Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@payn4ward Your school description is almost exactly like ours, just twice as large. I am still waiting for them to post their class of 2016 profile, but here are the relevant stats from class of 2015:

62 students in 2015
100% college acceptance
Attending 44 different colleges, of which 34 are in the USNWR Top 100
$4,654,000 is renewable scholarship offers
7 National Merit Finalists
6 National Merit Commended

I like all of your detailed information regarding applications/acceptances. AFAIK, our school does not post that info, but maybe I’ll ask the CC. For those of us anxiously awaiting NMSF confirmation, the wait should be over soon.

Well our school claims that 95% or more student attend university. But that data is flawed and based on information given by the students in May. I’ve known quite a few students to do one semester at CC and then drop, or change their mind & take a ‘gap’ year that turns into more. There is a huge push to say your going to university even though not all students actually graduate in 4 or even 6 years.

@itsgettingreal17 the snapshot method wont work at our school because the GC only uploads data over the summer time. So the 2017 grads will have their school app decisions put on the scattergram charts in the summer. Too late to help us on Nov 1.
Some of the schools in our Naviance data have way too many dots/squares to analyze thoroughly. The Boston/New England schools have tons of data points. Less so as you move away from the region.
I’m just using Naviance to get a rough feel for schools. I can see where my son has a chance, and some where he has no chance. He is only applying to schools that his ACT and GPA score is competitive.

98% of students at our HS go on to 4 year college. Pretty competitive student body.

S’s school has Naviance, but they removed the graph function as one of the view this year. So no comparing that way :frowning: EDITED - the graphs are back! They must have been updating over the summer.
S’s school has an ~99% graduation rate. Almost every year one kid takes a gap year, either because they aren’t mentally ready for college (may be too young) or because they perhaps didn’t get into their dream college and want to apply again the following year.

@mtrosemom No one takes a gap year for another reason?

My chipmunk is home from his wisdom teeth extraction - has several medication to take & hours of biting on gauze and 2 days of icing (I forgot how are we suppose to the ice packs around his head,) 2 were rather big & one was really hard to get out - impacted at tricky angle. But it is over. Yeah!!! On to milkshakes (without a straw) and chilling out for a few days. thanks for all the tips from everyone!

@CA1543 I remembered one of the advise is to use a bra :)). Congrats and fast recovery!!!

Hope your kid feels better soon CA1543.

@CA1543 … Glad it went well! It was honestly a nice few days on the couch for both of us with me springing up intermittently to get mashed potatoes and gravy, milkshakes and jello. It peaceful and restful and a nice break from the pressures of the year.

Glad it went well, @CA1543 !

@CA1543 Hope he recovers well soon!
I don’t remember doing any of these remedies when I had one out during graduate school. I guess I just toughed it out. :stuck_out_tongue:
I was going to drive home myself afterward but a friend came with me as it was recommended or may be required.

Drive yourself home? I had to walk. In the snow. Both ways uphill.

Regarding school support for application essays, S17’s school mandates every student come the first day of Sr. Year with a CA essay draft. No essay…no school. The college counseling team holds a dinner after school for Srs on the first day of school as well, where they review aspects of “the final push”, etiquette for dealing with schools as well as their classmates during the process. They also review the details of marrying Naviance to the CA, finishing LOR stuff, and how to interface with college reps visiting the school. They held a “boot camp” for essay writing in late summer for any student inclined to participate…mine declined. No essays as part of any courses, nor turned in for a grade. The college counselors are readily available for essay feedback; their comments have been spot on for S17. Fingers crossed that this will all be over in a hundred days or so, so SR year can be fun again (like in “the good ole days”!)

Many, many students at our school only apply to UC’s and CSU’s, so no Common App essay, so requiring it would be very odd.

@VickiSoCal Util this year you could usually overlap the UC Prompt with one of the CA prompts.

This Insight 4 questions is brand new. I just realized the new UC Prompt/Essays will in fact be longer than a single common app essay. They area asking for four short essays - less than 300 words. At least they are a lot less vague and I can come up with fairly straightforward answers, so perhaps it will be easier for him. (Or perhaps not.)

Today a postcard from NUHE Tour came.

We got previously Cost to Cost college tour postcard
https://www.coasttocoasttour.org/ and another one (name escapes my mind) with some selective schools and
CTCL tour postcards but this NUHE was new to me.

Like your typo @payn4ward “cost to cost”

:))

@WhereIsMyKindle - It is definitely a college prep school. Some kids do a gap year abroad, but almost all have a gap year plan, except for one girl last year who, as my son said, is taking a gap life. She will be the second to not go straight to college. The other got a Thiel fellowship (there is always one kid that all look up to).

Regarding school support for college essays: D17 school offered a two day seminar on college essay writing, which she attended. I don’t think there is anything integrated with the English courses around essay writing during the school year. I wouldn’t be opposed to it, because that might make them happen in a more timely fashion. She did come home from the first day of school very stressed - I suggested she channel the stress into ACTION!

I realized this week in our Naviance that there is a “school stats” tab which outlines the specific number of applications, RD vs ED and acceptance rates, waitlist stats and average GPA and ACT scores. I think for us this information is only updated in the summer once all the applications and acceptances are complete, nothing on a rolling basis. Much easier to get a read on the college stats than the scattergrams.

Today’s mail brought a beautiful look book from Vanderbilt. Based on my Ds stats, the history of acceptances to the school from our high school, it’s very clear that she is not a candidate so I do wish they would save their money and resources on sending to us such an expensive piece! Recently my D asked for help going through her 1000s of emails to unsubscribe from the many many MANY schools she has no intention of looking into further. I guess since email is free, the schools feel that it’s okay to send almost daily emails, but I find it a real turn off.

@WhereIsMyKindle Woops, Yup, the Cost is what I was thinking :))
