Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@texaspg - was it the Michigan Stamps program that had former TASPers or were the former TASPers given Stamps scholarships at other schools? To the best of my knowledge, there is no formal application for Stamps - recipients are selected from among all applicants, correct?

@picklesarenice, good wishes and speedy to your D on her surgery.
FWIW, one of the 2016ers from S’s school chose Agnes Scott. I don’t know much about it, but I think it became her first choice because of the aid/scholarships they offered.

I have gone down the rabbit hole of trying to figure out the GE requirements for each of UCSD’s SIX colleges to determine which fits best for DD’s goals and major and which she can AP out of. Holy cow. Data overload.

Oooh @VickiSoCal – you are braver than I. ^:)^ I looked at it a couple times and decided I was afraid to go there.

In case you need another variable, some people consider location, since the campus and housing are fairly spread out.

This chart is somewhat helpful, but I think I’m going to need my own spreadsheet. Of course, the more time I spend on this, the more likely she is rejected from UCSD and all research was wasted.

First day of school up here!

My wife and I walked in with our senior, since there were a lot of forms to fill out for a major trip she’s part of this and next week. (The first two weeks of the year at her school are minimester-type classes, some of which involve off-site travel.) She goes to a K–12 school, so it was kind of amusing walking amongst all the parents with tiny elementary-school kids in the lobby…

Today is D’s first day at school!

Re: AP score credit - I’ve looked at this for D’s top choices. All I did was print off the AP charts and highlight ones she’s taken/will take and then calculate her credits. Wasn’t too time-consuming.

Thanks for the U-Mich Stamps info. I’m going to check into it further.

U-Mich not a good fit for D’s interests, so not worth the Hail Mary for us.

@itsgettingreal17 at UC San Diego there are 6 colleges. Any major can attend any college. All 6 have different GE requirements and different AP credits that apply to them. When you apply you rank the schools 1 to 6. I don’t’ want her to rank a college number 1 and then find out she has a ton more grad requirements at that college. Currently based only on GE requirements she has:

1 Revelle College
4 John Muir College
2 Thurgood Marshall College
3 Earl Warren College
6 Eleanor Roosevelt College
5 Sixth College

For a chem major Revelle is closest to the physical sciences building. Muir is next closest but takes hardly any AP credits, then Marshall.

@VickiSoCal So, if that’s for a chem major, we might just copy your list for a physics major.

I’m assuming most physical science kids go for Revelle as their number one. But I wonder how many get it?

So now I am beginning to understand why no one goes to UCSD from our high school. We send 10-12 a year to UCLA, UCB, And UCSB… We maybe send one or two at most to UCSD. I thought it was because it’s motto was “where fun goes to Die”, but I guess the real reason is you are dead just trying to figure out the 6 college system. It is a great school. I know it works really well for those who go. Too intimidating for my family. None of my three will have applied…just saying…

Welcome @cleoforshort you’re not alone. My D has 3 schools she knows she wants to apply to but that’s it. She doesn’t want to research where else to apply. He finally started her essay but it needs to be shortened by 150 words.

@picklesarenice good luck with the surgery.

Everyone whose kids started today or recently, welcome to senior year! D17 started last Monday. It’s nice to be out of lazy summer mode and back on a schedule.

@readingclaygirl I mean this in the nicest way, but aren’t you starting college now and why do you want to hang around a parents thread…go enjoy yourself. I almost can’t wait to be finished with this process! I have a D16 who just left and I follow the parent 2016 thread and you are the nicest sweetest girl. Good luck in school!

@VickiSoCal Is that true at any other UC?

That’s an interesting question for our tour of UCSC. Back in the day the GE requirements were all the same for all the colleges at UCSC, but maybe it’s changed their to be like it is at UCSD. IDK, we are going on a tour in October. Like UCSD the colleges are clustered supposedly in terms of interest & major, but it reality there is not requirement and student pick the school they feel is the best fit. Honestly, it meant very little if you were an upperclassman who lived off campus.

@curiositycat333 ucsc has only one set of ge requirements.

In another thread, someone pointed out this http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/exam-credit/ap-credits/index.html which lists which UC campuses allow APs to be used for GE requirements and which don’t. For example, Davis only allows AP English to go towards your GE requirements.

@VickiSoCal Why does California like to make everything so complicated? :))

@greeny8 As a lurker, I value the comments and advice of everyone who participates in this thread, including those from readingclaygirl. I know she can certainly speak for herself, but I assume that she contibutes to this thread because she enjoys being helpful and has the time right now. Not everyone has left for college already, in fact, most that I know still have another week to go. I’m glad that she’s still here posting.

We call it a lottery school. Like getting in is so unlikely it’d be like winning the lottery.

First day back at college for me today. I feel like my brain has been sucked dry, but it’s so awesome. I have to buy 50 lbs of clay! (I don’t know why I pay a $$$ materials fee-we still have to buy all of our stuff)

I got a really amazing advanced painting teacher. Like hit the jackpot. The first thing she said was “if you have black, purple, or burnt umber paint in your box, throw it out.” Yes!!! (I really like mixing my own colors)

@VickiSoCal Revelle is generally considered the most difficult because of the 6 unit Humanities course they have to take. First 2 quarters of their Humanities sequence are 6 units each and the last 3 quarters are the normal 4 units. The hub of the campus has changed since there were just 4 colleges. Back then Revelle was much more central and Warren was out in the sticks - now it’s kind of the other way around. Warren used to have a ridiculously easy writing requirement back in the day - 2 quarters taken P/NP.
