spanish and world history, today’s JOTD: [Who wears red and knows if you’ve been naughty or nice?](- YouTube)
D finally got the custom your-name-in-our-font postcard from UChicago. Interesting how these things are staggered.
Forgot to mention it—my daughter got her Chicago-font-name postcard yesterday. We’d just figured it was later than everyone else’s because postcards aren’t exactly high-priority items between here and the lower 48.
