Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@MomStudent2017 Interesting! She has more schools in the common app then she will probably end up applying to. But she is working through them all a little at a time. I think seeing the types of questions they ask on the CA might help her narrow them down. (such as what activities they list for you to pick as interests - what majors and minors they list, etc)

And maybe this will also be a benefit because if they reach out to her it may 1) boost her confidence and jump start the processes and 2) help us to determine which schools are really interested in her.

@dolemite - https://dornsife.usc.edu/honors unless you are speaking of South Carolina which does have an honors college.

Don’t confuse school mail with actual interest in an individual student. The 2 have very little intersection.

@Mom2aphysicsgeek Even if it is an request to meet for an interview? I would think that would show interest from the school in the student

Was the request made prior to an application being submitted?

(Even after applications are submitted, students are invited to interview for many schools and it has no bearing on admissions.)

She started the CA for the school, but did not hit submit yet (her essay isn’t ready) but within an hour of starting to answer questions specific to the school in the CA she got an email requesting an interview with her from the school.

I’m not putting a whole lot of weight in it. But I do find it interesting.

^^Creepy! Make sure she has a sticker over her webcam (only slightly kidding).

Have any of you (my trusted friends on this thread) used someone from CC to critique an essay and had a really positive experience? There are many Posters that are willing to read essays but unfortunately I treat most of them with suspicion. If one of you have used a specific poster and found them very useful I would love a reference. Feel free to PM me.

My son’s ACT English tutor has been helping with his essay but it seems like a dead end to me. “It needs more passion,” and “You need to improve the ending,” and “It’s starting to take shape” are not helpful comments. He needs specifics, real granular specifics. Thanks!

The colleges seem to know when you select their college. From what I have seen, only MIT has a policy to require the student to make the effort to seek the interview with the assigned alum while most others have varying policies as to when the interview must take place.

@texaspg Yes, that is what I was trying to convey. It is a step in the application process, not a sign of being recruited.

Ah, looks like they confirmed 219 for a GA cutoff so she did miss it by 1 point. I’ll probably wait to tell her until I can get a few more data points of confirmation (like from her GC, if we can ever get in touch with them). It means she won’t have to wait until Sept. 14 to send off her apps, though.

@MotherOfDragons …oh man, these kids missing it by one.single.point. are just UGH! So close! So sorry. I know she will have plenty of options but still.

Lurking around some more from Parents 2016. Just a little word of encouragement . My son was not a NMF. He actually scored much better on the ACT and he was offered some very generous merit at all of the schools that he applied to, equal to or more than our NMF friend. NMF scholarships range widely in amounts. Most require that you list their school first when you took the SAT to be eligible. There are many other opportunities out there that are equal to or more than NMF, you just need to look. Good luck to everyone .

Well, the good news is dd won’t have to take the SAT this fall!

:))

Actually, you don’t have to list your NMF choice until some time in April. You can put undecided as a choice and then change it when you decide on a school. D15 did that and got a little extra NMF money stacked on her other scholarship. But there definitely are many excellent merit opportunities for those with high test scores on both the ACT and SAT even if they did not achieve the magic PSAT number.

@mtrosemom Some schools require that the school be listed first on the SAT in order to qualify for their scholarships . Each school is different.

@WhereIsMyKindle - I had same reaction ie no need to take SAT  enough money is paid to collegeboard already.

Give me strength, or at least give me bail money. This should have come as no surprise to me. H and I congratted S on NMSF.

He doesn’t believe it, because the information comes through me. (In retrospect, I should have had H tell him)

S says there’s a rumor (at least thirdhand through multiple students) that the school has a very low number of NMSF this year. S believes he knows approximately that many kids with scores he believes are higher than his. So S believes he’s not NMSF and is generally bummed and resigned.

Of course all I can say is “its all over the internet” (and I KNOW how that sounds). So now I’m stuck BACK to waiting for the school to finally let the kids officially know, because my kid always assumes his mom is wrong in the face of any possible conflicting opinion.

I’ve been on the 2017 board for so long that I feel like I know your kids. I’m celebrating the kids who made NMSF and am sad when I see the ones who missed it. At least, most of you know one way or the other. It sometimes seems like the not knowing can be the hardest part.

I’m an idiot. I’ve been doubling her math score and thinking she had a shot at commended. Ooops. She does not.
