Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@NerdMom88 hang in there! Sounds like D2 has a lot to process. I have noticed ds has enjoyed when preparing for SAT IIs - is online review as opposed to in a book… If you search for a particular SAT II subject on the prepscholar site they will list various resources that can be helpful

@itsgettingreal17 - Our info about departmental scholarships is just what we were told, by representatives from both the business college and economics department. I believe that departmental scholarships are mostly for current students, not incoming freshman. I found this link, but since the apps are closed for now, we can’t see any of the details.
http://www.ou.edu/scholarships/ou/CollegeDepartmentalScholarships.html

@Collegecue The common app instructions for this is probably applicable:
If a course taken grants both high school and college credit, the course should be listed in the Current Year Courses section since it satisfies a high school requirement. However, if a course taken is through a college that is independent of the high school (i.e. no high school credit is received), then the course should be listed in the Colleges & Universities section.

1000 pages. Holy.Cow.

Total topic change here:

On our recent road trip to UA, we listened to the audiobook “Hillbilly Elegy” by J.D. Vance. I had started the book during my morning walks but wrapped it up on the road trip. It is a very timely book for us for a variety of reasons–the main one being he has two whole chapters on his high school career and then college search.

This Yale law graduate will truly take you into the living room of what it was like being raised in a traditional Appalachia family and the struggles he endured and how his grandparents anchored him and helped him move forward. He gives voice to his grandma “Mamaw” and she is quite literally laugh out loud funny. Along the way, he gives a very detailed social analysis of poverty, resilience and a whole host of other issues. He is honest, objective and gives such detailed reflections on his life.

My own kid even listened up in between being lulled to sleep by his voice and the road. She is quite interested in social issues, overcoming poverty and how some kids make it out and some do not. We both agreed that everyone needs a Mamaw!

Welcome back @NerdMom88 - So sorry about D17’s health challenges…sending hugs.

Sharing info

According to S17 his friends despise talking about the whole thing, it’s only adults that do that. LOL! Generally speaking all the kids I know are applying all over the board and not a lot of overlap. Even if there was though I personally have a very hard time justifying not sharing, assuming that it is ok with the kid. If it really were true that x college would only take x number of kids from any certain school and that was a proven, known, data point then maybe I’d feel differently. But I can’t say that is what I’ve seen. I’d like to believe (naive as it may be) that colleges will take the most qualified kids that fit their needs. It isn’t my place to judge whether my child’s friend has a better chance or not or that is who my child is competing against at all given the thousands of apps any college sees. I do freely share what I know, when asked. Honestly the most common conversation/sharing topic isn’t around a specific school or where my child is applying it id educating people (when asked lol) on the difference between merit aid and FA.

@paveyourpath on the subject of @Collegecue’s question, I wonder where we should put a summer course. It’s an activity/summer enrichment but it is also a 1 credit college class. Would it go in both spots?

@eandesmom Based on the Common App instructions, I would put it under colleges & universities because you mention that 1 college credit was earned. The instruction on common app reads as follows:

What is the difference between college credit course and enrichment programs?
College credit courses are graded, provide credits that transfer to most colleges, and are shown on your transcripts.

Enrichment classes provide skills that are used for academic achievement, personal growth, or college preparation. A Certificate of Completion is earned at the end of the program.

I was gone couple of days and we are at the 1,000th page! <:-P

No progress on Apps in Slackerville. [-(

Big Hugs to @NerdMom88

and more Hugs to those who missed the NM cutoffs by one or two points. =((

Hope everyone is having a relaxing long weekend ! I-)

@NerdMom88 …-- so sorry to hear about your daughter’s condition and all you and she are going through.

DS is still trying to get that common app essay done!! And a few supps and summer homework - school starts Tuesday aaaahhhh!

D finally has a draft of her CommonApp essay! <:-P

She is spending the long weekend finalizing her college list before she starts sending out apps. Glad to finally see some progress!

@NerdMom88 So sorry to hear about your daughter’s condition. hugs

Another reason for students to get their end of the app in as early as possible: For common app schools, teachers can’t submit recs until the school has submitted their materials. And they won’t submit until the student has applied. LSo we wait. Her teachers were able to submit LOR’s through Naviance for non-common app schools, however, and those were the ones that show initial materials as submitted. It’s all making sense now. I hope the school gets its part submitted soon. I need to work on the brag sheet for the counselor rec (for the few schools that want one). I’ll get that done tomorrow.

@NerdMom88, welcome back. I am sorry that your D has such a tough road ahead, but at least you now know what you’re up against.

CA essay being reviewed by counselor. He has done most of the CA and added schools. When he added schools, some of them popped up with supplemental essays. He is starting those this weekend. Progress is being made.

@NerdMom88 I’m sorry to hear about your daughter’s diagnosis. I’m not sure if this will help but a friend of mine was heavily involved in the Chron’s and Colitis Foundation of America (Ccfa.org). It was so helpful in finding local doctors in the area and support groups.

@NerdMom88 I am so sorry. I know a few folks with it and it’s a tough thing. Hugs to all of you.

@itsgettingreal17 thank you for that update!!! That changed the entire timeline I was going to review with S on Tuesday. I had no idea that was how it worked. Ugh!!

That is very helpful info. Thank you @itsgettingreal17. I thought they would upload them and they would just transmit when the student submitted the app but it does make sense that the school would wait.

@NerdMom88 sorry about your daughters crohns diagnosis. My friends daughter has been dealing with it for years, my heart goes out to you.

@snoozn happy anniversary :stuck_out_tongue:

If you haven’t read the mom’s hippie school list on the college search and selection forum, you might want to check it out. The author is fun to read and the posts are very informative. For me, the posts have affirmed what I was pretty sure I already knew…any school she likes is an absolute no way for my dd. The schools she has reviewed are schools I was pretty sure would be horrible fits, but her posts absolutely confim my suspicions.

@carachel2, my H got that book from his parents for his birthday and I’ve been intending to read it. I’ve heard a number of interviews with the author and it sounds really fascinating. I grew up in Tennessee but with “Yankee” roots, so I’ll be interested to see how my kinda/sorta outsider’s perspective on Appalachia compares with the author.

@Mom2aphysicsgeek, I haven’t seen the mom’s hippie school list but now I’m intrigued. My oldest D’s top two schools were Hampshire and Sarah Lawrence. Maybe I’ll find her whole list in that thread, but probably nothing for D17 or S18!
