Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

Blah. The school says they haven’t gotten the NM letter yet. (I didn’t have a good argument prepped for THAT excuse.)

Objectively I know S’s score should be fine, but irrationally I need someone to confirm that number already.

According to the thread link above, add my kiddo to the NMSF list. Congrats to all. =D>

@curiositycat333 my area does not make any deal out of NM. There are 7 public schools in my county, and the year S15 was named a NM Scholar, none of the schools that year had a NMSF.

@curiositycat333 yes, for the last 5 years there has been 1 finalist and 4-10 commended per year. The score in MA is very high to get selected I think. I am not an expert on this matter at all, but if I remember I think MA has the highest or one of the highest scores needed right? 223 maybe? So, it’s hugely unlikely in our school, and this is a school that sends 98% of kids to a 4 year college upon graduation. So people just go " whoah, genius" when somebody makes it, but otherwise no big deal and no talk about it because who are you going to talk to about it, ha.

Seriously, I didn’t even know how excited people got about NM awards until I posted in this thread and found you folks.

Joining in to say it looks like DD made it with a 222 in California. Her school has not had a NMSF in 7 years so I will be crossing my fingers that they know what to do. They haven’t told her yet and never did tell her about commended in the spring. Congratulations to those who made it and good luck to those still waiting to find out.

@CT1417 Thank you, I guess we will just have to sit tight! Off to hockey practice!

D also made the cutoff for NM based on the link above! Her school hasn’t said anything, but they usually have around 25 semi-finalists, so I’m sure they know what they’re doing.

Congratulations to all the kids who made it! For all those still waiting or on the bubble, hope you get some good news soon.

Well, I think we are striking a school off dd’s list. She was really interested in Ohio University’s Honors Tutorial College, especially their French and Econ programs. She had been in contact with the Russian dept and their professor was willing to create 1-on- 1 classes for her.

I showed my dh this link http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/1915426-freedom-of-speech-a-sign-of-trouble-ahead-or-both-p1.html (warning: these kids and their messages are crass) and the man who has been completely hands-off and silent over the entire process (with just about every single school with every single kid) has now become involved and has said there has got to be better options.

So, now I am on the search for another program to replace it. I agree with him about the decision, but it is not an easy one to replace. HTC sounds like a perfect match for how she has spent her entire life being educated.

looks like my child is a NMSF too. Here’s hoping it results in some merit $! Congrats to everyone especially those seeking the big merit schollies!! Celebrate! And good luck to those still waiting!

Wow, so many NMSFs!! Congratulations @crazym0m @BusyNapping @fidoprincess @nw2this @flatKansas (probably) !! <:-P <:-P <:-P

Just curious, what schools are those with NMSF looking at for merit? Ours wants to stay in state, so the only one we know about is the 1/2 tuition at USC, but that’s still too expensive.

@youcee There aren’t too many NMF scholarship choices in CA. Other than 1/2 tuition at USC, there’s full tuition plus benefits at CalState Long Beach. http://web.csulb.edu/depts/enrollment/financial_aid/scholarships.html

The yolasite list has a couple small Christian colleges in CA, also.

Seems like mostly southern states are big on NMF scholarships.

@youcee check out the yola website:

I wonder – how much does NMSF help for admissions and at which colleges mostly? Just wonder since colleges want to hype their stats yet the cutoffs for NMSCs vary a lot state to state.

I’m aware of the yola site, just curious how others planned to use the designation. Our son will likely end up at one of the UCs. That’s pretty much the level we’re looking at with a reach or two thrown in. ASU is the closest school with full tuition for.NMF, but it’s not really that much cheaper than a CSU which would work out better for us. But haven’t thrown that idea totally out the window yet as a safety.

@youcee NMSF may be helpful toward qualifying for UC Regents. I don’t think there’s a formula for Regents, but seems like they might look at that among other things.

Is USC(southern Cal) in a sketchy area? My girlfriend keeps telling me it has high crime rate around the campus.

Btw, did you see this?

http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/the-princeton-review-releases-25th-annual-college-rankings-300319348.html

@youcee S will likely end up at a guaranteed money NMF school (UA, OU, maybe TAMU). He claims he doesn’t want to stay in-state, so his only real option to go OOS is NMF.

edit to say: UA would be affordable even without NMF, but extra extra affordable with it.

@SincererLove Parts of the area surrounding the USC campus are sketchy. (Parts are nice, like the museums in Exposition Park.) The campus is doing big $$$ things to expand its area of non-sketchyness and to provide more on-campus and non-sketchy housing.

I guess this is College Ranking season. There’s another thread that says the US News rankings come out Sept. 13.
